I know this doesn't belong here but given the bollocks from the GLP about issues that do I thought people might be interested.

It's about Professor Jason Arday, a Cambridge academic. The story started when there was a claim that large chunks of his PhD thesis had been taken from another (sometimes not even changing typo errors) published a few years earlier. His justification is that he's autistic and his way of coping is 'mimicry'.

Sine then his many claims about his charity work, fundraising and physical exploits have come under increasing scrutiny - much from the Guardian - and are unravelling fast. He's having to backtrack and 'explain' a lot. He's claimed to have been on a TV programme that he never was and it was chronologically impossible for him to be on it. He has claimed a lot of nasty harassment but has no evidence of it, no photos, no messages, and didn't report any of it to the police. (Well he claims he did once, but the police have no record of it and the story doesn't stack up.)

What does the GLP have to do with it? They're organising an open letter in his support, claiming that there is nothing to see here except that he's a victim of vile racism.

Support for a left wing cause that bears no relationship to the facts? Where have I heard that before?

Perhaps he's using 'friend' in the sense that lawyers do - the way barristers refer to each other as 'm'learned friend' even though they may not have met before.

"I am loathe to add yet more words to the teetering mountain of commentary about the tragedy of Jason Arday but I find it worrying that we now have two clear examples of the Good Law Project weaponizing individuals who appear to be a good fit for both its own ideological and fund raising objectives, but with little or no thought as to whether that person is psychologically robust enough to engage."

Some more thoughts on freedom of speech

Those who crusade on behalf of individuals, to promote an ideology or increase fund raising, must owe some duty of care to their psychological well being.

You're probably already aware, but Weddell as mentioned in that aka Sophie Molly aka Sophie Sparkles aka pot noodle is part of a polycule with the trans activist that was questioned after gloating about Ann Widdecombe being tortured.

One member has left and was spilling the beans on life Chez Sparkles, including that Soph reeks of pot noodle. There's also some sort of criminal trial that the ex member is involved in possibly against one of the polycule. There is a thread.

I apologise in advance

Polycule falls apart | Mumsnet

I expect people remember that Heather Herbert (charged in relation to social media comments he made after Ann Widdecombe's death) is in a polycule wit...

The Global Story podcast on BBC Sounds has covered the Jason Arday story. No mention of the GLP, but Branwen Jeffreys provides a fair summary, and there is a good interview with Tyler Austin Harper, of the Atlantic, who talks about the issues with DEI initiatives in the US, and his experience of being the token black professor.

The comments on that Instagram post are full in attack mode on Trevor Philips who wrote the article Maugham singled out. Celeb flowers including Trisha Goddard and Mark Bonnar

If possible, could someone post some screenshots for those of us who aren't on Instagram? Thanks.

His next post on Instagram is bewailing marina Hyde being snarky about Harry and Meghan. Lad knows his audience.

What has Trevor Phillips/the Times been accused of?

Lalgarh · 22/08/2026 15:53

Being a sellout and doing the bidding of Whitey, amongst other things.

It's quite something that he can get so many black followers to attack assorted black journalists as such.

DrudgeJedd · 22/08/2026 17:17

Since Jolyon nuked his X & Bluesky accounts he's mostly using insta & I think all of the ❤️ have gone to his head a bit. He's turned into some sort of guru...

Maugham is awfully free in his condemnation of black and brown people that he feels don't fit into their socially/ideologically stipulated mould, isn't he?

I thought Maugham was (recently) all in on listening to black people and having white people shut up 🤔 Seems this only applies if he approves of the politics of the black people who are speaking. Otherwise he's really quite happy to paint a target on black people he dislikes and send his followers out to insult them.

He really could cause an argument in an empty room.

Lalgarh · 22/08/2026 18:34

By the way, is he still a practising tax lawyer? I thought he'd done some work for Gary Barlow to reduce his liabilities.

From the celeb outrage farming on that insta (Alison Hammond, Trisha Goddard, Annie Lennox, Elizabeth Berrington and Mark Bonnar) I imagine it's a brilliant way to sign up new clients.

And maybe that story about how JM had managed to spike that story Harry Cole mentioned, it suggests he can pull in favours from possible clients...?

I’m reading my way through this and thought I’d post it on the thread as GLP gets discussed:

He's only in on black people that he agrees with speaking up. And from his performance at the vigil, he's not all that keen on white people (at least, HIM) shutting up, either.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought that Unherd piece was a lot of words, many of them long ones, that suffered from the same fault as those he criticised. The 'woke Left' is a pretty easy target, and rightly so. But there's no analysis here, just an overview of where are, written in the same turgid style.

I think the more we distinguish between the traditional, democratically-minded, more conservative Left (that relied on analysis of material reality) and the postmodern, (boundary-detesting & reality-denying) authoritarian Left the better.

People need to be reminded that it is possible to be Lefty and be reasonable.

moto748e · 23/08/2026 01:14

It's funny you describe them as 'conservative', @UtopiaPlanitia , but I know what you mean. The shame is that next to no-one in the Labour Party is prepared to stand up and say so.

When I use the term ‘conservative’ to describe them, I’m thinking Glassman/Blue Labour. To me, that older section of the Left have a more Chesterton’s Fence attitude to social and political change rather than a desire for total revolution.

I hope that description makes sense to people other than myself 😁

I was going to say he'll be too busy attending this event...
but since I took this screenshot yesterday it's been scrubbed from his & the venues socials. Maybe he had a flash of self awareness & realised how ridiculous this made him look

Hmm that screenshot/ poster says GLP hosted Ardays resignation letter.

Were GLP organising it?

Also if you sign up to a charitable organisation that's now based in jersey, are they still covered by GDPR protection

SqueakyDinosaur · 23/08/2026 12:51

It's not a charity. It's a not for profit company, or it was till it moved to Jersey - I don't know if that changes its status.
