alicewalkersgarden.com/2023/03/theyre-trying-to-burn-the-wrong-witch-the-witch-trials-of-j-k-rowling-redacted-news/

'I consider J.K. Rowling perfectly within her rights as a human being of obvious caring for humanity to express her views about whatever is of concern to her. As she has done.

I also believe that listening to each other before going for the match would put some distance between us and the Middle Ages.

As an Elder (which I take seriously), I must remind us that there is no “right witch” to burn.
Perhaps only our own lack of awareness of being erased, long before robotic
AI “females” were foisted upon society’s consciousness, primarily as slaves, workers, and sex toys.
By this I mean, for instance, that “woman” for whatever sinister reason was being erased in language well before she/her was being disappeared from dictionaries and society.

The use of “guy” for both male and female eroded the ability of children to easily feel confident in which gender they were. From that confusion, considered irrelevant, apparently, to the forming of young minds, has come much cutting off of parts and restructuring of essential physical equipment. If such restructuring is freely chosen at eighteen or twenty, at least there is a sense the person involved may have lived long enough to know, definitely, what is desired.
Younger than that, I feel there may in fact be reason, later on, to mourn and weep. After all, the human body is a miracle, of whatever sex, tampering with a miracle is unlikely to serve us.~aw'

I’d love to see any TRAs try and go for Alice Walker - fucking legend talking utter, utter sense. I’m made up for JKR.

BlessedKali · 09/03/2023 22:20

YES Alice Walker!!!

Although I am not at all surprised that she is being principled and honest....

Well, only this article so far, dreadfully written sneering bollocks that verges on libel. In fact, I would say it is libel.

As a young woman, I devoured Alice Walker's books. The gave me a sense of empathy and solidarity with other women, irrespective of background or race.

'In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens' has got to be the most evocative of titles ever written. Title never fails to remind me of my mother's roses and dahlias. Whatever is going on in the world, mothers are a bulwark against the ugliness.

Nice reminder to dig them out, or get afresh on kindle.

I have to say I could never read any of her other books, but 'In Search Of Our Mother's Gardens' is simply brilliant, amazing work. I have an old battered ex-library copy that I have kept for over twenty years. Every time I have a book clear out, I can never bring myself to part with it. That's despite me having issues with the themes of her other works. It stays.

I do need to reread it again soon. Along with some Tanith Lee!!

I might just do a female author month.

RufustheSpeculatingreindeer · 09/03/2023 23:22

So is alice walker anti Semitic cos she read a book and wrote a poem criticising the jewish religion?

is that it? I may have missed something…

pattihews · 09/03/2023 23:25

I hope this will open the floodgates. Someone of Alice Walker's standing must surely have some effect?

@ArabellaScott The comments are bloody brutal even by MN standards.

Quick someone do a screen grab before they disappear!

I particularly love: We will absolutely NOT cancel Alice Walker!

😂

Codlingmoths · 10/03/2023 01:31

Those comments…. I hope the author reads every one of them

Thank you Arabella for posting this thread and that link of the yahoo article. I was having a bad day but this made me so giddy I feel like a young girl again.

BeggyMitchell · 10/03/2023 03:38

Ooh lovely. And those comments have made my day.

Rightsraptor · 10/03/2023 05:06

I was also thinking 'Alice Walker? Who's she?' .

Then realised 'That Alice Walker! Oh, wow!'

Rightsraptor · 10/03/2023 05:29

@cingolimama - if you're going to make a serious accusation against someone, and I believe calling AW 'anti-semite' is serious, can you at least supply some evidence?

I Googled it and found only the usual oversensitive souls who can't seem to cope with anyone having any imagination.

It's a mystery to me why anyone having a copy of any book is seen as endorsing it. Some of us read stuff knowing we won't agree with it. We find it helps us formulate arguments against it. Whatever the 'it' may be.

Writers read. A lot. They probably read all sorts of bonkers things. Which gets us to David Icke. From what I've read about his book that AW would choose to take with her to the desert island she was abandoned on (BBC Desert Island Discs), it does at least sound like a work of imagination, which would no doubt be helpful in keeping a writer sane in such circumstances. Don't you think?

