Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

Tidying is over-rated Grin

Molehillmountain · 21/05/2012 16:01

So-the molehole is now somewhere between pristine and the burgled look Smile. Knitting tonight - too many distractions til then.

LackaDAISYcal · 21/05/2012 16:43

wow, that square is fab tribpot :)

I've done a couple of two colour crochet squares and a plain knit that will get a crochet bird motif. I wish I had more colours though...

tribpot · 21/05/2012 17:28

Trouble is, DAISY, you just end up thinking 'ooh I could do this one, this one and this one' because you have so many different colours to play with. I wonder if in future blankets (and very sadly, there will always be future blankets) it'd be more efficient for MNers local to each other to try and share in a bigger pot of wool to save everyone buying 50g of everything they want to knit in. Don't know - sounds a bit complicated! But that said, I've probably only got time to do one more so I'm happy to send on some of what I have left ...

Trib , this time we are asking people to send any leftovers only if they have had donor wool. We have recycled a fair bit of leftover wool from previous projects and will hopefully do that again. Most of that has gone to crocheters to work their magic on multi- coloured squares. We can always do the same for adventurous knitters though, if we have big enough amounts in our leftovers stash.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/05/2012 17:44

Sharing resources is a such a good idea, but do be aware of postal costs, I have been absolutely horrified at how much it costs now, seems about a £1 more to send one ball of wool than it was before the prices went up. To send one ball first class is £2.70, I think, second class is only 50p less, then there is any envelope you may need to get on top. I am a bit Shock at how much crafters will be paying to send squares in. Maybe what I need to do is get a Dave the Donkey and come round collecting them Grin Confused

Wish we could get some woolly company to donate to us, lovely Whatevertheweather tried Cucumberpatch recently, they know of us and what we do, but wouldn't give anything because they feel that they can't donate to every special cause. Bless her for trying though.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/05/2012 17:46

Here I come with Dave, collecting squares

LackaDAISYcal · 21/05/2012 17:47

tribpot, I have just realised you must be quite local to me by your Headingley comment!

GlaikitFizzog · 21/05/2012 17:50

could we try some of the chain craft shops for donations? hobbycraft john Lewis? are JK a mumsnet partner?

GlaikitFizzog · 21/05/2012 17:50

JL not jk obvs

tribpot · 21/05/2012 17:51

Ah DAISY maybe we can do a bit of local yarn sharing even without Dave to carry it for us :) I work in the middle of Leeds and live just off the A660 in what we like to pretend is Adel but is on the wrong side of said A660 in reality!

And on the postage costs, Pistey, I wonder if local MNers should think about clubbing together to send one big envelope instead of lots of small ones?

I have more than enough to keep me busy really....I just loved the darker blue in your fancy square!

Does anyone have crochet bird motifs? the one I have is too teeny tiny, and I have no idea how to increase it Confused

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/05/2012 17:55

Do you not need me and Dave? Sad

I recycled wool from a previous project to Glaikit, and she took it to the hairdressers Grin

I absolutely agree trib, if that is possible, it could be a good idea.

prettybird · 21/05/2012 17:56

It should encourage us to stop before we've used up all the wool - that way, we've got small amounts to use as feature colours in future squares having been tempted to buy more beautiful wool Wink

I used a small amount of left over pink and white wool in my bird. I'll knit more squares until the last posting date and then keep what's left until the next Sad time.

LackaDAISYcal · 21/05/2012 17:57

I'm further round the ring road towards Moortown :)

oh and I'm almost late for work! Hate working evenings as it compromises on my knitting time, but I took DS2 to soft play today and managed a whole square whilst he ran wild played nicely :o

PurplePidjin · 21/05/2012 18:01

Pistey, you and Dave are 403 Forbidden Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/05/2012 18:02

sad times pidj, it was glorious

Umami · 21/05/2012 18:03

I think DEBBIE BLISS herself (is there an actual person or is it just a company name? Confused) should be sponsoring the blankets!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/05/2012 18:12

If anyone wants to come round with their squares, I will put the kettle on Brew

Molehillmountain · 21/05/2012 18:22

Just a thought re postage-if squares were flat-pinned to a sheet of paper maybe, could they go large letter rate rather than parcel? Wouldn't work with balls of wool but finished squares it should. Would save a lot I think

Molehillmountain · 21/05/2012 18:26

Can be 353 mm long, 250 mm wide, 25mm thick and weigh up to 750g. They suggest sending magazines that way as a guide.

Molehillmountain · 21/05/2012 18:27

Sorry-bit of a drip feed but up to 100 g that way is 90p first and 69p second.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/05/2012 18:29

Definitely Mole, flat as poss, spare wool too.

The first squares I had came like that with everything flattened, then it was posted as a large letter. Really really definitely something to think about.

KnottyLocks · 21/05/2012 18:32

Resist the natural urge to wrap leftover wool Into balls. Would be better wrapped around a longer flat bit of card. Or tucked loose into a smaller envelope.

PurplePidjin · 21/05/2012 18:53

I've got west Hants and dorset covered for coffee and cake square delivery meetups.

Any other volunteers?

We could nominate a day in the week before the deadline and have all the meets at the same time...
