I couldn’t see a thread here for this.

It’s already at over 30k signatures. Aim is to get it to 100k.

Thanks, I'd forgotten the summing up bits at the end. Still very far from being 'on the hook' though. It makes sense for it to be health ministers on each side, but it could be anyone; and they tend to be astoundingly bland statements of the existing party position - they don't get questioned or have to make their case.

LiffLuffLaff · 12/01/2026 11:21

What you do get is a minister who'll have to show up and explain government thinking on your issue

Don't expect them to have good news for you, however.

There's a reason you've had to fight for the support of 100,000 of your fellow citizens - and get past the Petitions Committee - to get this far. At best, a minister will politely tell you that the government notes your concerns, and then give a justification of current government policy. - [my underlined emphasis]

IMO it’ll be a reckoning on record to put in the bank for the future for these children.

What happens when a petition gets debated in Parliament? - BBC News

Petitions can be debated in Westminster Hall once they reach 100,000 signatures - but what happens next?

This is a good procedural guide. I’d like to attend the debate if possible.

I do hope Rosie Duffield will lead on it.

As it will be debated, as many believers in biology as possible should apply to attend

lanadelgrey · 12/01/2026 13:35

Can we continue to encourage the petition to be signed although it is now over 100k. The bigger the better to help demonstrate support for a ban

Iamnotalemming · 12/01/2026 14:01

I signed last night, as did DH, who is now well on the peaking journey.

I am currently reading Time to Think. I am so very sad and angry at how many opportunities to improve the service at GIDS were lost and that rather than prioritising a research piece on those children who have already been through this experimental treatment, the government wants to just go ahead and experiment on some more.

Given this government's now established history of U-turns I sincerely hope this is not the policy hill they decide to die on. It would be unforgiveable and history would not judge them kindly.

Flagging this thread as probably of interest to many on here:

110,724 signatures

Still increasing steadily.

RedToothBrush · 12/01/2026 16:05

Regardless of the response, it's fucking embarrassing for government and it's unwanted publicity.

MarjorieWestriding · 12/01/2026 16:19

Good, it serves them right. Not that they'll probably learn anything, though.

F1rstDoNoHarm · 12/01/2026 19:21

Hopefully the petition will generate enough publicity so that finding parents who will subject their child to this experiment becomes really hard. I'm not sure if children in care can take part in this trial - I hope not!

NotAtMyAge · 12/01/2026 21:47

This is now the eighth most popular petition on the petitions site after only 4 days. We really do need to keep sharing the link.

Wes Streeting faces fresh demand to stop puberty blocker trial as petition hits 100k
A petition calling for the study to be halted has gathered more than 100,000 signatures.
Professor Karol Sikora, a consultant oncologist, said it was "good to see this petition doing well".

He added: "I've spent over half a century in medicine and I certainly do not approve of using puberty blocking medicine on healthy young children. It is dangerous and wrong."

The DHRC’s statement says:

“This trial will help provide the evidence that is currently lacking. Its approval came only after extremely rigorous safety checks and with multiple safeguards in place to protect young people's wellbeing - including clinical and parental approval."

But as we know, clinicians working in this area tend to be believers, and parents are desperate. It gives me no confidence at all.

This is excellent. From Women's Rights Network:

Join Heather Binning who hosts this week’s special guests Louise Irvine, co-chair of the Clinical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender and Terry Patterson from Thoughtful Therapists. Louise and Terry explain why there are enormous concerns from sector experts regarding the ethical grounds and outcomes competence of the UK puberty blockers trial called ‘Pathway’, a medical trial which will involve around 220 children under the age of 16. We hear explanation of the scrutiny stages that UK clinical trials must successfully pass through in order to be granted approval, as well as questioning how this safety net has failed

borntobequiet · 13/01/2026 10:06

I wish I’d seen that before a conversation with friends yesterday where they were sure that because the trial had obtained ethical approval it was bound to be both rigorous and useful. I could have made much better points.

F1rstDoNoHarm · 13/01/2026 11:49

Too much grey on the map but I've been able to turn my constituency yellow Grin

ContentedAlpaca · 13/01/2026 16:13

Nice to see someone already beat me to it in my little town.

NotAtMyAge · 13/01/2026 17:03

Pleased to see my large rural Welsh constituency was already pale yellow before my vote.
