Ideas please to get a response from John Lewis to my complaint.

Nevershoppingagaininjohnlewis · 11/04/2026 09:02

In January, I was horrified to discover at the end of a bra fitting that John Lewis now have unisex changing rooms.

I complained at the time. They took a month to reply to my complaint, and even then JLs response didn't address what I'd raised.

I escalated my complaint mid March. Still no response as of today.

Any suggestions as to what to do next?

I'm thinking a daily X/insta reminder that they haven't replied? However, when I did that for the initial complaint, I was ignored or had a "we've passed your concerns onto the store involved".

The only other think I could think of was an actual letter sent via recorded delivery.

What would you do? This has bothered me too much to let it drop.

@MissGenderingthat poster is fake.

In their previous post @MissGendering said "My approach would be a poster campaign. Hold on."

So I think @MissGendering created that poster as a suggestion.

It would be a jolly good idea. It would certainly have me turning on my heel and walking out of every shop that displayed it.

Because they've got unisex changing rooms, silly. it doesn't matter that most of the people who'd be out of work are women, it's their fault for having the wrong job. That's how feminism works.

Coincidentally, I went to the big John Lewis at Bluewater last weekend. It was rammed. I don't think it's going bust any time soon, though I'm sure a boycott by literally dozens of 'GC' types will put a big dent in its balance sheet.

Btw, the Supreme Court decision blatantly doesn't outlaw mixed-sex fitting rooms. From a legal standpoint this is so, so basic. Posters repeatedly 'misunderstanding' it as some kind of catch-all anti-trans law achieves precisely nothing.

We are not "anti-trans", we are "pro-women". Do you understand nothing?

HolidayPlanningAgain · 12/04/2026 11:12

I used to answer complaints and to be honest the response you would’ve received from my company would’ve be
“sorry you felt uncomfortable, but we only provide multi use changing rooms”
it is not down to a shop to pander to everyone’s preferences, plus JL isn’t the best place to go for a bra fitting you should go to a specialist lingerie shop.

what’s pro-women about trying to shut down a business that employs mainly women?

because they have unisex changing rooms?

srsly?

abathofmilkwithladydi · 12/04/2026 11:22

@AStonedRosequite. I like being able to pay my mortgage and feed my children.

SwirlyGates · 12/04/2026 11:27

@AStonedRose my comment did not relate to the attempt to shut down JL, but to your sentence, "Posters repeatedly 'misunderstanding' it [the Supreme Court judgement] as some kind of catch-all anti-trans law achieves precisely nothing."

The use of "anti-trans" tells us all we need to know about you. Again, do you understand nothing?

I understand perfectly. Cheers.

are you happy for people to boycott JL, potentially leading to women losing their livelihoods, because they have unisex fitting rooms?

No, mixed sex changing is not outlawed.

What they did say is that if you only provide mixed sex, it could be indirect discrimination towards women.

It doesnt doesn't take a genius to work out that it's absolutely discriminatory towards women and girls, especially if they're trying on underwear.

it's not women who have started a porn genre having orgasms in men's changing rooms, is it?

Individuals are free to boycott whichever company they want, for whatever reason they want. If JL went under, plenty of men would lose their jobs too, and of course they are the ones earning more money.

Women have no obligation to support a business because it employs mainly women. Women customers support businesses that meet their needs.

Chersfrozenface · 12/04/2026 11:54

Anyway, all JL has to do is have three changing rooms - women only, men only and mixed sex. And by women and men I mean as defined by the Supreme Court.

Yes.

I don't shop there any more. For practical reasons and ideological ones.

Rightsraptor · 12/04/2026 12:10

It would be lawful under the EQA 2010 to have female-only lingerie fitting rooms. It's perfectly understandable to those of us with any experience of our world, plus some common sense, that girls & women do not want males a few inches away from them when having a bra fitting or whatever. This should not come as a surprise to anyone.

If JL and others don't offer this, I suspect it's an economic decision - clustering the changing rooms in more awkward corners of the shop floor might allow for more efficient use of floor space for sales. Lord knows they need it.

