Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

Swashy, I took these photos of the Bergen harbour fish stalls for an angler friend but I think you might enjoy them too.

We sampled some whale, reindeer and moose slices at one of the stalls there, I remember! And bought some cloudberry jam, which lasted about 5 minutes.

Wow @MyrtleLion! I’m losing weight on the Wegovy, but basically at about a pound a week. Down 30lb since March, about another 20 to go but I’m fairly relaxed about it.

@Magpiecomplex- I’m going to be based in either Herts or Bucks at the weekends depending which week, but weekends are the only time I can get to see my children and grandchildren because they all work in the week. I’m in Bucks from the 19th to the 22nd if you have any time then - happy to come and meet up for lunch or a coffee somewhere in ThatLondon. DM me if you want to discuss details!

Not weight-loss drugs, methylphenidate for ADHD. I lost the first four stone eating only between 11 and 7pm, no white carbs, and eating reduced calories two days a week.

I'm really pleased the weight-loss drugs are working for you. And how lovely for you to be back in the UK, 💙

I haven't RTFT yet, but thought you might like a late night treat...

41. Departures and Arrivals

In which even enthusiasm is enthusiastic…

“Carlisle and St David’s,” said @AngleofRepose. “Nobody has looked at them.”

@ErrolTheDragon is outside,” said Gosie, “and Carlisle is minutes away.”

That was all that needed to be said. Angle turned to a clean page, wrote Carlisle at the top of one column and St David’s at the top of the other, and then the room went from sitting to moving without any standing up in between.

Errol put her head through the door and asked where.

“Carlisle,” said Angle.

“I know Carlisle,” said Errol. “There is a wall. I will need a picnic.”

The kitchen hatch opened before she had finished speaking, and Gourmet’s voice came through it asking how many, and every gerbil in the room answered at once.

“I’M GOING,” said Gantry. “I HAVE NEVER FLOWN.”

“You have never flown because you shout,” said Girdle. “Errol will hear you through the whole of Cumbria.”

“I WILL SHOUT QUIETLY.”

Gadget wanted to go because she had nothing else on, even though she was organising a birthday for the next day. Garnet asked whether there were seeds in Carlisle, revised the question to whether there were luxury seeds in Carlisle, and did not get an answer to either.

Gossamer had climbed onto the coat hooks for a better view of who was going, and three gerbils had climbed onto Gossamer.

@Chickadeeinme came in from the yard with her mohawk flattened on one side from sleeping on a train, took one look at the room, and said, “What have I missed?”

“Sweden,” said Girdle.

“1951,” said Gimbal.

“Paris,” said Magpie, from her peanuts.

“St David’s,” said Angle, and put a pencil line under it. “You’re going to St David’s. Pembrokeshire.”

Chickadee looked at the column with her name now at the top of it. “Fine,” she said, and went to the bar to see if Magpie had left any peanuts. She had not, but Grub placed a bowl in front of Chickadee before she had time to ask for it.

The Cambrian Traveller’s Guide,” said Grisaille, from something written down, “describes St David’s as the largest city in Wales.”

“Thank you, Grisaille,” said @Hedgehogforshort.

The door opened again and in came @PastaAllaNorma, back from the Welsh borders with her camera strap across her chest and a road atlas folded open to a page it had not been designed to fold open at.

“Hereford,” she said. “No mark.”

“You’ve been gone for ages,” said Girdle.

“I know,” said Pasta. “There’s a window in the nave called Ascension. It’s a memorial to the SAS, who are based there, and it was installed in 2017. It’s nine metres high and contains 3,000 pieces of glass. It is a beautiful window, and I had to just look at it.”

She put her camera on the table and Glossy’s door opened immediately. “There’s a blue stone sculpture underneath it that you can put your hand on. I looked at every centimetre of leading I could reach and then I found a verger with a ladder and looked at the rest. Nothing. But, oh my goodness, the glass...”

Angle wrote Hereford, Ascension, 2017, no mark, and added the verger and the ladder.

“Where is everyone off to all of a sudden?” asked Pasta.

“St David’s,” said four gerbils at once. “And Carlisle.”

At the other end of the room, three plans were happening at the same time and none of them was finished.

“Can Errol drop Chickadee and the St David’s gerbils on the way?” asked Girdle.

“St David’s is not on the way to Carlisle,” said Geography. “It is on the way to Ireland.”

“Errol could go to Ireland.”

“Errol is not going to Ireland.”

“Chickadee flies,” said Ganges. “Chickadee could carry someone.”

“Chickadee is a bird,” said Chickadee, from the bar. “Not a bus.”

Gantry had got as far as the yard and was standing under Errol’s chin explaining, at volume, how quiet she would be.

By the time Gantry, Gadget, and Garnet had been lifted onto Errol’s back next to the picnic basket lashed there by Gordian who understood knots, the room had started to empty.

Chickadee was at the door with a camera from Glossy and a piece of paper from Angle, and she was not alone.

“I’m coming,” said Gwenllian, who had not spoken before that evening, and who was already wearing a coat.

“As am I,” said Glamorgan.

“It’s Welsh Wales,” said Gwenllian, as if this settled it, and the gerbils around her nodded as if it did.

“What is Welsh Wales?” asked Girdle.

“It’s the Welsh bit,” said Glamorgan.

“All of Wales is Welsh.”

“Not like St David’s,” said Gwenllian. “St David’s is Welsh Wales.”

