Judge lets ‘bright lad’ who stabbed girl 10 times avoid jail

The young offender – who cannot be named because he is under 18 – had become obsessed with the girl at his school. He began using fake social media accounts to send her messages after she rejected his advances in December last year.

One morning in March, he waited for the girl near the shop and asked her out on a date. When she said no, he followed her, with a knife in his pocket and stabbed her at least 10 times, inflicting cuts to her neck, hands and face.

Footage released by the police shows the boy chasing the girl through the store with the knife in his hand.

...

Transcripts of court hearings in the case, seen by The Telegraph, reveal that Judge Ian Lawrie KC’s principal consideration was the offender’s rehabilitation.

“You’re a bright lad – I’m going to impose a curfew,” the judge said.
“You’re not to contact directly or indirectly by any means, social media or otherwise, [the victim] and her mother, and also keep out of mischief.

“My own view is custody is the last place you should be... What I’m trying to do is find a sentence that’s best constructed to help you and give you support.”

Disgusting! He will do it again and that judge will have blood on his hands

Christ! What message does that send?

“We are dealing with a 14-year-old. They tend to be a little bit temperamental,” said Judge Lawrie, at the next court hearing.

“The planning, the thought process, the carrying of the knife, and what I’ve seen on the CCTV, the actions which frankly stand out markedly as dangerous."

Judge Lawrie also commissioned a psychiatric report which suggested the boy might have autism.

“He has a number of issues and difficulties but not of a nature or an order that means that I take the view he’s a danger,” said the judge in September.

Judge lets 14-year-old boy who stabbed girl 10 times walk free from court after telling him he's a 'bright lad' | LBC

The 14-year-old, who can't be named for legal reasons, followed the girl into a shop in Cirencester with a six-inch kitchen knife before grabbing her and stabbing her repeatedly earlier this year

This is a justice system and a judge unfit for purpose.

MrsTerryPratchett · Yesterday 19:44

Shameless theft of a SM post.

The reason we have sex offenders as Presidents and billionaires is because we DIDN'T ruin the lives of promising young men.

whattheftodo · Yesterday 19:46

“Mischief” ffs

SorryforyourlossMoveon · Yesterday 20:08

Keep out of mischief.... Jesus fucking Christ, I despair 🤬

Minasama · Yesterday 20:09

Good God! Little shite is really dangerous and needs a lesson. If he’s bright, prison will have done him good. What about the poor girl? What about his next victim?

Irritableowlwan · Yesterday 20:13

Once again showing that a males life and lifestyle is more important than a females. It is abhorrant.

Dreadingtheday · Yesterday 20:15

Is there anything that can be done about this in terms of complaints?

I mean, saying that the boy isn’t a danger when he already stabbed people… that judge should not be serving

IwantToRetire · Yesterday 20:17

I think it only applies to Crown Courts

I think this was in a Crown Court.

Isn’t this what the judge said to Ted Bundy? Bright young man?

How does this abhorrence continue?

Bloody hell. He should be in a psychiatric institution.

Dreadingtheday · Yesterday 20:26

Okay, as far as I can see this has generated complaints because we can’t complain about it! Something to do with the youth sentencing system.

But now they are looking at how that works and saying it should be subject to appeal

Unsurprisingly, googled the judge… not the first crazy similar decision he has made

And a 6" kitchen blade that he brought with him as he hunted her down. So, he brought the weapon with him, which I thought was an aggravating factor, and it seems clear to me that this was premeditated.

I hope the judge's optimism is warranted.

Yes - why would a person bring a 6 inch knife with them to ask someone out?

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · Yesterday 21:02

The BlackBelt Barrister have a few things to say about this.

s

He's using the article in The Telegraph and he's complaining that the Judge called GBH with Intent, with a 6 inch knife, 'mischief'.

womendeserveequalhumanrights · Yesterday 21:13

Judge needs to be sacked. Boy needs to go to prison. We know what happens when violent males get away with it, they escalate. It's not in the boy's best interests, he'll think he can do the same and worse. The only chance he has to turn things around is if he's punished severely now.

Bloody love the BB barrister. Thoroughly decent man. Very much recommend his YouTube channels. Very balanced, evidence based and detailed analysis and explanation of the law. We need more like him rather than the disgrace of a judge in this case.

Got to be honest when Judges like this one - Ian Lawrie - do this it makes me wonder why they see young girls as not deserving of human rights.

JazzyJelly · Yesterday 21:29

That's genuinely terrifying. Both the boy and girl will have been sent the message that male violence against women and girls is fine.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · Yesterday 21:32

So the message this sends to young girls is Always #BeKind and say yes if a boy asks you out (even if you want to say no) so they don't get upset and stab you. Otherwise it'll be your own fault and you'll only have yourself to blame.

Brilliant. What enlightened fucking times we are living in.

alcovecupboards · Yesterday 21:37

Utterly disgusting and utterly unsurprising.

Heggettypeg · Yesterday 21:43

I bet if he'd stabbed the judge ten times it would have been a whole other story.

MrsOvertonsWindow · Yesterday 21:44

Such an awful story - that poor girl. After his arrest the boy was initially in a secure unit for 3 months. The Judge gave him bail in June. On being released the stayed out until 1.30am in breach of his bail conditions and resulting in his tag not being fitted until the following day. No consequences of course.

There's something deeply wrong with some of the people who serve as judges.
