I have finally steamed my way through the Christmas card list. I never feel like doing it but I’m always glad I made the effort, and it’s a lot easier now I do it via Internet. There ought to be a name for that feeling - there’s probably one in John Lloyd’s “Meaning of Liff” book. My new fridge-freezer was finally delivered yesterday and the whole experience has been a lesson to me about actually using up all the stuff I shove into my freezer. However it’s meant a cheap December in domestic expenses as I did no shopping except for milk and fresh fruit over the last couple of weeks.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/12/2025 11:16

DH has taken the last few cards to be posted, I’ve got to do some for various of the neighbours - idk why as we all saw each other at a very nice get together on Tuesday but it seems rude not to reciprocate. I do tend to wait till the last minute to see who sends one so I don’t accidentally loop in someone who doesn’t yet participate.

MarieDeGournay · 19/12/2025 11:33

Myrtle,I hope it's all going smoothly as poss, despite the AA's dire warnings!
Good luck with the scans.

Cher, I know that feeling of 'it must be somewhere, I actually used it not that long ago, I didn't thrown it out, it MUST BE HERE SOMEWHERE😡'

I was chuffed to see that the last date for posting within Ireland is 22nd which is Monday, so I can stop panicking/putting off/panicking/putting off doing those cards - I default to the panicking/put off mode, when it would be so much easier to just sit down and write the damn thing!

When I was a child my parents always posted cards to the neighbours, so they wouldn't seem like cheapskates, saving the cost of a stampConfused

Needless to say, I don't, so they can be popped through letterboxes any time

Hope you recover fully from the lurgy soon, Sionnach. I love 'Alexander the Grate'😂
No word from Deano, also be-lurgied - hope you're doing OK Deano😷

SionnachRuadh · 19/12/2025 10:00

Trying to sleep off the lurgy while also trying to clear up outstanding work before the holidays - not an easy balancing act...

Skimming through my Thorpe trial material, I discover that John Le Mesurier was known to his neighbours in Bridgend as "John the Carpet". This pleases me.

There used to be a lad in Belfast who sold fireplaces and traded as Alexander the Grate. He'd have done well in Wales.

Unless this is apocryphal I believe there's a builder in Hastings who trades under William the Concreter.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/12/2025 13:24

I hope it all goes well, @MyrtleLion.

I am having a quiet day, recovering from yesterday.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/12/2025 13:26

Oh - and when dh got the dogs back from the kennel, they told him they had to padlock their kennel run shut, because one of the dogs managed to unlock the bolt (on the outside of the gate), and let the two of them out to frolic!

Welcome back, Woley, glad you made it home in one piece.

That's one clever dog you have there, let her/him order their own dogfood online in future😄

I’m glad you had Harriet for company. I’ve been out for dinner with a few people, just got back.

RandomHypatia · 19/12/2025 22:56

It's Friday night and I'm zonked from work and an excited child. I wonder if there's quite a few people in the corners of the pub giving a quiet nod to anyone who passes whilst lacking the energy to talk. It's nice to soak up the warm, friendly atmosphere.
We have a quiet weekend until family arrive on Sunday afternoon. I'm hoping to squeeze in a bit more housework and a couple of nice walks before then.
I wanted to go to a carol service (even though none of us are religious), but all the local ones I've found are too late in the evening for MasterRandom. We're heading to Edinburgh for a few hours on Tuesday so I should check if there's any around the middle of the day there. I don't like looking at my phone in the pub though so I'll wait until tomorrow to do that.

The first time I saw a photo of one of these little critters, I thought it was AI, I couldn't believe anything could really be so cute - but they are real💕

I hope the company at dinner was as entertaining as Harrier, ErrolSmile

Work and an excited child? - quick, gerbils, a whole vat of whatever Hypatia fancies, ASAP!Grin

RandomHypatia · 19/12/2025 23:11

Hmmm, I think a hot chocolate with whipped cream and a flake please gerbils and a bit of shortbread in the shape of a Christmas tree.

Early night for me, so g'night all, may the Dream Gerbil bring you dreams of having everything that needs to be done, done🌛

ErrolTheDragon · 19/12/2025 23:14

Congenial company, thank you Marie, and a nice somewhat upmarket Indian meal.

to everyone.

For once, the food is all organised, the cards are all done & if the last 2 presents turn up in the post, that's finished too.

I just have 2 quilting projects to do & all the decorations to sort out. Hah! Something won't get done & it won't matter.

Oh, & the place is a tip.

Me and fella just got back from visiting a friend. He gashed a finger on his left hand trying to catch a falling bottle and bled everywhere. Fortunately he's right-handed. Other than that we had a lovely evening.

Britinme · 20/12/2025 03:30

Manic Christmas shopping in Costco today laying in things for the buffet I’m doing for about fourteen of us on Christmas Day. I looked at the Norwegian prawns and decided I couldn’t emulate Hyacinth Bucket so I bought panko-coated shrimp instead, which I can just shove in the oven. My overarching wish is for it all to be easy this year! Anyway, bar gerbil please bring me a swift shot of sleeping potion, and dream gerbil if you could conjure up some sweet dreams to go with it, that would be great.

FuzzyPuffling · 20/12/2025 07:42

It was the funeral of DH's best friend yesterday, so not much Christmas merriment about chez Fuzzy.

DeanElderberry · 20/12/2025 07:48

Hello Bluestockingers.

My advice to all of you is DO NOT CATCH THIS FLU. I'll have to go back and read the thread, but I did spot the splendid baubles a few days back.

Anyway, I'm on day 15 of it and think I'm feeling a little better. I had hoped to do a supermarket shop yesterday but wanted to get cash from the bank first and discovered that the town council's benevolent action of making car-park parking free for December meant that there was not a space to be found anywhere at 9.30am. And the ATM wasn't working. I called in at the fuel merchants on my way home to a hot drink and a little lie down.

So now my hopes are pinned on someone in the bank having had the wit to fill the machine. Otherwise I'll be using a card.

bah humbug

FuzzyPuffling · 20/12/2025 07:54

Hello Deano,
Good to see you back and I'm so sorry you've been laid so low. That there flu sounds horrendous.
Did you get any help from Bessie and the nursing quokkas? I do hope so.

Here's to your convalescence and growing strength. Take it easy.

Swashbuckled · 20/12/2025 08:03

That sounds dreadful, Deano 😥. I’m glad you’re on the mend.

My inland friend came round last night and cooked us some home made pizzas. A large amount. She also brought two slices of homemade cake. It was a nice evening and I had gin.

I have a busy day today completing various tasks before I can leave. Visiting another friend this afternoon before driving seawards again. It could actually be a very long day as I have lots to do before setting off, and a fair amount to do when I get there too.

DeanElderberry · 20/12/2025 08:12

Several of us in the village came down with this after an event in the local pub on December 4th - it was crammed with people so we probably got bombarded with a lot of viral particles. Just as well we were all vaccinated.

I haven't been to church since, but will be back this weekend and there's a funeral on Monday (not flu related) which will be a chance for a general catch-up (and a lot of barking post-viral coughing) as we ease ourselves back into life.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2025 08:20

Another round of Brew and sympathy - glad you’re on the mend at last, Deano.

Sorry to hear of your and DH's loss, and hope the funeral was as ok as possible 💐
