Judge lets ‘bright lad’ who stabbed girl 10 times avoid jail

The young offender – who cannot be named because he is under 18 – had become obsessed with the girl at his school. He began using fake social media accounts to send her messages after she rejected his advances in December last year.

One morning in March, he waited for the girl near the shop and asked her out on a date. When she said no, he followed her, with a knife in his pocket and stabbed her at least 10 times, inflicting cuts to her neck, hands and face.

Footage released by the police shows the boy chasing the girl through the store with the knife in his hand.

...

Transcripts of court hearings in the case, seen by The Telegraph, reveal that Judge Ian Lawrie KC’s principal consideration was the offender’s rehabilitation.

“You’re a bright lad – I’m going to impose a curfew,” the judge said.
“You’re not to contact directly or indirectly by any means, social media or otherwise, [the victim] and her mother, and also keep out of mischief.

“My own view is custody is the last place you should be... What I’m trying to do is find a sentence that’s best constructed to help you and give you support.”

Sorry I’m going to paraphrase a comment from the daily mail but it summed it up for me “does being ‘bright’ mean the law doesn’t apply to you now?”

So if this lad has a bright future, good God…let’s not let his multiple stabbing of a young girl get in his way.

So depressing. I fear for girls growing up in this society. 😔

Such an awful story - that poor girl. After his arrest the boy was initially in a secure unit for 3 months. The Judge gave him bail in June. On being released the stayed out until 1.30am in breach of his bail conditions and resulting in his tag not being fitted until the following day. No consequences of course.

There's something deeply wrong with some of the people who serve as judges.

-Judges who have something wrong about them. Yes. Psychiatric reports on some of them might be surprising.

IwantToRetire · Yesterday 21:56

Worth remembering that many men accusing of rape were not found guilty by Juries because both the men and the women in the jury thought it wasn't fair that a "bright" man would have his reputation tarnished by being found guilty.

Which is disgusting.

But as said by PP to say arriving with and knife and stabbing 10 times can not be said to be just "mischief" is beyond belief.

But isn't it in Scottish legislation that a man 25 and younger can be treated leniently as recognised the male brain takes longer to mature.

Just so many ways men can be found not responsible for their own actions.

Isn't there just. I often bring Jill up when these kind of things happen because she used her unthinkable ordeal to fight so hard for the protection of future generations of women and it's terrifying how we can look back at so much of what went on forty years ago and rightly jbe appalled at some of the stuff that was normal back then.

Except it seems where VAWG and judges are concerned.

This is horrific, and must be contested for being too lenient surely. That poor girl and her family. Comparing this to ‘mischief’ is disgusting and dangerous, completely minimising it. The 14 year old boys I went to school with knew right from wrong and actually worried about and defended girls from some much older, pervy men who worked at the local kebab shop. Boys hitting girls was really frowned upon. The justice system had got to get a handle on this.

Dollymylove · Yesterday 22:06

If I was the parent of this girl I would be quietly arranging some retribution. If the judiciary wont protect our daughters then we have to make alternative arrangements

So the message this sends to young girls is Always #BeKind and say yes if a boy asks you out (even if you want to say no) so they don't get upset and stab you. Otherwise it'll be your own fault and you'll only have yourself to blame.

Brilliant. What enlightened fucking times we are living in.

Yes I’m absolutely sick of the whole ‘be kind’ stuff. I have already taught my daughter since she could talk to say ‘back off’ in a loud, assertive voice if any child is rough with her and to give them a shove back if they don’t stop, especially if it’s a boy, and that I’ll back her 100%. She did stand tall and tell one of her brother’s older friends to ‘back off!’
when he was being a little you know what at the park. Brilliant! Time to bring back some old school defending ourselves and stop all the pandering to the guilty culprits.

“We are dealing with a 14-year-old. They tend to be a little bit temperamental,” said Judge Lawrie, at the next court hearing.

“The planning, the thought process, the carrying of the knife, and what I’ve seen on the CCTV, the actions which frankly stand out markedly as dangerous."

