Women and children worldwide have been subject to abuse and exploitation by Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok. I know this message board is primarily concerned with trans issues at the moment, and be that as it may, I think we also need to recognise new dangers facing us and our girls.

From a plaintiff’s case in the states:
‘Jane Doe 4, from Wyoming, is part of the suit against Musk and Grok. Her stepfather created 7,000 images and videos of her from a single photograph taken when she was 11. The AI-generated images included depictions of her nude, performing sexual acts on men, including her stepfather. Some images also included explicit captions.’

Here in the UK, MP Jess Asato has instigated a legal challenge against Musk and his company.

I’ve been virulent about my safety and women’s safety in the real world, since it’s becoming a scarier and scarier place. Seeing that my images, and the images of my child, are not safe either, just makes me feel that no one is taking women and women’s issues seriously. It’s a huge step back.

Maybe we can do something with Rage against the screen?

Labour MP suing Elon Musk’s xAI says chatbot added own fake abusive content

Jess Asato’s particulars of claim states Grok added explicit sexual material users had not asked for

It's abhorrent. The only way to end this, I suspect, would be if men stepped up and made it abundantly clear that they wanted this to stop. However, as with other forms of pornography and violence against women and girls, and innumerable examples of not respecting women's boundaries, other men mostly don't seem to feel strongly enough about it to challenge it. Pretty depressing.

BunfightBetty · Yesterday 18:20

It’s obscene. Just sickening. Bad enough to do it at all, but the scale of it is frightening, not least because it speaks to the scale of the potential market for the images.

Gaspode I agree that men need to be part of the solution here. But like you, I am sceptical there will be much appetite to step up.

I think if defenders of women and children (TM) like Her left Twitter, others would follow. Unfortunately too many of this virtuous crowd appear very happy supporting the abuse that Musk thinks is good for everyone. Almost like these defenders don't mean what they claim.

SadiraOfTyr · Yesterday 18:45

Just leave Twitter. It’s really easy. If more people, especially the people (ie women) who get most abuse there, did so then the problem will solve itself. I left it years ago (also Facebook) when I saw the way things were going. Don’t miss it at all.

People should. But then you get the criticisms for not engaging with people with different opinions etc and purity spiralling. Which ignores that it isn't about posting on the same platform as someone with spicy views on what counts as English. It's literally a site that allows other users to create pornographic images of people they dislike and post it straight to their profile. But women will get blamed for leaving, or viewed as weak for enabling themselves to be bullied out.
If it is the "public square" as Elon claims you would think it would be subject to the same levels of behaviour that is expected in actual public squares. Though women have historically been harassed out of those spaces too so maybe it is.

BackToLurk · Yesterday 18:51

If Jess hasn’t left Twitter, I don’t see why anyone else would. She obviously doesn’t feel there’s any conflict between using the platform and suing Musk.

I would leave Twitter if I was her. But it is up to her and I think that by being the person to sue (and take the huge amount of flak and images that will come her way as a result) she is doing other women a favourm the problem is even if you are not in Twitter, people can still use Grok.to create pornographic images of you and circulate them. The idea that you can just leave and not see it feels naive, it is the sort of stuff that can have real world impact. And just in itself it is unacceptable.
"If you don't like the boys sharing pornographic drawings of you then don't look at what they are sharing" is gross. I know that's not what you were saying.

I honestly don’t understand why anyone would be criticised. If you get shitty service from a company you stop doing business with that company. If you don’t you’re an idiot.

There is absolutely no requirement for politicians (or anyone else) to be on social media, it’s only been around for a few years and they did perfectly fine before then.

Not being on British Gas doesn’t stop them being awful to their customers. But it stops them being awful to me.

Yes, but remember how Obama's victory was partly put down to his successful use of Facebook. And after that you had the deliberate manipulation of Facebook users via personal data and algorithms because someone reckoned that was a worthwhile thing to do (Cambridge Analytica). And twitter was bogged up as being a crucial way to reach voters by the left and the right. Traditional print media has declined, lots of people get their news from YouTube or tiktok or watch politicians on podcasts not the news at ten. So, not unreasonably, politicians that want to get elected go to where they think the voters are.
I think X's current importance is and always has been overblown. It was always more popular with journalists so anything going viral on there would be reported elsewhere giving it more reach than it deserved. Now that Musk has it he is very keen to push the narrative people not engaging with it think they are too good for the common voter. But it's less used by actual real people than it ever was. Hopefully it fades from existence soon. But I think female politicians are damned whatever they decide.

