Andrea Egan elected as the new leader of Unison, the UK's biggest trade union - wouldn't be happy supporting Sandie Peggie

Source of support for trans identified people above biological - https://www.politicshome.com/news/article/unison-challenger-andrea-egan-labour-government-done-little-working-people
QUOTE FROM LINK:
Another is standing up for trans workers. I wonder what she makes of Sandie Peggie, the NHS nurse who complained about having to use the same hospital dressing room as a trans colleague. She has launched legal action against her trade union, alleging that the Royal College of Nursing failed to support her. How would Egan react if a similar case came to Unison?

“I haven’t followed that case. But what were the real issues within that? I have trans friends, trans women friends; my nephew is a trans man. I wouldn’t have an issue. I’d want to understand. Because the argument can then develop to anybody saying… ‘Well, I don’t want you there because you’ve got blonde hair’ or ‘I don’t want them there because they’ve got blue eyes’,” Egan says.

Andrea Egan speaks into a microphone at a protest in 2023.

Left-wing candidate Andrea Egan beats Starmer ally to lead Unison

Andrea Egan, who was expelled from Labour three years ago, replaces Unison's current general secretary Christina McAnea.

Judging by those comments about blonde hair / blue eyes, she doesn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the box does she?
A shame for women Unison members if they've elected yet another leader who doesn't give a fuck about women's rights.

RNApolymerase · 17/12/2025 11:25

Why has she not followed the case? I'd have thought someone aiming to be elected head of a union might find the case something worth following?

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 17/12/2025 11:26

These people are busy dividing everything into the Righteous and the Sinners with a chasm between the two. Services that won't be on speaking terms, who on earth do they think that helps? Women just need accessible provision: they need submission and control.

Whatever.

At this point not having to listen to idiots who bore on like this is a plus.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 17/12/2025 11:27

Yes I think we did an earlier thread about her. She has a trans identified 'nephew' and is seemingly oblivious to one of the biggest employment cases of recent years so she's either a liar or incompetent or both

I'd suspect it's to do with having embraced the Holy Batshit.

Her type are just one of the reasons I left Unison after many years. I was a rep as well. Absolute handmaiden wallopers. How fecking dare they? How much money have us women put into trade unions over the years for shitty service? I'm with Sandie, The Darlington Nurses and all the other women who said No to Men.

I was a Unison member and a rep too. Said goodbye to them about 5 years ago when I peaked after reading the eye opening threads on here.

junipery · 17/12/2025 12:18

Aren’t the government going to make firms tell new employees about joining a union? I think that should be followed by “FYI if you’re a woman don’t bother”.

SionnachRuadh · 17/12/2025 12:23

7% turnout, which tells a story about how represented Unison members feel.

I assume that McAnea will get a peerage. Starmer seems to be handing them out to everyone who's ever done him a favour.

Oh that's a really special kind of stupid. Jfc. 🙄

This just emphasises the importance in voting in any election which can have an impact on you. Time for a new union to stand up for women’s rights because all the current ones I’ve come are misogynistic and captured. Unison, RCN, BMA, CSP etc. Not sure about the PDA.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 17/12/2025 12:52

I've no idea how effective they are but I believe Affinity is being joined by countless women despairing of the misogyny embedded in the major unions?

Hmm. So she's calling SP a fascist. Unforgiveable.

Bloody hell. I just realised that was probably when I left too !🤣 Great minds !

That is low. Shows you how people only stay in unions cos they are in work that they feel they need some sort of union protection like people facing roles , health etc They have no faith in the leaders or policies.

Edited

She knows exactly what she's saying. Nasty.

BunfightBetty · 17/12/2025 15:41

Oh Andrea. I’m cringing for you.

Oldandgreyer · 17/12/2025 15:42

Labourlist says
Egan secured 59.8% of the vote, to McAnea's 40.2%, with just seven percent of members casting their vote.

FrippEnos · 17/12/2025 15:48

She seems to fail to understand that just because she consents to this. she doesn't consent for everybody.

oldtiredcyclist · 17/12/2025 15:59

I know this may sound a bit off from me, posting as a bloke, but she sounds as if her brain has fallen out, particularly compared to the vast majority of posters on here. She hasn't got a clue has she? I would ask, if they really mean the things they are saying, or is it just performative, because I would not like to be an ordinary woman, seeking help from Unison.

I left Unison, probably 2018, lots of GC women left at that time although I have to admit that I cannot remember the specific event that sparked the mass exodus.

I have since joined Affinity and have found them very helpful. They have staff on the end of the phone to give immediate advice, I needed to check a specific issue regarding disability and they were very knowledgeable. The subs are much cheaper than Unison.

ghostofadog · 17/12/2025 17:02

Glad I decided to leave Unison after 20 years membership. Trans family member means she's never going to engage her brain on this issue.

moto748e · 17/12/2025 17:02

Just seen Jeremy Corbyn on FB cheering her on. I felt I had to demur. 😀

Lalgarh · 17/12/2025 17:59

The main platform she's about is disaffiliation from Labour.

So all those lovely members subs could end up going to Your Party presumably. Hence positive noises from Corbyn
