There is irony in me starting this second thread for you lovely Blanket Makers, as I'm the least crafty person, but I'm doing it to help Pidj Smile

Righty Ho! I've just had this email from Rebecca:

Hi Knotty,

I have spoken to Justine who has said we can sticky a thread for you about this and give it a mention in the newsletter.
The logistics of a raffle or alike would have to be managed by yourselves but we can certainly help you promote it?
Maybe, as already suggested, a just giving page or ebay?

Sorry we can't be of more help, but anything else that we can do, we will try our best.

Good luck and email me when it is all up and running and we will sticky for you and get a mention in the newsletter (which is due on Thursday, if that is too short notice we could make room next week?)

Ok, we have support! Smile Now need to get our ideas sorted.

That's a great start in terms of publicity!!!

It would be good to have photos of the blanket - but that rather puts the pressure on Pidj - unless it could be a work in progress with regular updates?

And look here They already have a JustGiving page. I expect the other charities do too but haven't looked yet. I have a clearer idea now but have other things on my mind at the mo...

I'm off the dentist Confused. Be back soon.

If you want to do it as a raffle and have people buy 'tickets' via Paypal, there's always the existing Paypal account that was used for donations. I'm happy to manage it and keep track of names so we can pick a winner at random (or get MNHQ to pick, so it's all fair and above board?), if that's of any use. Then the proceeds could be sent to the chosen charity.

Right, there's no huge rush to actually launch whatever we decide and i cant shoot decent pics to save my life so how about i aim to have it done by the first meet (2nd July?) and we'll do a photo shoot?

We can research options between now and then...

MissP, I very much like the idea of a raffle. Thanks for your offer too.

It's the legal side of it that makes it more complicated. We would need a license of some sort...I think, from what I can gather from the info I've read on line. However, it has been done otherwise there wouldn't be a site doing online charity raffles. I would've though we would be able to get one for a 'one off' event.

One of the difficulties with picking a name from paypal donations would be that they would be made using real names rather than MN names. I guess maybe MNHQ could help us out with that bit. That's also the problem with doing via JustGiving. We don't want to 'out' anyone or put people off donating in any way.

Brian is starting to whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Poor Brian.

Photoshoot is a good idea, Pidj. Now, we don't however want you rushing around putting extra pressure on yourself in order to get the blanket done in time.

let me know if I can help with this, I can be quite handy from time to time Hmm

Knotty - would Piste be able to look into the licensing side of things for you?

I do think that its a better idea to make sure things aren't rushed and Pidj has a decent amount of time to put it together and get something properly presented etc.... doesn't stop people highlighting that something like this might be happening though.

I have 2 rows and the border to do on Blondes's blanket. That should keep my busy on Thursday, possibly into Friday. Then I'll be free to work on the charity one 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 30th of June and 1st of July. That's 7 lots of 12 hour shifts in which I need something to do. Eminently do-able Grin

It's what the fecking arse I'm going to do with myself beyond that which is concerning me now Hmm

Gambling Commission rules on lotteries/raffles here

I think, according to that, we are looking at a Simple Society Lottery. Anyone care to have a look through to see if I got that bit right? Even a Small Society Lottery. In which case we'd have to be registered with the Licensing Authority.

This bit here is interesting:
Societies that run small society lotteries under registration with a licensing authority and that sell tickets by means of remote communication (internet, telephone etc) are not required to hold a remote gambling licence issued by the Commission. Remote gambling I think the only way to get a clear picture is to contact them really.

Actually, 'remote gambling' sounds a bit like the viewing in this house when DH has control of the remote control.

oooooooo not quite sure what I did there. Must be Brian's bedtime.

Remote gambling sounds like TV poker to me!

I only need about 8 more squares to make the blanket 4'x4' and I've got plenty of wool for that. If people start sending me squares now, I'll get snowed under again and we'll end up doing this twice Shock

Not that I don't appreciate everyone's incredible generosity, but...

KnottyLocks · 14/06/2011 10:08

Yep, remote gambling covers poker and online betting. Raffles some under 'lotteries' and are considered gambling too. Different league though, isn't it? Suppose the idea is the same: you stake some monet in order to possibly win a prize.

Pidj, would it help at all if we sent you squares that were already joined together in strips? Or if you sent bundles of squares to some of us knitters and knotters, for us to make up into strips and return to you for the final putting-together?

Report
purplepidjin · 14/06/2011 20:44

That's a brilliant idea, but i'm not sure I could jigsaw it together afterward iyswim? It's no hassle to just run a line of crochet up the squares (although it gets a bit hot under there near the end!)

If anyone's close enough to buy me a meet for a wine coffee I'm happy to accept help Wink

Knotty, you is a classy bird innit luv!
