I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

Piste I'm please I make someone laugh, I spen most of my time banging my head and going DUH! Brain finger interaction is not good, and I am too used to DP chaecking everything I type as my spelling is terrible! but MN is MINE all MINE. hence the typo's terrible spelling and general mistakes in all my posts. I am consistent in my failour (sp)!

mummyinspain · 09/05/2012 18:03

Resrosie, I think anything would be gratefully recieved, it really is a case of the thought that counts. If you want to do soemthing easy but a bit more dynamic, why not stripes (two wools, just change on over for the other) which are simpler to do if you do them horizontally but can be turned round if wanted verticle.

Or something like a round "sun" in the middle and then just sew a couple of simple birds on to the front (ie black thread in the shape of an M)

Or just a plain square.

5madthings · 09/05/2012 18:06

oh yes i have 4mm written on my note for town but put size 4 on here, going slightly mad...

prettygirl it looks very cool, my ds2 would love it! i shall be having another look later to get a better idea how you did it!

ok so metal needles and yes charity shop is a great idea, there are loads in town and as i am going in without small people i shall be able to browse Shock i may even be really sad and get one of those counter things for keeping track of how many rows you have done Blush i am getting sadly excited about having a new hobby Grin

Trib/Knotty(or any other Knitting Gurus). Do you reckon that the cable cast on is better for squares? I learned how to do it recently but not sure I totally know when to do it.

landofsoapandglory · 09/05/2012 19:12

I'm waiting for my wool to arrive.

I have this book which I have used for a lot of the blankets in the past. But I am not very adventerous and tend to stick to squares of one colour because I don't want to make a mess of them and thus spoil the blanket!

I am going to have a go at the humming bird one, and look through my book and see what I can adapt. Maybe I will have ago at a flower or something.

I shall have to spend some time using scraps of wool experimenting when we don't need a blanket I think.

tribpot · 09/05/2012 19:24

Barbara - I think for the squares, as the edges are going to be covered by superb crochet, you can do whatever cast-on floats your boat.

That said, I love the cable cast-on, I think it's very hard to do wrong and my top knitting guru who is alive (because obviously Her Zimmerness is everyone's top knitting guru of all time) advocates the cable cast-on for everything.

JParkson that pattern is 12" with a 5.5mm hook. With a 4mm hook and dk weight wool plus skip the last couple of rows it should come up at 6". Let me know if you want to have a bash in crap acrylic at the weekend :)

Anybody wanting a blanketty stitch and bitch, let me know. The last couple were Reading and Oxford which are a bloody long way for me (minimum of 4 hours each way), but I'm happy to do Winchester/Southampton/Portsmouth/Dorchester all of which are relatively easy from here Thanks

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2012 19:33

I'd like to be considered a knitting guru.....

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2012 19:34

Babs, cast on however you like, my lovely Smile

As Trib says, we don't stitch the blankets together, we hook them: so all edges will be covered by a double crochet seam.

tribpot · 09/05/2012 19:46

landofsoap - my elephant squares for the last blanket were my first attempt at two-colour knitting (that wasn't stripes). It did take a bit of doing but we can definitely help you if you want to have a bash at it. Or you could start with something a bit different from horizontal stripes this one actually is (so it claims) just two rows of colour A followed by two of colour B and so on. Or this one with vertical stripes.

Btw crocheteers, I came across this heart pattern on Rav just now. Love. It. This is a very simple but pretty heart design for knitters and another crochet.

I can make a meet-up in the same general area Purple - I tried last time but couldn't make the date. Actually, not Dorchester, that is too far (I'm East Hants).

PurplePidjin · 09/05/2012 19:57

WhoKnows, so am I! So far east I can see the border if I strain my eyes and squint Grin

Sod it, let's do one in Ringwood Wink

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2012 20:00

My Grandma used to live in Ringwood

landofsoapandglory · 09/05/2012 20:00

Thanks trib. I need to take the plunge IYSWIM. I've just had a flick through my book and there is quite an easy flower that I think I could do. It's on a chart, rather than a pattern, which I have a bit of trouble seeing so I reckon if I sat at the table when the kids are at school and wrote it out I might be able to have a stab at it.

I've just ordered this book to give me some more ideas.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/05/2012 20:04

Confused Ringwood is West? Southampton is about my limit distance wise on week days anyway (I'm between Guildford and Winchester).

tribpot · 09/05/2012 20:06

Yes, that book is great, land - lots of fab ideas.

PurplePidjin · 09/05/2012 20:06

Ringwood is luvverly. It has Waitrose and an Aga shop, where I met Mary Berry last Christmas Grin

PurplePidjin · 09/05/2012 20:07

And Pidjie yet again demonstrates her remarkable ignorance if such metaphysical concepts as Right and Left Blush

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2012 20:08

My Grandma had an aga too.

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2012 20:20

My Grandma didn't have an aga or live on Ringwood

tribpot · 09/05/2012 20:21

Nor mine - Knotty! They must be the same grandma Wink

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2012 20:23

My Grandma wasn't Mary Berry though

KnottyLocks · 09/05/2012 20:29

Nor mine, Pistey! How spooky Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 09/05/2012 20:48

Any thought about a meet up in Scotland? As much as I would love to go to Ringwood, I don't think I could even point out East Hants on a map Blush is it near London?

PurplePidjin · 09/05/2012 20:53

Glaikit, all I know about scotland is its above Newcastle.

I live about 90 miles down from London, in the middle of the South coast. Will do meetups within a two hour radius :)
