We recently heard the devastating news that Matildawormwood's beautiful baby son, Daniel, was born sleeping.
Matilda's thread is here. Our thoughts are with Daniel and Matilda?s family.

We have offered to make a blanket and Matilda is very touched that people would do this for their family. We hope that the blanket may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters and crocheters. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.
At the moment there is quite a lot of wool still in circulation because of the current blanket projects. Where possible, we hope to 'recycle' as much as we possibly can.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool.

One ball should make at least 2 x 6' squares.
If you are a crocheter and/or an experienced knitter needing donor wool, could you let us know when you PM us as we can send part balls from the 'recycled' wool stash. Thanks.

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

We are also introducing two new yarns:

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
It's another 'silky' wool that fits in nicely alongside the DB and Rowan wools and can be combined with both.

*Artesano Superwash Merino DK.
Although it isn't as silky as our normal wools, it is soft yet hardy and washes in the same way. It has the added appeal of being a good ethical option and is very reasonably priced.

The Colours:

Blues, greens and cream.

Ideas for squares:

The initials D and N

Motifs: Stars, trees, birds, hearts, snowdrops, sailing boats.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support. Thanks Thanks Thanks

Pidj - it may be that I should be in bed by now but I can't find your boat pattern. Confused

Night all!

PurplePidjin · 16/06/2012 22:11

Oops, sorry it's on Team Hooker and Support Thread 2! I'll attempt to c+p tomorrow (also in bed) :)

tribpot · 16/06/2012 22:30

Pidj's boat

Whenisitmysleepytime · 17/06/2012 06:52

Thanks trib! :)
Might have a look later if my poor sleep deprived brain ever wakes up Hmm

I have one complete Bear Square for Daniel, one complete bear for a square for his sister and I've frogged the sun and sky of my seascape and redone them.

Todays chore: clean the kitchen finish the second bear square and decide what to do for the next :)

Cwoolf, frogging is when you have to undo loads of work - rip it rip it

Tinking is undoing a little bit so you knit backwards (tink)

It's Fathers' Day and for many this day will be a difficult one.

Thinking of all the families for whom the blankets are made.

Thinking of our many crafters and donors for whom this day will also be very hard.

Sending much love to you all and the strength to get you through this day and beyond.

Absolutely Knotty, thinking of everyone for whom this will be a difficult day x

PippiL · 17/06/2012 09:18

I've frogged and tinked my square already!

Managed to complete the square with a new stitch, and am really pleased with the effect (diagonal bee stitch)

Knitting my second square with extra love on fathers' day.

PurplePidjin · 17/06/2012 09:37

Dp will be sharing my Dad today, his own having passed away 15 years ago. I feel very flattered that he feels that way :)

Diagonal bee stitch sounds fab, Pippi, any chance of a piccy?

No probs, Cwoolf, I'm not sure you'd find out from google even, tbh!

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 17/06/2012 11:35

Meh, father's day is a real non event here. Mine isn't around and my grandad who helped raise me, died on father's day. Dp is on nights so still asleep so nothing special family related there either.
It must be so hard for people though I know.
OTOH kids are at the table making cards and we are just having a lazy day :) so nice day

TimeForCake · 17/06/2012 17:09

The Rowan 'spruce' is a gorgeous green, I'm really really liking it - first time I've used green. It seems to be great at making my simple square look a bit less wobbly which can't be bad. Maybe I am also improving a bit...finally!
I'm even tempted to dig out the link from Pidj on one of the other threads and attempt a granny! Will make sure my plain square is finished first though, in case when it all goes wrong!

PurplePidjin · 17/06/2012 17:17

Cakey, go for it. They look far more complicated than they really are :o

LookAtHerGo · 17/06/2012 21:03

I have an idea, I'm thinking of making 4 small squares then crocheting them together to make the 6" and having a little star in the middle of them. I'm not sure exactly how it will work, but is it ok to try? If it doesn't work I'll be able to use the wool for a granny, so the wool won't be wasted, just my time taken up.

LookAtHerGo · 17/06/2012 21:05

I've finished my first square, it's like this in the middle, but I've had to a couple of extra rounds on it to make it 6"

PurplePidjin · 17/06/2012 21:09

Lookather, that sounds marvellous Thanks

LookAtHerGo · 17/06/2012 21:24

Cool. I shall crack on with it now :)

LookAtHerGo · 17/06/2012 21:47

One teeny tiny square crocheted. 7stiches across! And 8 rows including the foundation chain row. Looks tiny.

PurplePidjin · 17/06/2012 21:50

Aw, that'd be about 2x2" at my tension?!

LookAtHerGo · 17/06/2012 22:15

I've made a HUGE Maths error. Let's just say my teeny squares are just under 1 1/2" that would be fine if I was putting 4 in a row! I was planning on making it as a 2x2 so really the squares should have been just under 3"! Oops.

Well I will make a decision in the morning whether I'm going to do it as a 4x4 square and use the ones I've made to make the stars, or make the square out of 16 teeny tiny squares!

[dumb blonde emoticon]

KnottyLocks · 17/06/2012 22:20

LookAtHerGo, I've just finished a square that is 4 small squares hooked together. I did it in the round, so 4 small granny squares. Was easier to gauge the size that way. Might be an idea for you if the maths gets in the way Smile
