Trailer for new Harry Potter series

The trailer for the new Harry Potter series has been released. In its write up, the Guardian of course had to have a dig about JK Rowling's "anti-transgender views" 🙄

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2026/mar/25/harry-potter-tv-series-trailer

It got me thinking, this series will run for about ten years, and I wonder if the perception of JKR will have shifted by the end. Will people (including so called journalists) be able to discuss the substance of what she has said, rather than just shouting "Bigot!", "Transphobe!" etc.

There was an interview with Paapa Essiedu in the Times recently, where he said he hasn't spoken to JKR, he doesn't regret signing the letter condemning the Supreme Court ruling and would do it again.

He said "“My points of view are mine and will continue to be so. I signed that letter because I believe that artists in the trans community have a right to be treated with dignity and should be able to work without being intimidated. I have been really supported by the production team and I’d sign that letter again today.”

If he actually spoke to JKR, he might be surprised to find that she would agree with him that people should be treated with dignity in the workplace and shouldn't be intimidated. I think it goes to show that he, like others, doesn't have a very good understanding of what this is about at all. Doesn't stop them sticking the boot into JKR though...

First trailer for Harry Potter TV series reveals much-anticipated new take

First real look at HBO’s big-budget small screen take on JK Rowling’s best-selling books also reveals that first season will premiere this Christmas

I like the comment from HBO’s chief content officer: 'if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.' JKR makes mincemeat of people on Twitter and I suspect HBO’s chief content officer very much knows that. Grin

I've always loved the Harry Potter series, and have read all the books as they came out and seen all the films in "real time" as I'm old 😁
Just watched the trailer, and it looks good.
Might give it a watch.

It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them,” he said. “Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything
I agree with this, and always prefer to separate the art from the artist. If we "cancelled" every book/play/film/songs because we disagreed with the artist behind them, there'd be nothing left to enjoy!

Haha, I liked that too.

I love JK now as a supporter of women's rights, and I've always loved HP as a work of fiction.

I'm very excited about the series, especially having seen the teaser trailer. The casting all looks very good, and the atmosphere and aesthetic seem spot on. I'm particularly excited about getting all the things in the books that were cut from the films. Ron and Hermione in particular were both mischaracterised to some extent, with Ron reduced to mere comic relief, and Hermione becoming a bit of a Mary Sue and losing the flaws that made her such a relatable character. So I hope they're more faithful to the books!

I do disagree with pp regarding separating the art from the artist, just for myself personally. At least when it comes to the creator of a thing, as opposed to those merely involved in it. I think the creator puts part of themselves into the work they create, and that's usually at least subtly evident.

Of course, people are nuanced so contain both good and bad, but for the most part, I find that once I know a person who created something did things I find deeply morally offensive, or holds beliefs I find abhorrent, it taints the work for me, and I can't enjoy it whether I want to or not.

Luckily, as I said, I think JK is great!

MassiveWordSalad · 26/03/2026 12:44

Meanwhile a reminder about JKR’s position about those actors working in the series who disagree with her.

“I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did. I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.”

See, it’s not that hard to be a grown-up. I suspect some of hand-wringing letter-signers working on Harry Potter will feel a bit silly in a few years’ time.

Trigger who? I doubt anyone here will be bothered about being called names because we understand that words are not violence.

And you’re the one who appears to be triggered, simply by the release of a Harry Potter trailer.

Generallychill · 26/03/2026 16:51

I absolutely love Harry Potter, the books more than the movies and I am looking forward to watching the series when it comes out.
I do think the casting of Snape isn't the best not because of the colour of his skin, just because he's too handsome to be true to the writing.(Love the meme of him as the missing Laurent from Twilight though)
I do wish people would actually read the articles about women's rights that JK has put out there and not just go off viral click bate posts about how shes just anti trans.

Secretsquirrelshh · 26/03/2026 17:11

My family were lucky enough to film as extras for this over the summer (just one day, not Hogwarts-based). The production team were amazing and I would be surprised if it isn't a huge success, based on the attention to detail shown throughout.

A sniffy neighbour, who is a consultant at the NHS, said she'd never allow her children to do something like that (filming work on HP) because JKR's views are abhorrent. Still, my kids got some pocket money, a day off school and a day they'll remember forever.

JKR is a legend. It's rare to have heroes as an adult, but here we are.

The Guardian though has has become truly terrible on this score. Their moral didacticism makes it practically impossible for them to write a review without grading the work on its moral relevance. Some of their reviews read as satire, as though they've written up the sensitivity reader's notes. It's ghastly.

Did you ask your consultant neighbour what were JKR’s views she found abhorrent?

Violetparis · 26/03/2026 17:35

It looks great, I hope it earns JKR millions.

She'd gatecrashed a BBQ she wasn't invited to with her whole family, and drank all my Pimms, so I was already seething whilst trying to be a generous host. It didn't seem the time to pick a fight. I did suggest that maybe the NHS could learn a few lessons from the Sandie Peggie ruling (this was earlier in the same week).

Quite right. Just a pity he doesn’t extend the same consideration re dignity and intimidation towards women. Hmm

Scottsy200 · 26/03/2026 18:12

People who constantly call others transphobia and homophobes and TURFs opinions never change, you can’t reason with most of them.

As a woman, an actual woman not a CIS woman because I don’t need an extra word to describe what I am just because others have decided I need one - I stand with JKR, womens rights are in danger of being trampled by men who pretend to be women, fact that some people want to call breast feeding chest feeding, oh and some of these delusional people say they can actually menstrate FFS, soon you won’t even be able to use the word Mummy incase you offend someone 🤦🏽‍♀️

I know, right? If I'm 'triggered' by anything in that post, it's the use of f instead of fuck.

For fuck's sake, just write fuck. Even worse is fucking asterisks.

ThreeplusI · 26/03/2026 18:57

I don't think JKR is actually Transphobic, she's just got the gjmptipn and means to put her head above the parapet to fight to retain her rights. The Women who wouldn't Wheest.
This is a fascinating read,
