What are you talking about? Adults are not the same as children!

Adult butch women were never children with the same gendered inclinations?

hastenotwaste · 27/08/2026 08:59

In any case, there is no problem with being a "tom boy". As JKR said, dress however you please. The problems arise when society starts telling you that the way you dress or feel alters what sex you are. Or that you should take steps to modify your sex to fit in with your "gender identity ". This is the problem, not climbing trees or having short hair (both of which I do!)

Imdunfer · 27/08/2026 09:00

Whether you can accept it or not JKR is engaging in a faulty generalisation about trans men suffering from tom boy syndrome because she is comparing her own 'tom boy' experience to it not to mention this is a widely used trope in the anti trans community.

A trope? How is it a trope when most children, if puberty blockers are denied, will grow out of their hands identification once puberty is complete?

How is it a trope in women to think they might have become trans if they were a child today, if they are of an age to have been a tomboy when it was absolutely clear that changing sex is not possible? To think that if they were that young person now, when and tomboys are strongly encouraged by the trans community to believe that they are male and can become male, they might well have transitioned.

Don't write off my experience and that of others because it inconveniently disrupts your narrative.

omg can you imagine if they have Emma next??? Would she be brave enough?

Ahhh so you admit not all 'tom boys' are 'temporary' given that butch women don't magically become butch at 18.

Now we are finally getting some where to understanding why JKR was trafficking in harmful stereotypes. WELL DONE!

AimsAndObjectives · 27/08/2026 09:04

I think the simple explanation is that actors are realising that whatever they do or say will never be enough for the TRAs, so they might as well make the choices that benefit their careers and bank balances. This will be an easy decision for those who only pretended to believe TWAW and TMAM in the first place (which is probably nearly all of them).

I don't think agreeing to still be associated with an idea is in any way a concession to the creator's moral or political stance or helps perpetuate it. John Lithgow made this point recently that the work still maintains its value regardless & that's why he agreed to still be part of HP.

Just like the US constitution still maintains its moral relevance despite being written by slave owners, JKR's immoral position shouldn't matter particularly because the ideas in HP are contra to it that effectively inculcate generations of people against JKR's personal bigotry which only has a finite existence.

Edited

Despite five attempts, this is still incoherent. Do you want to try a sixth re-write?

Well, well, well. Has Grint decided that JKR isn’t a monster after all?

Penis News is a bit disappointed in him.

"Penis News"?!

Are you twelve?

Oh bog off with your patronising guff. Who said all tom boys are going through temporary phases? You're not actually engaging with what anyone is saying just imagining what you would like us to say. I'm out. I suggest you start actually listening to women with an open mind if you are able.

This definitely plays a part. Imagine though. How many years have they been trying to destroy JKR now? And still the books sell, the audiences go to the plays, the series get commissioned. Must be infuriating. No wonder they always seem so cross.

Nellodee · 27/08/2026 09:15

Sorry, Northern Lights. If you’d have told me in advance that you were correct because you were telepathic and knew exactly what other people thought, even when they were telling you they thought the exact opposite, I would have of course not bothered engaging you in a discussion about something so dull as boring old logic. Silly old me for debating in good faith. Pigeon chess it is.

Particularly infuriating for them that so many of those purchases are made by their own TRA siblings. Who then try to guilt-offset their purchase with a donation to Mermaids.😂

TheKeatingFive · 27/08/2026 09:20

Honestly, with Rupert I imagine he just needs the money. Simple as that.

His career post HP hasn’t exactly been stellar. HP is his only real calling card. Might as well.

He can’t afford to cave to the TRA mob.

Not true, I'm afraid. Puberty blockers were only ever suitable for a select few trans kids for a very limited time.

The vast majority of trans boys get no gender care at all, yet still socially transition and go to school as themselves.

The vast majority emerge from that hellfire traumatised by bullying, coping with dysphoria - and still trans. Often having dropped out of school. Some get support, but most do not.

They weren't 'tomboys' to start with. They were trans.

Wanting the freedoms boys have, and rejecting gender stereotypes, is incredibly common among cis girls. Being trans is not, and many trans boys are very gender nonconforming, meaning they reject stereotypes in work, clothing, behaviour etc.

You weren't trans, and they weren't tomboys.

I'm sure it suits you to believe that surviving school while trans, and going through a traumatic, unwanted puberty, is easy. It really isn't, even if (as is not common) a trans child has parental support. There is no community sitting with a trans child on the daily school bus while literally dozens of kids gang up on them. None to walk the streets and corridors with them, or comfort them at night.

Trans boys grow up, in the vast majority of cases, into trans men. It is a difficult, horribly risky existence with online agitators constantly spreading misinformation that directly enables street violence.

No one would be trans unless it meant everything to them.

Yeah, realistically the changing landscape erodes any pragmatic argument for actors avoiding Harry Potter. I don't think it's even just the ones who were going along with the crowd, we're now at a point where someone who genuinely does think TWAW but doesn't regard it as a central issue could comfortably participate.

Though I do think some of them were true believers. Daniel Radcliffe has always given me that impression.

Nellodee · 27/08/2026 09:33

Roughly 75% of the trans boys I have taught have no longer been trans at the end of secondary school. That’s a very small sample size (about 8) and I’m in no way suggesting that proportion is representative, but to suggest that detransitioning in teenagers is rare does not in any way match my personal experience. If your experience of trans men is mostly adult trans men, then of course, you are going to experience that relative frequency very differently.

thirdfiddle · 27/08/2026 09:35

Ooh we've got another typical-behaviours-er. They can go and have a typical behaviours party on their own little thread.

Meanwhile, cute for Grint to take up this role as an adult. Nice to see people behaving like grown-ups, whether or not he's changed his mind. If I only worked with people I agreed with on all topics, I'd be sitting at home on my own.

It is a fact that in the past, before the enormous encouragement of the trans movement existed, the vast majority of children expressing a desire to change sex stopped expressing that desire after puberty.

hastenotwaste · 27/08/2026 09:39

Not really. Why are there so many girls identifying as trans than there were 20 years ago? How can we differentiate between those for whom it IS a passing phase and those who will continue into adulthood? Answer: we don't need to if we treat them all with kindness and respect and allow them to grow up without medical intervention.

We would otherwise expect to see relatively large numbers of adult women, who expressed such a desire as children, now coming out as transmen. And we just aren’t seeing that.

hastenotwaste · 27/08/2026 09:42

@Nellodee Yes. Unless you have worked/known a lot of teenage girls I don't think you can fully be aware of the issue. At one point my friend's daughter was in a class where over half the girls identified as trans or NB. Needless to say, they mostly desisted.

Agree.

Yet another TRA resorting to adolescent insults as their response (can’t call it a rebuttal) to questions and comments. They might as well go ‘nah nah nah because I said so’ in terms of the quality of their argument. They sound young.

NotBadConsidering · 27/08/2026 09:50

This is telling isn’t it? This is why so many children who have suffered trauma claim a trans identity. It’s the only thing they can have that can be everything to them, when they have nothing else.

A friend of mine had the same experience. Whereas DD has none in her form.
