Support thread - new blankets

I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our new blankets, very sadly knit for MNers who have both lost a beloved baby recently :(

You will have instructions from Pistey about wool colours and some suggested shops to buy from - personally I buy mine from McA Direct and have found their service excellent, but there are lots of alternatives out there. Warning: Hobbycraft do not generally stock the required yarns.

The question of how many stitches to cast on comes down to the question of gauge; how tight or loose your knitting is with the yarn in question. Best way is to knit a sample (or a plain square); just measuring how wide it is once you've cast on won't be a very reliable measure because it stretches out once you start knitting. Equally, if it's already more than 6" wide you're on a hiding to nothing. For most people, on 4mm needles, 33-ish stitches and about 45-ish rows should give you a 6" x 6" square but don't do a whole one if you're not sure or a slow knitter, as it's mega-frustrating to have to pull it all back down again.

What follows is mostly links to patterns that we've done or revised in earlier blankets, or ideas for things you might want to try. I know there are some specific pattern requests for these two blankets and I'm looking those out. Warning: many of these are links to patterns on Ravelry, which is like the Facebook of knitting. Registering is free and 100% worth it, although it may mean you start sending your salary direct to your yarn shop of choice at the start of each month as you discover more and more amazing things to knit.

If you want to start with something more adventurous than garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette (knit one row, purl the next, and so on) why not try the Chinese waves pattern? (Non-Ravelry link). Or maybe stars - this is a bit more difficult - (Non-Ravelry link).

Birds have been specifically requested so we're starting with this lovely Owl pattern - this involves cables and ends up looking a bit like this.

Note, though - before having a go at these patterns you need to know what your gauge is, so you can modify the pattern (so in the case of the owl, cast on fewer stitches / chop out a few rows in terms of length for example) or change needles to get it close to the 6" size.

If you want to follow our adventures in trying to get a particularly devilish heart pattern right, please see the support thread in which Team Heart did battle with hearts, trees and elephants.

More to follow ...

I'm not allowed caffeine at the moment Sad but I did just make myself a fry up

tribpot · 19/05/2012 09:20

Glaikit, which pattern are you doing? Chinese waves? I think we did decide slip 1 purlwise (i.e. with the yarn in front) looked nicer ...

Now - these should be written instructions for the first cat pattern but I generated them with a Macro and I'm not entirely convinced the design is big enough to work in a single colour as the sheep does. So proceed at your own risk and do a test piece first - I will have a go but I have to go renew my driving licence before Headingley is expected to cater for more than 4 cars simultaneously, at which point it will grind to a halt for most of the rest of the day.

I've had 3 but I have been up for a long time with a cold ridden baby.

Fry up sounds ace..... Drools.

Oh and Mole - based on Minnie's experience I think we can confirm intarsia is too difficult. The method I use is stranding (carrying the 'other colour' behind the main one). It does mean the back is not as nice to look at and does mean you have to remember to catch the unused yarn around the used one every couple of stitches to avoid having long loops of unused yarn flopping about on the back of the work, there is a tutorial mentioned in one of my posts from yesterday but I will look for some more instructions when I get back. It isn't difficult, just fiddly. I would start on a simpler design than the bird for practice, though - a basic fairisle would actually be easier because less counting to do.

Molehillmountain · 19/05/2012 10:47

Thanks trib, I think I'll give the bird a miss for today! Might do a two colour pattern instead. Here are some guaranteed mouse proof biscuits-eat them while they're fresh BiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuit

PurplePidjin · 19/05/2012 10:51

Well done, Glaikit! You're a true knitaholic now :o

Umami that mouse is soooo cute!
Eagerly waiting for my donkey. Will it fit through the letterbox?

tribpot · 19/05/2012 10:57

Umami, love the mouse, that is so sweet!

Driotwich, if the donkey won't fit through the letterbox he'll be handed to you by the postman I'm sure.

Knotty, when I said loose, I meant loose for me, mine appears to be very tight on the square I did. But I'll bear it in mind if I do it same tension I know it's no bother :)

tribpot · 19/05/2012 11:42

Mole - I did a few simple two-colour motifs that have the advantage of not having one colour being used for more than 3 stitches (so no need to worry about carrying the yarn across the back of the work) and example square but let me know what you think.

I have my donkey! Meece will commence today.

Molehillmountain · 19/05/2012 12:47

That looks fab! I have blue and cream so I'll give it a go Smile

tribpot · 19/05/2012 13:53

Nice one Mole. I rather like it if I do say so myself.

I think I've managed to account for which side the unused yarn will be when you do the blocks of main colour between patterns, so it should be on the right side of the work to pick up again when it's time for the next one.

As the pattern is symmetrical, you don't strictly need to read every other row from right to left, it shouldn't actually make any difference. Obv you need to knit all on the right side and purl all the reverse (except the borders). But if you get stuck, I will have the Macro spit out some textual instructions :)

I think my hummingbird is back to front - not a problem, as long as I REMEMBER it's back to front. :S

DontCallMeBaby · 19/05/2012 16:22

Ugh, that went completely wrong - some of the bird stuck out and some stuck in, and it just wasn't shaping up to look like a hummingbird at all.

tribpot · 19/05/2012 16:36

Baby, do you want me to do written instructions?

OP posts:
PurpleKittyKnitting · 19/05/2012 16:45

Right, housework done and going to start the hummingbird!

PurplePidjin · 19/05/2012 16:53

Please may i have heart and bear linked again if someone has them handy? Thanks

tribpot · 19/05/2012 17:03

Pidj, which heart pattern were you looking for? There is the original Team Heart heart, crochet heart, and another and a knitted one. Also hearts big and small.

And finally ... teddy!

PurplePidjin · 19/05/2012 17:33

Thanks Practice run underway!

DontCallMeBaby · 19/05/2012 17:39

Nah, it's okay trib, I'm doing garter stitch now, I'm giving up on birds (sorry) and am going to attach a knitted flower or two. Perhaps someone else's hummingbird could be positioned nearby to sup from the flowers?

I did have a search for a bird to append, but no luck. However a search for tiny knitted birds did yield this www.berroco.com/exclusives/bluebird/bluebird.html

How cute is he?!

100years · 19/05/2012 18:24

Ooh I like the crochet hearts one. Are we after hearts for the blanket?

PurpleKittyKnitting · 19/05/2012 18:50

Had to rip out a bit of the hummingbird but sorted now! I think it may be at about row 18 on the chart, there are 2 consecutive 'right side' indicators on the chart and I think that may be where I went wrong. I am keeping a note of the row number I am on, and right side is an even number row and I am now on row 23 and all is well!

I hope to get mine posted this coming week!

tribpot · 19/05/2012 18:57

Oh no! I can't believe that PurpleKitty - I wonder if that's what threw Baby as well. I will rectify the chart right away.