So - if they can make an economic decision, so can I. But if I'm wrong and it's a political decision, then ditto. So can I.

I used the bra fitting service in JL for my young teen daughter today. Women and Men’s clothes are on different floors. So no men in changing room. My DD was too embarrassed to even carry the bras past the men sitting outside waiting for their wives, so I was charged with that.

we were then helped by the most lovely young woman who was so good with my daughter. JL at its best.

So glad it was a positive experience today. This stuff does really make a difference and it seems mad that we have to fight to protect such spaces.

As the mother of a daughter, this is why it has irked me so much. Had what happened to her happened to me when I took her for one of her early fittings, she'd never gone again.

The man in my changing room was there with his wife. Wife wanted husband opinion on something. So he was in the communal area waiting for her to pull back the curtain.

Why he couldn't have waited outside, I don't know.

Unisex changing rooms are not illegal. You cannot make them reply either. If you want a public debate on whether shops should have single sex changing rooms I suggest writing to one of the more reactionary media outlets.

The irony is that one of the reasons our local M&S switched to unisex was mothers complaining about not being allowed to bring boys over 8 into the female changing rooms and vice versa. (Same issues with swimming pools) you change rules to help one group and another complains. At our John Lewis there are changing rooms on each floor and men’s clothing is with the electrical goods, ladies has a whole floor and children’s wear is with lingerie

InSlovakiaTheCapitalOfCourseIsBratislava · 12/04/2026 13:29

The John Lewis I went to last week for my bra fitting had the changing room on the floor with all the other women’s wear. Menswear was on another floor. No idea if the changing rooms were officially unisex or not though there would no compelling reason for a man to use that one (but each cubicle was self contained -solid partitions and a floorlength curtain).

Littlemisscat · 12/04/2026 13:40

Contact customer services and ask for your complaint to be escalated to a manager and also ask for CEO office contact. JLP have moved their customer service overseas ( predominantly South Africa) and Waitrose will be the same from summer!

My changing room was next to the lingerie. I (wrongly) presumed it was women only, as that's where my bra fitting was booked to take place.

I was wrong to have assumed.

Happy to respond to the question, as I wish more people knew what is being taken away in the name of inclusivity.

The bra fitting all took place behind a loose fitting curtain. The man was the other side of the curtain.

JL said they can't do bra fittings behind locked doors for the safety of their partners conducting the fitting. I completely understand that.

However, there is no other space in the store where the fitting could have taken place behind a curtain in a female only space.

There were no signs in the changing room or store indicating the changing rooms were unisex.

I would have cancelled the fitting if I'd known what was expected. And I'm a confident middle aged woman.

Which branch is this if you don't mind my asking? My local JL still has cubicles with doors, and the bra fitting section is on the other side of the women's clothing department - also with doors.

InSlovakiaTheCapitalOfCourseIsBratislava · 12/04/2026 21:20

Was he using the changing room? You also get dads who have to take their daughters bra shopping
You do also get men asked for opinions on clothes or having to be gophers
I imagine it’s like leisure centres - it’s unisex if there are cubicles. Single sex when it’s communal . No one sees anyone else if it’s cubicles, and it’s getting close to freaking about how under our clothes we’re all naked .

Surely dads don't go in the changing rooms when their daughters are trying on bras? It's bad enough going in with your mum; every teenager I've ever known would be mortified by going in with their dad.

As for opinions, or fetching clothes, it's normal (or used to be) for the women to come out of the changing room to ask the waiting man for an opinion, or to fetch clothes, not for the men to hang around inside the changing room.

its derelict uncaring and cruel to exclude males from single sex spaces. HOw dare a shop consider the needs and wants of young girls in such a way

Don’t worry - the last couple of times I’ve been in JL (different towns) they’ve been dead. Only the dumb dog walkers letting their dogs snuffle in all the clothes. They’ll go out of business soon.

Previously I would have agreed with you , but they’ve just paid their partners an annual bonus for the first time since pre covid so appears the tide maybe turning