Judge Lawrie also commissioned a psychiatric report which suggested the boy might have autism.

“He has a number of issues and difficulties but not of a nature or an order that means that I take the view he’s a danger,” said the judge in September.

I would imagine he did have a fixation on her, felt wronged, hyper focused on how to 'right' that wrong, fairly common for young men with ASD but his was to solve his problem violently

That in my view makes him dangerous, he will hyper fixate on others I would imagine, whether that be a girlfriend or employer or next door neighbour.

Im not sure why the judge thinks his problems dont cause him to be a danger, its obvious that he has social/communication/emotional problems that cause him to be dangerous.

It goes without saying that I'm not wishing violence or intimidation on anyone, but I'd love to know how Mr Judge would feel if the next object of this boys affection was a female member of his family.

womendeserveequalhumanrights · Yesterday 22:22

I think when a judge so clearly priorities perpetrator over victim questions should be asked about whether he's fit for his job. In this case there seems to be bias on the basis of sex which we all know is a PC in EA 2010.

He's paid by taxpayers 50% female. His prior cases should be reviewed and if a pattern of discrimination is found he should be fired.

ramonaquimby · Yesterday 22:23

it's always bastard male judges feeling sorry for the boys who commit crimes against girls

HedgehogHome · Yesterday 22:25

The article says they were at the same school. I wonder if he’s been removed from the school since he has a restraining order - or does the victim end up moving schools to avoid him.

Nobody sounds safe around him.

Such a good point- he should be the one to have to move school if they do both attend the same school. Again, I’m sick of how hard it is for schools to permanently expel violent pupils to protect both other students and their staff.

“Mischief” ffs

Mischief is knocking at a door and taking off
Stabbing a girl whose knocked you back isn't in the same fucking league.
He's one dangerous little fucker
That curfew crap needs changing to secure unit sentence.
Agree with your sentiment💯

If it’s a restraining order or bail condition then he would have been removed from the school. The school would still be obligated to educate him, likely through an alternative provision or pupil referral unit.

Restraining order only for 3 years, and he ignored the curfew on day one, so I doubt that makes her feel any safer.

“Mischief” ffs

That stuck out for me too…and also keep out of mischief.

Stabbing a girl 10 times with a knife is mischief? Wtaf? And I read the father was appalled but hoped the girl ‘would get over it soon’. As if that attack has not scarred her and scared her for life. It’s just so apparent that neither boys nor men give a shit about girls and women. Not one shit.

And before anyone starts, yes, yes NAMALT.

hotmumshit · Yesterday 22:44

Well mumsnet did their thing before with those three rapists.

Let's do it again. 😡

BreatheAndFocus · Yesterday 22:50

Disgusting, ignorant and sexist sentence from an absolute dimwit twat of a judge! 😡 😡

This is enraging! Who gives a shit whether this little scrote is “bright”! What? Bright people can’t be dangerous? Well, that’s clearly wrong, isn’t it? Or is it, the law doesn’t apply to bright people?

Imagine getting a knife, going to a shop and stabbing a girl just because she knocked you back! You’d have to be pretty disturbed and lacking self control, empathy and morals to do that.

This nasty thuggish teen needs a custodial sentence.

lcakethereforeIam · Yesterday 23:09

If they're not 'bright' they have learning difficulties, or are socially awkward, there's always some damn excuse for letting them off.

JustAnotherWhinger · Yesterday 23:14

There has to be some sort of protest into that judge.

his language is fucking appalling!

Stay out of mischief? Teenagers tend to be ‘a little bit temperamental’? And he doesn’t view him as dangerous? WTF?

He stabbed another person multiple times. In what way is his fixation on her and handling of that not suggesting that he’s dangerous?

Is it now only classed as dangerous if the woman or girl dies? Or if the boy or man isn’t “bright” or doesn’t have “potential”

Its outrageous.

I recommend Krav Maga. I put both mine in after an incident at their school.

Agreed ,if you stab someone ten times no less surely that's the intent.
Most of us have experienced a rejection in the teen years
Embarrassing yes
Stabbing..emphatic no
