Starring Emma non-binary Corrin, and Olivia literally a gay man Colman.

"Author and memoirist Dolly Alderton’s adaptation of the classic novel is treading this same ground by offering a new social commentary: this time on gender. In Alderton’s Pride and Prejudice, Emma Corrin is the first non-binary actor to play the iconic Elizabeth Bennet.

"The casting is a brilliant move that reflects the society we live in today, where people are free and open about not only their sexualities but their gender representation too. To see Corrin play this role will surely be celebrated by the LGBTQIA+ community."

Jeez it’s so tedious all these remakes and re workings for modern audiences “let’s take the title for all we can get from the recognition factor and remake it as stupidly as possible”

The 2020’s creative outlook seems utterly incapable and vacuous.

For a start the premise seems to be modern audiences are totally unable to cope if the past doesn’t have the same social mores of today

All part of the on-going attempt to re-write history too show the alphabetties have been here 'since forever'.

tobee · 01/03/2026 21:47

Also I wish journalists would stop using the term “beloved” about everyone. Using it about Austen when you also use it about some actor who was in Eastenders for 5 minutes 20 years ago somewhat devalues the term.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single gay / queer / non-binary* man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a non-binary / gay / queer wife.

Hm, doesn’t work, does it?

edited to remove bold but I can’t

The use of 'we' in their poorly spelled, abusive posts makes me think it's a return of the stupid little cabal from a while ago who were group replying to posts while pretending to be a solo poster and slipped up.

While I don't want you or any other woman to experience slurs, there's a part of me that wishes MN would let those stand - to showcase the utter vileness of the people who oppose women talking about feminism in an anonymous forum. A lot of people I know who aren't connected to extreme TRAs really don't think these people are as awful as they are.

Likewise.
Let them show themselves for what they are.

Beamur · 01/03/2026 22:13

Lizzie Bennett identifies as a man and inherits. The End. Yep. If only. The Dashwoods and about most of the women in every JE novel would have had dramatically different outcomes if that had been an option for them. Instead of marriages of convenience or inevitable poverty/dependence on male relatives.
Saying that, Emma Corrin is a great actor and I reckon will be fantastic as Lizzie Bennett.
But I wonder if they ever get fed up of being hyped up as a non binary role model.
There is an irony in that sex, not gender is at the heart of Austen's writing. Your sex determines your life and prospects.

It peaked (in terms of originality) at Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and it's been downhill since.

Think you might have something there. Goady post on feminist chat 😄

The stunning and brave Emma Corrin who whined about being subjected to transphobia when she dated the male actor Rami Malek?

We really don’t need yet another remake of P&P and scattering magic non-binary fairy dust on the casting decisions doesn’t make it any different from previous versions. Now maybe if they’d got Eddie Izzard to play Mrs B…🤣

Bluemin · 01/03/2026 22:48

Eddie Izzard could play both Mrs B AND Mr B depending on which "mode" he woke up in.

He did a play where he played every character didn’t he? Maybe he could play everyone.

Izzard would be brilliant as both, and more, like Kind Hearts and Coronets.

Yes and with Olivia Coleman as Mr. Collins. I can totally see that 😂

I quite liked Bride and Prejudice.

But I do think that re-imaginings are getting a little stale at the moment. I went to see & Juliet a few days ago and while the cast and crew were competent and enthusiastic, I had a hard time drumming up any enthusiasm for what was I think supposed to be a bit cheeky, and instead seemed silly or even reductive.

YiddlySquat · 01/03/2026 23:15

Why the fuck is Lizzie Bennett sitting on a roof in the trailer?! Do these producers think that their audience is so dim we can’t cope with a woman being an accurate portrayal of women in the early 19th century? Lizzie never did anything to disgrace or embarrass anyone, she knew the risks of getting known as a flighty, insensible woman.

I hate that Netflix has to make these woke rehashes. I also like historically accurate casting, so sue me.

i think what they did with Persuasion was criminal (Anne Elliot walking around with a fucking rabbit in her hands, please!) and they also butchered one of the most moving parts of the book:

Extract from Persuasion - There could have never been two hearts so open, no tastes so similar, no feelings so in unison, no countenances so beloved. Now they were as strangers; nay, worse than strangers, for they could never become acquainted. It was a perpetual estrangement.

Dakota Johnson - “We’re worse than strangers, we’re exes”

🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼

True Austen fans don’t want this. Any of it.

As for a non-binary person playing the lead role of Lizzie. Mrs Bennett is so utterly obsessed with her 5 DDs being married off because everyone knew what would happen if Mr Bennet died - they’d be destitute, penniless and homeless. Much like the Dashwood sisters ended up (and actually Austen herself). Their whole life, their home and position in life would be torn away from them overnight - precisely because they were all BORN FEMALE. Not because the identified as female

But hey maybe whatsherface, Emma thingy -who I have to say is the most bland actress I’ve ever clapped eyes on, is she a nepo baby? - thinks Jane Bennett should have just identified as a man, problem solved, they’d never have to worry about Mr Collins taking their home 🙄

I’m not giving that clicks, however I’m wondering who ‘literally a gay man’ Olivia is playing? She could be Mrs Bennet. Or the awful Lady Catherine de Burgh. She certainly won’t be Mr Collins or Mr Bennet I don’t suppose.

She’ll be playing the part of Olivia Coleman like in everything else she’s in 😂
