Men in women's prisons - Scotland

I didn't realise here were still men being housed in women's prisons in Scotland. Three murderers. Clip from Scottish parliament of Douglas Ross questioning first minster John Swinney, who won't say if they are male or female.

Yes and even violent sex offenders can be placed in women's prisons as long as they dont pose an unacceptable risk, but they wont say what they class as a reasonable risk of harm to women. This is the policy that FWS are taking the Scottish government back to crt over and the Scottish government is trying to say the sc ruling is incompatible with transwomens human rights.

WearyAuldWumman · 15/01/2026 22:59

I seem to recall that Peter Laing/Paris Green from Glenrothes has oscillated between the men and women's estates.

Edited to add news report link.

What on earth is in this for Swinney?

Lord knows. Trying to get the Greens back on board?

INeedAPensieve · 16/01/2026 08:11

Another day, another reason that I'm ashamed of our Scottish politicians. I cringe now that I used to vote for the SNP.

Thanks @Igneococcus I managed to read this article without the paywall. Probably unwise at this time in the morning as I'm now fizzing! Wtf is wrong with John Swinney and his party???? Kudos at least to the brave backbencher. She'll be getting bullied now behind the scenes by all the activists in the SNP sadly.

Yes, respect for Ruth Maguire. I hope she is angry enough to not care about any bullying.
Kemi B says in the article about her meeting Sandie Peggie that she has more trust in FWR than the Scottish government and I fully agree with her and wish we could have a government consisting of FWR, Murray Blackburn Mackenzie, Joanna Cherry could be involved, we can get the reasonable ex-Greens (like Andy Wightman) back, there are others. I'd vote for that.

What on earth is in this for Swinney?

I think somebody somewhere promised the SNP big rewards for pushing this dangerous nonsense through.

ScoldsBridal · 16/01/2026 08:47

Is Ruth Maguire stepping down? Bugger. I sent her an email after her question thanking her for speaking out - but perhaps it was because she knew it wasn’t career sui**de to challenge her Leader? Whatever, it was great to see and hear a female SNP MSP openly defend single sex spaces hot on the heels of John Swinney’s dishonest answers. Thank you Ruth. I hope the SNP get a huge shock at Election time - they’re well past their sell-by date.

I can only speak for myself of course but it would have to be a very very very big reward before I would be prepared to be such a craven idiot in public (or in private).

Yes me too. But many of these are not the brightest sparks (to put it mildly)

He has the look of someone being blackmailed. That is the best explanation I can find.

totalrocket · 16/01/2026 10:11

I’m not so sure there is a covert reward. The SNP peddle this we are morally superior shtick. Morally superior to Westminster and everyone else. It’s unconscious virtue signalling. I think the Scottish political sphere is captured by an obsession of being inclusive and a totalitarian acceptance of the extremist end of the woke spectrum. I wonder if it’s a very small group of people, fresh out of uni who are secretaries for mps, many of who haven’t worked in many non public sector jobs, that promote this way of thinking.

totalrocket · 16/01/2026 10:13

Being a public sector worker in Scotland comes with a certain element of group think.

lifeinthelastlane · 16/01/2026 12:58

That's a massive generalisation!
Wouldnt that include Sandra Peggie?

I’m thinking more the policy making end 🙂

RoamingToaster · 16/01/2026 14:24

Imagine signing up to work in a female prison and then being assaulted by a male prisoner who’s been placed there! Lunacy!

SwirlyGates · 16/01/2026 14:39

Maybe they're trying to bankrupt FWS, to whom they still owe £600k.

Joanne Lamont is lovely. I emailed her once, thanking her for all that she had done to protect women's and girls' rights.

I got a lovely email back from her. I'd mentioned that I was a teacher and she said that her teaching experience was one of the contributing factors to her determination to protect children's rights.

Tabletricia · 16/01/2026 15:47

What’s in it for the greens? What’s in it for the Lib Dem’s? Are they just so thick they cannot think their stance through. Like they thought ‘yay, it helps the trans people’ without having the next thought ‘oh but it chucks women’s long-fought for rights under a bus’. Are they sooooo incomprehensibly stupid that they missed the second part of that thought? If so how on earth did they become politicians ?

It’s unfathomable.
