Should cosmetic surgery to 'affirm' someones gender identity be banned?
So things like males getting silicone implants (not including males requiring that after breast cancer.) Just silicone implants to give them a female shape. Males having having their sex organs removed-being made infertile. Mastectomies for females and the very risky phaloplasty....with hideous infection rates after the op. Again this operation renders them infertile...
This is not health care-this is harming otherwise healthy bodies....if we ban tongue splitting why not ban these types of operations as well?

I imagine the patients concerned have psychiatric reports insisting that the surgery is essential to their mental wellbeing.

Again using the example of an anorexic patient, "insisting" on 'fat reduction' surgery, with or without a psychiatrist's approval, would not be in their best interest, and it seems unlikely surgeons would risk it.

No, not if they are self funding

But I would have significant qualms about 'bottom surgery' of both kinds. They seem fraught with complications and I can't see how it's ethical to perform surgeries with such high risk of problems for little actual gain (re health).

We are talking about labia minora reduction surgery. I don't think this has any accepted major ill effects. I am prepared to be corrected if I am wrong.

Edit: the main ill effect is to consume NHS resources I suppose.

mutilating healthy organs because of mental issues is insane in my opinion... amputating other essential body parts is seen as crazy for other reasons, but the moment it's about a transgender identity it's okay... rainbow sparkle brain rot.

caringcarer · 04/06/2026 01:19

I don't care if they want to mutilate their bodies but they should not get it done on NHS. They should pay themselves.

TempestTost · 04/06/2026 01:28

I think a lot of cosmetic surgery doesn't meet the basic requirements to be acceptable medical treatment. And therefore doctors shouldn't be allowed to do them.

LoftyCoralBird · 04/06/2026 01:40

If people are willing to pay for their aesthetic changes and fully know and understand the health risks involved, then I think it’s their decision to make. With some potentially complex procedures counselling would be beneficial and a waiting period to avoid rush decisions about having life changing surgery.

Agree, but even if a man does mutilate his genitalia to emulate that of a female, he is still 100% male and must never cross female boundaries. Any surgeon who does this mutilation surgery should be struck off. It is inhumane imo to pretend to a man that the surgery will make him into a woman.
