Previous thread:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5457910-the-bluestocking-next-stop-christmas

As the patrons, and gerbils, of The Bluestocking Pub sleep off their Christmas Day food and alcohol intake the capybaras will be getting paid double time to move the pub and contents to the new thread overnight.

All welcome, as long as you are a woman. The men have their own pub The Staunch Ally. It's just down the road, then turn left at the bridge.

You don't have to be mad to drink here but it most definitely helps.

Leave the real world behind and join us in the mayhem and surreal life of a pub staffed by gerbils. Where the food is always exactly what you ordered and the drinks don't give you a hangover the next day!

My curtain over the North-facing door has its own pole and curtain rings. It's a brightly coloured M&S king-sized sheet folded round a single duvet. Makes a huge difference.

Some time this year I will inherit my mother's money (which sounds awful, but - you know) and I am hoping there will be enough to upgrade the insulation in this old house.

Magpiecomplex · 04/01/2026 17:17

@Swashbuckled can you post a picture or a diagram? There must be a solution!

MarieDeGournay · 04/01/2026 18:06

Just imagine if this was real life and we all lived near the Bluey and therefore near each other - there's be a crowd outside your door, Swash, each carrying a length of fabric and a selection of hinged rods, bamboo canes, curtain poles, rings with grippers, hooks, etc. and jostling to be the first through the door to prove the efficacy of their solution.
You could sit behind a table, raising card with numbers from 1-10 rating each of our ideas, and eliminating the lowest scoring idea each time. Eventually you'd pick the best one, and it would be curtains for everybody else😁

Oh dear, I've got so emotionally invested in this that I was very tempted to reply:
'There is. Mine.'😀

Time to go and do something else, I think like cooking my tea. As in dinner.

What makes you think we could get past the gerbils and capybaras? Although the curtain on the outside of the door might be an innovation too far.

And all in Swashbuckling uniform! 😁

This is the door, Magpie.

I have added transparent weather strips around the edges. And also added the letterbox flap. Both have helped.

I think I'd go for curtain hooks and wire (or a pole) across the top frame, and just accept it wouldn't do a very good job when you're out. I've had a set up like that in the past, and as long as you're careful when going out, the curtain won't get trapped in the door. Might be worth putting some curtain weights on the bottom of it to help.

Swashbuckled · 04/01/2026 18:51

Thanks, Magpie. I agree about fixing something to the top frame. I’ll continue to think about putting the curtain pole there; I like using things that are just lying around. ☺️

Swashbuckled · 04/01/2026 18:53

Although you might be right; wire would keep the curtain snug to the door whereas the pile would keep it some distance away due to the brackets.

Right, I’m not thinking about this anymore tonight. It’s a minefield 🤣

Curtain wire threaded through the top of a curtain right at the top.

If you are going out you could probably manage to partially close it and going in you'll push the curtain out of the way with the door enough to get your hands round to shimmy it over.

Or leave it pulled open when out. You'd lose all the warm air opening the door anyway.

Day 4 of a beetle getting a shower.

Bah! I may still chicken out if the bathroom is freezing!

But think how lovely it'll be to get both warm and clean at the same time!

Swashbuckled · 04/01/2026 19:03

Thanks @Boiledbeetle

Just googled and it’s only £3.99 for 3 metres of wire, 4 hooks and 4 eyes.

Cheap as chips!

Warm your bed before your shower so you can dive straight in to warm up. Electric blanket or hot water bottle….

Admittedly the shower was the warmest thing in the house!

And I smell nice!

Or an electric duvet. If I can just find where I've put it I think it's cold enough that even I won't boil under it.

One of the cats is currently earning exactly where my bum and bottom of back are when I lie down in bed. For the last two nights she's actually crawled under the duvet (of darkness 😏) with me which is better than any hot water bottle.

I think on this thread we are all prone to overthinking things. Whilst it may not be the best or best looking solution, for £3.99 and some tiny fillable holes you'll save more in heating costs and can sort something better out when it's not literally freezing!

Did you get a gerbil to give my highland cows a brush and rub down whilst I was in the shower? They look very well groomed.

Have you tried stopping the gerbils from doing that sort of thing? They sulk!
