I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

Well just to add a Midlander's perspective on this conversation about our geography, a friend of mine was once informed at a college in London (when announcing she was from Derby) "I've been to Edinburgh". As if Derby is perhaps a suburb of Edinburgh.

Ringwood isn't too near Scotland

Neither's Derby, Pistey! But I think anything outside London (probably even to the south of it) is essentially the Outer Darkness. Or the Outer Hebrides as they are also known.

I have made most of a heart square! And I have only mysteriously lost one stitch so far (and reinserted it by knitting into front and back, which is my new cure-all for mysterious disappearing stitches). And I think I swapped my ssks and k2togs a couple of times, but it looks fine anyway. It's vair pretty, if I do say so myself.

I wondered if these little flowers might embellish a plain or textured square nicely - I made one for a knitted hairband I did the other day (I have the attention span of a gnat and enjoy knitting great lengths of icord while watching Homeland you see) and it was quite easy. It has five petals rather than the four in the picture - you just keep going.

Heh, actually just realised that's the same website I got my mini Xmas stocking pattern from - never noticed it was the same one, they must have their Google rankings off pat!

Glaikit (love your name BTW) - we could have another doomed to failure attempt to organise a Scottish Meet-up. I am sure that StayingDavidTennantsGirl would be up for a crafting meet-up and I am sure there would be others.

Baby, feel free to add some flowers to a simple square. Smile

We have an Aga shop too and will soon have a Waitrose. I have often wondered how the Aga shop survives as I have never seen anyone actually go in there, but I guess they don't have to sell too many Agas per week.

Glaikit East Hants where I am is about 30 miles SE of London. I can make a Scottish meet-up if you wait till August when I will be visiting

Tribpot - you have reminded me of the time years ago when I first went to visit a new boyfriend's parents, in Tamworth. The mum made me a cup of tea and asked if I'd ever been Up North before. As my family are from Yorkshire I don't regard Tamworth as being in any way North. I remember just sitting there with my mouth opening and shutting like a goldfish. Needless to say that relationship didn't work out.

Anyway, back to the matter in hand. I too was wondering about making some crochet applique flowers, and either attaching them to my own squares or sending them to be attached wherever suited the finished blanket.

mummyinspain, those daisy earings are super cute. wish i could crochet, but fairly basic knitting is about all i can do. i told the girls in my office who knit about these projects, and they've said they'd like to have a bash, so have ordered a few more balls and should have a load to send. Do we have submission dates yet?

Pistey/ Knotty/ Pidj/ Anyone Wot Knows - are there any pictures around of the flowery garland we did? I shamefully cannot remember who it was for Blush but I never saw the finished article.

That abstract cat crochet linked to upthread is marvellous! Grin

No hurry Knotty! I assumed I'd missed them as I've not been around here very much.

The FB page is really doing its job, btw. I probably wouldn't have come across the new blanket threads without it.

Thanks

That is really good about the Facebook page Umami - that's exactly what we hoped, it is very easy to miss threads, but easy to post something on FB knowing it will appear in everyone's newsfeed.

Super speedy donors we have - lots of lovely woolly wool has arrived with crafty crafters. Go, go go!!!

Well, I've just got back from my local wool shop and the lady says she has given up on both Debbie Bliss and Rowan because they have no reps covering our area and supply is so erratic. She also told me that the two shops in the nearest bigger town are in the same boat. So it's mail order only for me. Are Cucmberpatch the one most people are using?