I think there will always be different opinions about whether people feel they are better staying somewhere and fighting or leaving. There are many women’s rights campaigners (or defenders of women and children) who have presumably deciding that they would rather be there, possibly diluting the rest of the content, than leave it to ‘the boys’. Arguably it is more understandable for them to use Twitter, for whom it’s a tool, than people who are on just to see what Katie Price (or whoever) is up to.

These are personal decisions that many users have probably considered deeply.

Yes, but they aren't circulating fake porn of you to their customers. If they were that would be a problem for you regardless of whether you were a customer or not.

This is a very good point. Surprised there are people on this board who don’t mind pork being made of them as long as it’s not sent to them!

I can look at fancy dresses on a website. Save those and then separately look up shoes that I think might go with them for a wedding etc. However many clothing websites are smart, and want to encourage me to buy as much as possible. Therefore if I start looking at dresses a "for you" type thing will appear that recommend shoes. This is helpful to me and also makes me more likely to buy shoes which the clothes website wants. It tells you something about the business plan of clothing sites and their users preferences.

Musk knows the people using X might want to creat pornographic images of women and children. That is why he added a tool to Grok that lets people do it at minimum effort AND post this direct to X. This ensures that people use his AI more and boosts usage figures, it also means people are more likely to stay on his site because they are getting services they want. In theory they could go to the effort of doing it themselves, some of them might anyway. But he is making it as easy as possible because he wants to encourage that behaviour because it benefits his site. That this is the case reflects really horribly on X users as a group and on Elon Musk. Because it is so easy it means much more is created than would be otherwise and it is shared in a way that is most damaging to the victims. (It also suggests he hasn't got any other way of monetising his wretched AI except as a porn bot which is odd given AI was meant to be world changing).

Yes, but the others aren't owned by Musk. Politicians are desperate to shut Twitter down because under Musk he has allowed people outside the Establishment Left to have a voice again on the platform.

Before Musk, saying that trans women were men was a ban-able offence.

I believe that they've censored the AI heavily since then, but this really isn't about that.

Huh? With your photo. Like the woman mentioned whose stepfather used a photo of her as an eleven year old to generate pornographic images of her as a child. Like the child actress (14) on Stranger Things who had multiple sexualised images made of her using Grok, like many adult women who criticised Groks ability to make AI porn who then had multiple images made of them in reaction. She is a politician there are images of her available online that can be taken. Anyone who has had photos of themselves taken, even as children, can have those photos uploaded to X and then turned to porn. And then have multiple other users share those photos and produce more.

JustEatThePizza · Yesterday 20:12

Also to add, which is something @Persephonia1966 is not saying, Grok was used to strip people down to bikinis, it doesn't generate porn. The AI images of people in bikinis was then fed into other AI software to produce the porn. Grok should've prevented the bikini images, but I don't think it was producing anything more explicit.

Therefore the other AI companies are actually on the hook for producing the porn. But it's much more sensationalist to say that it's all done on Musk's platform.

moto748e · Yesterday 20:15

The veneer of civilised behaviour (of men, if you will) is thin. A further real damage is done to by eliminating or reducing past taboos, "sex work is just work" is an obvious example. Men don't use prostitutes, in part, because it s shameful, or embarrassing, or they wouldn't want their friends to know. But now technology permits people to do things they'd have never dreamed possible a few years back, like this. An 'anything goes' world is obviously bad news for women.

Bikinis plus suggestive poses that echo porn shots. Also women in bikinis with ball gags in their mouths, crying etc. Musk absolutely knew what he was doing by enabling Grok to create those images. As do you by excusing it.

Ah ok. Even more reason not to upload photos of yourself online! Although I suppose if you are a politician there will be photos of you on the commons website and in newspapers and the like.