Or do you really only read writers whose every view you agree with?

EdgeOfACoin · 10/03/2023 06:24

The Yahoo article is absurd - it doesn't even pretend to be impartial. It's such bad journalism.

Also, the allegation that JKR is antisemitic because of the goblins in Harry Potter doesn't stick. If people genuinely thought the HP books were antisemitic, they wouldn't be reading them. The books would be being rewritten as I type, to change the bits where the goblins appeared. That obviously hasn't happened.

It's good to see Alice Walker speaking out. Let's hope there's no rowing back.

BettyFilous · 10/03/2023 06:39

This is cheering news. I read a lot of Alice Walker in my youth so I’m pleased to see she is brave and outspoken on this topic.

The comments under that Yahoo article are interesting. People are not buying it and can express their concerns with unflinching clarity.

Righthandcider · 10/03/2023 06:49

I can't see the comments. I just get a load of ads / click bait articles. Has anyone managed to screen grab?

turbonerd · 10/03/2023 07:07

Hurrah!
Alice Walker is such a legend 🤩🤩
The Abrahmic religions ARE built on what many would consider vile stuff. Read the books, unless you think it will tarnish you.
The Talmud, the Bible and the Quran and many of their supporting texts contain … awful stuff.

Her criticising some of the writings is good, in my opinion. To criticise something is not the equivalent of hating them.

cingolimama · 10/03/2023 07:41

Rightsraptor:

Okay, I'll explain. Alice Walker, in interviews with the New York Times and the BBC fulsomely praised and recommended David Icke's book (i.e. she didn't just "have" or "read" the book). She then doubled down in interviews with the Washington Post and NPR. Icke’s theories are not flights of imagination, they are conspiracy theories, and. anti-Semitism is his worldview: The idea that the world is run by a secret cabal of Jews is a recurring theme, and the idea that these imaginary Jews drink blood and sacrifice Christian babies goes back centuries and has been used to justify persecution of the Jewish people since before the Crusades. He is also a Holocaust denier and wants schools to teach Holocaust denialism as an "alternative". Walker also wrote an anti-semitic poem "it is our Frightful Duty to Study the Talmud", which repeats and endorses blood libel etc. She is completely upfront about her views and I'm bewildered that your Google search revealed nothing more than "oversensitive souls who can't cope". This is widely documented and hardly controversial.

Yes, I read a lot, and read many authors whose views I don't align with, including Alice Walker. But as JKR has (ludicrously) been accused of anti-semitism because of some tenuous idea about the hook-nosed goblins, I wonder if Alice Walker's support would add credence to that view.

There are over 900 comments, and so far, I've not seen a single one that isn't robustly supportive of JKR and Alice Walker, calm, informed and reiterating that biological fact is biological fact. I'm still scrolling down, however.

Will post a few quotes in a bit.

Ive just read a very interesting article about it following cingolimama post

the funny bit i found was at the end where the author said the worst thing is that due to alice walker talking about how good ickes book is that people will seek it out and read it and believe what he writes…

the reason its funny is that cingolimama post is what made me think of reading it…because if people are saying its A B or C in theory i ought to read it to prove what they are saying.

Saying ‘this book is dreadful and you shouldn’t read it’ (and i know thats not what you said cingolimama, but others have about other books) means that people will seek it out

my post has very very little to do with whats being discussed but i just found that bit interesting

determinedtomakethiswork · 10/03/2023 09:09

Well, let's face it, there's no way that Alice Walker thought that man were women anyway. It's taken her a long time to publicly stand with J. K. Rowling and it's such a shame that everyone is so fucking frightened to speak up and state the obvious.

NotHavingIt · 10/03/2023 09:15

If you take a look at the writer of the article you may understand their standpoint - Mey Rude - " fat trans latina lesbian"

Funny as I was never aware Yahoo published opinion style content before. It's really quite hateful, and I even wondered if it was written by AI. Gets them the clicks either way.

I don't how it works but it is a republishing of an article originally from Out magazine which as far as I can tell doesn't allow comments. www.out.com/news/jk-rowling-alice-walker
