Starring Emma non-binary Corrin, and Olivia literally a gay man Colman.

"Author and memoirist Dolly Alderton’s adaptation of the classic novel is treading this same ground by offering a new social commentary: this time on gender. In Alderton’s Pride and Prejudice, Emma Corrin is the first non-binary actor to play the iconic Elizabeth Bennet.

"The casting is a brilliant move that reflects the society we live in today, where people are free and open about not only their sexualities but their gender representation too. To see Corrin play this role will surely be celebrated by the LGBTQIA+ community."

Emma Corrin, the visibly female actor.

I expect the casting process was for a 'female presenting actor". Like the one for Beetlejuice in the West End. https://www.westendtheatre.com/332033/news/beetlejuice-in-the-west-end-to-hold-open-auditions/

MagpiePi · 01/03/2026 19:32

A woman playing a woman wearing clothing typical for women of the period…
I can see how that is a truly groundbreaking celebration of the alphabet community 🙄

UpAndDownAllTheTime · 01/03/2026 19:33

The character of Lizzie Bennet is literally rooted in the fact that she's a woman 🙄

TheKeatingFive · 01/03/2026 19:34

I can only imagine how little time Jane Austen would have had for all this bullshit. Her eyes would have rolled so far they would have departed her head.

"no taller than 5' 4"' - surely both heightist and anti-trans-identifying men?

I’m always amazed that people get paid to write utter bollocks like that Mirror article.

What three words?

How are the characters going to be presented as non-binary?

Perhaps Lizzie will suddenly announce she's not a woman and therefore the entail wouldn't apply to her so she'd be able to inherit.

Oh the comment randomly calling me a “stupid bitch” has been deleted. Maybe it was the “journalist”.

About the same level of cutting, incisiveness. Surely a shoo-in for next year's Nobel.

While I don't want you or any other woman to experience slurs, there's a part of me that wishes MN would let those stand - to showcase the utter vileness of the people who oppose women talking about feminism in an anonymous forum. A lot of people I know who aren't connected to extreme TRAs really don't think these people are as awful as they are.

BaronessBomburst · 01/03/2026 20:16

Wow! So Emma is going to be playing the role of a woman. Challenging. That's going to take some serious acting ability.

Thesnailonthewhale · 01/03/2026 20:18

In shocking news ,a woman portrays a woman in a film about pushing back at society about what is expected of women..

Isn't it a bit weird that this character is being used as part of the trans narrative, When trans narrative reinforces negative stereotypes... :/

I would actually love that. What better way to highlight the utter triteness of "gender identy" in the context of women's actual history.

What else can we rewrite?

Lizzie Bennett identifies as a man and inherits. The End.

Tess of the D'Ubervilles tells her rapist she's actually a man so he doesn't rape her after all. The End.

Anne Boleyn transes the infant Elizabeth. Henry and Anne live to a happy old age together. The End.

God asks Adam who told him to take the apple. God says "the woman told me Oh Lord". Eve says "Wasn't me mate, I'm a bloke". Eve gets to stay in Eden. The End.

Bluebootsgreenboots · 01/03/2026 20:28

FFS. Surely the whole premise of the story is that the Bennett girls were all girls, so unable to inherit their father’s estate and therefore are entirely reliant on the marriage market. And without their honour they are worthless. Contrast Miss D’Arcy, Lydia and Wickham.
Anyway, when the production company has lost ££££ on this, the others will abandon this work pretence.

Waitwhat23 · 01/03/2026 20:38

The Anne of Green Gables books would have had somewhat of a different feel if Anne had arrived and declared 'but I am a boy!'.

If Jane Eyre had not had to become a despised governess because she identified as a boy.

All those first born Royal daughters, married off in dynastic arrangements and used as political currency, while their younger brothers became King.

TempestTost · 01/03/2026 20:45

I have a hard time imagining in what way it could be even a version of Pride & Prejudice if Elizabeth is not a woman. It seems like it would be a different story altogether?

Maybe I will be surprised.

borntobequiet · 01/03/2026 20:45

I suppose Jane Austen herself could have identified as a boy and joined the Navy like her brothers instead of being stuck at home writing novels.

Boring old reality prevailed.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 01/03/2026 20:53

ah the endless pandering to the deeply tedious massively privileged Emma corrin goes on - I do not understand why they is so feted for - checks notes - playing a woman when they is in fact a woman

SirChenjins · 01/03/2026 20:59

Do these people actually think that the rest of us buy into their tedious BS? Hold the front page - women play female characters!!! It's the future, I tell you.

🙄🥱

I’m not giving that clicks, however I’m wondering who ‘literally a gay man’ Olivia is playing? She could be Mrs Bennet. Or the awful Lady Catherine de Burgh. She certainly won’t be Mr Collins or Mr Bennet I don’t suppose.

I don’t request a delete anymore, unless it’s something particularly unpleasant. If it’s bog standard abuse I tend to leave it for the record.

MagpiePi · 01/03/2026 21:29

I don’t really understand why this production is considered to be
“….offering a new social commentary: this time on gender…” just because “The casting is a brilliant move that reflects the society we live in today, where people are free and open about not only their sexualities but their gender representation too…”

Is Emma Corrin going to keep breaking the fourth wall and saying ‘I’m non-binary, you know’ or are the rest of the cast going to be adding ‘…played by Emma Corrin who is actually non-binary’ every time they mention Lizzie Bennett?