Chickadee looked at the two of them, then at the piece of paper in her hand, and wrote two more names on it. “You carry your own food,” she said. “I’m not a bus.”

They went out into the yard, where Errol was lifting off with a noise like the roof coming away, yet could be heard Gantry shouting the instructions about the back of the camera so that she wouldn’t forget them.

The bar was practically empty when @RandomHypatia arrived carrying a camera and a notebook with figures in it.

“Gloucester,” she said.

“And?” asked Angle.

“The Lady Chapel,” Hypatia said as Glossy took her camera before she could put it down. “The side windows are all by Christopher Whall, from about 1900. There is a magnificent light of virgin martyrs, and I stood under it for a long time because the colours were mesmerising. Second tier, first on the left. St Agnes.”

Hypatia opened her notebook to a page that was mostly a sketch. “The Margrave’s mark is in the leading under her feet.”

Oh how marvellous, Myrtle!

Chickadeeinme · 11/09/2026 01:22

Oh wonderful, @MyrtleLion! (I’m actually visiting Wales for a few days when I’m in the UK, though not that far south - I went to St.David’s years ago so I can picture it). Thank you for reminding people that a chickadee is about the same size as a gerbil so definitely not a bus!

Where in Wales are you going, Chickadee?

I once chopped down a pyracantha that dominated a very small garden. I spent weeks anointing myself with TCP because the 1000s of scratches got infected.

I have ever had a wood that I wanted everyone else to stay out of, I'd hedge in pyracantha, and the wood pigeons would get so vast on the berries that they'd barely be able to fly.

Do you think the Hedge of Thorns around Sleeping Beauty's castle was actually pyracantha? 🤔

MyrtleLion · 11/09/2026 07:53

I'm not guaranteeing an episode a day again just yet. I can't believe it's been nearly a week since I last posted. But I had some time last night and the drafting and editing went really well.

Or it was a relative of the rose bush that was in our garden when we moved in, and there remains. It has 7 leaflets, the flowers are prolific, only last about 30 seconds but smell divine, and the thorns are so vicious I have to wear safety goggles to do anything to it. I am contemplating kevlar oversleeves before winter pruning commences this year.

I too chortled at that.

backformoreofthesame · 11/09/2026 08:24

I hope they won’t be disappointed with st David’s as it’s distinctly English sounding

the only welsh accent was the lad in the wee supermarket - I suspect he busses in from elsewhere

No, if it was she’d be sleeping still.

On the subject of stained glass, the National War Memorial of Scotland, which looks like a large church in the middle of Edinburgh Castle, has some very moving tributes to the many Scots who gave their lives in WWI and thereafter.

@EmpressaurusKitty thank you for sharing your adventures with us. I think the Norwegian tourist board should employ you as there's quite a few of us now considering a trip to Norway!

@EdithStourton your comment about beef cattle reminded me of this picture my sister sent of a ginormous horse.

I always go and look at the horses at ag shows...

Chersfrozenface · 11/09/2026 09:31

Barley Saturday (Dydd Sadwrn Barlys), last Saturday in April, in Aberteifi/Cardigan.

Parade along the streets with horses and ponies groomed until they look like silk satin stretched over eye-popping muscles. Also tractors.

I've only been once. Really must go again.

Yeah, it's so moving (and by far the best bit of visiting the castle, but I'm not a huge fan of it in general).

We went a few years ago and had a look for men from the same area as my late mum, who shared her (hyper-local) surname. There were so, so many of them, the villages these boys came from must have been absolutely devastated 😢

He's 19.6 hands high.
Proving the old saying 'Many hands make high horse'😀

I'll catch up later, boring things to do this morning.
I'm really looking forward to the latest Gosie adventure!

AngleofRepose · 11/09/2026 10:39

Bore da!

"I WILL SHOUT QUIETLY.” 😁 Yay for Gantry!

Thanks for the latest chapter @MyrtleLion
I love the banter and the fact that Bluestockingers just keep popping in and flying out! That picture is superb, as well.

I'm afraid that Grisaille is quite wrong, as is Gwenllian (Pembrokeshire is notoriously considered NOT Cymru Cymraeg, although it depends on who you get into an argument with 😬) But, I do love Grisaille's absolute conviction with all of her "facts."

Feeling a bit low this morning, as I've realized that it is 25 years since 9/11, and I don't suppose I'll ever feel right about this day again. Strange to think there has been an entire generation of kids who have grown up knowing this day only as "history."

I suppose it's similar to how my parents felt when they heard about Kennedy or Martin Luther King, or Kent State.

It's always a strange day for me.

But, the tractors and horses discussion is cheering me up. And Sleeping Beauty's thorn forest? Blackthorn, would be my guess!

That reminds me of a mission I must try to undertake while here - get to the Palau De La Musica in Barcelona. The stained glass is reported to be incredible.

The largest expanse of secular stained glass in the world was in my home city, but that's since been overtaken by others. We still have the largest in Britain, but it's nothing like as complex or beautiful as those in the cathedrals.

I had a little grin at that too. In my experience the Welsh speaking bits of Wales are more like Gwynedd, Anglesey (Ynys Mon) or Carmarthen.

My sister in law and my cousins went to Welsh language secondary schools. I grew up elsewhere and have bugger all Welsh

It felt very suspicious that the cathedrals in Oslo & Bergen just happened to be closed on the days / times I was there. Hope you have better luck Pasta!
