From today's Guardian: Why do so many women have depression?

Anyone else feel that the 'epidemic' of depression and anxiety among women is a rational response to the circumstances in which we live?

Men don't go to the doctor much. My ex husband was depressed, tried to kill himself etc, never once presented for that to any medical authorities so I don't necessarily agree that just because more women are diagnosed with depression that means more women have it than men and I don't just base that on personal experience.

What I would like to see in the press is all the loads of very happy full time working mothers with large families but that isnt' an image it suits the media to present, however we are all out there. Believe it or not life is huge fun for lots of women, not a veil of tears.

Sensible article by Sarah Vine

by the way, re the 'what about the men? they get depression too' issue raised earlier in the thread, I think the point is that women have seen a big rise in depression over the last few years where men have not. Now, I quite agree that men go to the doctor less readily etc, but I thought in general they were getting more willing to seek medical help than they used to be. And yet their depression levels don't seem to have risen they way women's have.
