The era of mythical misogyny vs real harms to women and girls

Brilliant article in spiked by Georgina Mumford and really resonated for me.

What's the point of spending who knows how much public money on the cringeworthy 'maaate' campaign (with as far as I know no actual positive impact) if you're not going to actually do anything about all the state services turning a blind eye over grooming gangs and the courts letting rapists off with slap on the wrist, or more commonly rapists not be charged at all in the first place.

The era of mythical misogyny

Our politicians would rather focus on the ‘manosphere’ or ‘toxic masculinity’ than tackle actual violence against women and girls.

I thought the comparison of the reaction to 'Adolescence' vs 'Three Girls' by politicians was very important.

Yes agree

extremely interesting article, thank you.

she's not wrong that set alongside the catalogue of just not giving a shit that let Simon Levy run wild, things like the GLA website https://www.london.gov.uk/what-misogyny hosting a page called 'what is misogyny?' with some pretty fucking stupid examples ('Treating women differently from men in social and professional settings.', someone needs to talk to my work about their obsessive need to make all women talk about the fucking menopause almost constantly then) look like almost strategic incompentence

MoaningKeating · 31/08/2026 16:47

A lot of it is class based.

Working class white girls are ignored, the home office in their notorious asylum booklet mocked up a passport of 16-year-old Janine Cooper from Manchester stating that she was now legal to have sex with.

I would even go further and say that the majority of users on this website are middle-class so don't care either.

Bloody hell - what page is that on? I hope there was some mention of consent at least?

Edited to add: Actually it's still not ok. Is the UK Government basically advertising girls of 16 or older as fair game as a way to entice more men to the UK illegally? If any woman is in doubt whether the government is actively choosing to prioritise male wants over women and girls' safety, here's the proof.

That is just dreadful

Fucking hell. Why not just serve them up on a conveyor belt of depravity chronologically.

Be aware of this DOB, but after that you're fucking golden.

WTF is 'mythical misogyny'? is it the kind that only exists in storybooks and won't do you any harm because it never happens?

Here's the definition: mytical misogyny is

a collection of ill-defined, impossible-to-measure cultural phenomena that are constantly invoked as signs of a grave societal problem. These include toxic masculinity, red-pill content, menslib subreddits, rape culture on campuses, and so on

Oh that's all right, then, nothing to worry about then! silly us for getting bothered about mythical things like rape culture!

And above all, let's not upset anybody with facts about male violence against women
Is it really a given that thousands of British boys will grow up to be ‘violent abusers’ if the government doesn’t manage to divert them on to a different path?

Well, it is a given that thousands of British boys will grow up to be violent abusers, given that there will be about 740,000 rapes in the UK every year, and a woman killed by a man every 3 days - or is that just 'mythical misogyny'?

It might be quixotic of the government to think they can 'divert them on to a different path', but if only something, somebody, could divert the thousands of British boys who, the stats show, will grow up to be violent abusers!

But wait, we mustn't say that because rather than worrying about the raped and murdered women, we should be
concerned about what 'such a suggestion communicates to a teenage boy during what is already one of the most confusing, self-conscious periods of his life'
The feelings of teenage boys are more important than protecting women and girls.

Given that rapists can be as young as 13, the earlier boys and girls are taught about consent the better, and there's not reason to believe that it will 'communicate' anything to a 'confused' teenage boy anything other than that rape is wrong, and girls are human beings not objects.

But let's not get it all out of proportion, women! Don't panic! Ignore all that 'mythical misogyny' mullarkey!
It is highly unusual in this country, due to prevailing cultural norms and mores, to have a stranger shove his hands up your skirt in a public place as he forces his mouth on to yours, or to be slapped on the backside by a passing cyclist as you go about your day. It is even more unusual to be picked up off the street, coerced into a dark corner and raped by a stranger.

So it is 'highly unusual' to be sexually assaulted or raped. That's such a relief! So stop going on about it, ladies, stop quoting statistics about rape and sexual assault and femicide, because it might confuse teenage boys and hurt men's feelings, and that's what really matters, isn't it?

This article seems to suggest that there's Misogyny Lite, which it's silly to get worked up about, and then there's Real Harmful Misogyny which is the only kind of misogyny society should be worried about.

Where is the wellbeing and safety of all women from all forms of misogyny in this analysis?

Did you read the article, because it reads like you didn't? She's saying that it's not much point having things like 'misogyny' lessons in schools if rapists don't get custodial sentences and aren't even charged. She's talking about the sleight of hand in the UK government (across all parties, but Labour are particularly bad) that claims 'Adolescence ' (a scenario that has never happened in the UK) is so important as to be screened in all schools but 'Three Girls' -based on the real life rape and also sometimes murder of girls enabled by the state- must be ignored. Pretend addressing of misogyny that doesn't exist vs actual real world harms.

She's explicitly saying that we should worry more about actual violence, actual rape, keep good actual statistics rather than have a 'maaate' campaign whilst sexual assault in London soars.

She's talking about counterproductive performative wankery which is a drain on the public purse whilst we STILL haven't had the rape gang inquiry.

I mean i don't know about you but if it's a choice between spending millions of public money on making sure men don't say 'cheer up, luv' (which I don't like but isn't going to kill me) over stopping the rape of children and the fact that rape is basically legal then I'm choosing the stopping actual rape, thanks.

Fucking hell.

They are pointing out that the age of consent is 16. In many countries it is lower (e.g. France, 15) so it needs to be explained. They could have had a boy's passport, of course.
I don't think it is intended to suggest girls over the age of 16 are available consenting or not; it is stating the law here.
Sometimes one can overthink things.

This was the page.

Bloody hell. Thank you for posting but WTAF.

That definitely implies girls over 16 are fair game. Lack of emphasis that the girl can say no and that no should be assumed in most circumstances.

They could have had another line immediately saying 'It is a crime to have sex with anyone over 16 who doesn't want to' - I'm sure there's better wording but that needs to be said on the same page. They could have NOT had a girls passport page and just had the words. It's really creepy that there's a passport page like that.

Pingponghavoc · 31/08/2026 20:39

They could just state that sex without consent is illegal and children under sixteen cannot consent.

Mocking up id for a girl in Manchester is really strange.

Quite. Especially with the well-known facts of the grooming gangs including the geographical location of some of the most well-known paedophile rings / grooming gangs and the demographic profile of the victims.

It's very creepy and disturbing that THIS was what they went for. A British sounding name, a GBR citizen, a 16 year old girl from a certain location with a strong suggestion as to her ethnicity (given name, citizenship, location) with well-known problems concerning the authorities allowing and enabling rape of British girls of this age and younger.

OP posts:
womendeserveequalhumanrights · 31/08/2026 21:03

Why not Shabana Mahmood a 16 year old British girl from Bourton-on-the-Water? Or I don't know Plymouth?

OP posts:
womendeserveequalhumanrights · 31/08/2026 21:08

We know that some immigrant men really see white British young girls as fair game - unless you're explicitly addressing this, having a passport page like this alongside saying anyone UNDER 16 is illegal is really giving out a dangerous message in my opinion and probably making any girls who look 16 or older less safe.

"They could've had a boy's passport".

But they didn't.

An artist employed by the Home Office had to come up with this image, under the Home Office's direction of what details to include, then reviewed and signed off by various managers etc. And it really shows what they think of certain women and girls.

What a way to put a message across.
