Yes… in that era lots of male comics dressed up but just for some sketches. The Pythons, the Two Ronnies, Les Dawson, Dick Emery… iirc more did than didn’t! I don’t remember Morecambe and Wise putting on frocks?

lcedcakethereforeIam · 13/12/2025 17:05

I don't think Mike Yarwood ever dragged up either.

SionnachRuadh · 13/12/2025 17:08

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2025 16:43

He was 99!

idk about drag queens but he’s the only man I can think of who impersonated the actual Queen.

There was a bloke in Holland who used to impersonate Queen Beatrix.

If my memory isn't playing tricks on me, he managed to blag his way into a European summit.

I don't know if it's comforting to know that the Dutch plod can be as oblivious as ours.

It was so popular when I was a kid. But nobody was trying to say they were women. It felt very different from nowadays, didn't it?

fanOfBen · 13/12/2025 17:20

Hi! I could use some company, especially as irl I have to go and socialise in an environment where I probably have to avoid gabbing about Kelly and Peggie and especially Kemp... also am feeling weird after a nn change mishap on another thread ;-) If there's a Feuerzangenbowle ongoing, a mug from it would be perfect. Thanks!
[eta feeling overwhelmed, because have been busy all day, because have got nothing done the several previous days thanks to news following... roll on retirement, coming soon.]

lcedcakethereforeIam · 13/12/2025 17:30

Hello @fanOfBen one of the gerbils has developed into a bit of a pyromaniac and seems to have mastered drinks with fire. I forget which one it was. The one with the singed whiskers.

Just tell the Bar Gerbil what your poison is and settle down somewhere.

If you have any preference as to how you'd like to be portrayed by AI, speak up. Jic one of the AI using regulars stops by.

Hedgehogsrightsarehumanrights · 13/12/2025 17:31

Hello fan of ben nice to see you here

I don't think Mike Yarwood ever dragged up either.

He was a proper impersonator, I guess he had the sense to know he wouldn’t be convincing as a woman.

EdithStourton · 13/12/2025 18:11

Sorry, minor rant incoming...
As most of you know, I lost my shit big time with my own dear family the other week, due to being forgotten about the second I set foot out of the door, etc etc.

Anyhoo, DH and I were discussing our friends Amy and Ben, mentioned upthread, and their friend - let's call him Evan.

DH observed that Amy isn't a fan of Evan, because he talks over her and ignores her.
'Classic misogynist', I said. I've met Evan. I am also not a fan.
'Yeah...' said DH. Then added, 'Ben said to me the other day that Amy XYZ ABC blah blah.'
I howled with exasperated laughter. 'Invisible bloody woman AGAIN! It was ME who told you what Amy said about all of that. Not Ben, ME. Fuck SAKE!'

Possibly as a result of this, he brought me a cup of tea when I was gardening earlier.

🙄again.
<sigh>
Mulled wine and a HUGE plate of Yorkshires with gravy, followed by the hot chocolate bowser, please, Gosie.

The Pythons produced some absolute classics.
The Loretta scene in The Life of Brian was a work of genius.

Boiledbeetle · 13/12/2025 19:17

Apologies for those waiting on orders.

The gerbils are on their tea break.

Gesundheit is the fire starter if I remember correctly Cake.

I could aaalmost feel sorry for your DH @EdithStourton He probably thought he was getting back into your favour by telling you something he had heard, after forgetting to tell you about the invitation earlier.

On the other hand, I'm not so magnanimous, so I agree he's a twerp Grin

Bugger forgot the image

Ive heard of microclimates but I’ve never seen a microseason before.

AuntieMsDamsonCrumble · 13/12/2025 19:29

I do remember Stanley Baxter from some of the Saturday variety shows in the 70s. I wasn't a particular fan, but I recall thinking when he was dressed up as a showgirl, that he had very good legs.

I was quite envious 😐

A hot chocolate please, gerbils, once you've finished your break - with a side order of Baileys.

have i seen that image elsewhere ?

StarryCat · 13/12/2025 19:50

Feeling your pain there @EdithStourton

I love that the gerbils get to have their break with daisies and butterflies in front of the snow.

You can order weather of your choice when you place your food or drink order with the gerbils.

It's a new service.

MarieDeGournay · 13/12/2025 20:06

You're very welcome fanOfBen - but now that I see the time you posted at, you are possibly socialising in less friendly surrounding already cos it's nearly 8.
I hope it goes OK, and you manage to save up all the comments about tribunals for MNSmile
Feuerzangenbowle - how many of those can you consume without being able to ask for another? Though I suppose that's where 'Same again bargerbil' comes in handy.

The Parliamo Glasgow thing by S Baxter I remember was done to camera as if it was a real language lesson, with repetition of unfamiliar sounds etc. I googled it, and found it - but only on a 7" vinyl record released in 1963!

Poor Edith, one step forward two steps back, eh?
I've both done that, and had it done to me - telling somebody that somebody told me...and they say yes actually it was me - awks! but I've also had the ME ME ME THAT WAS ME experience.

Good idea.
for now I’m happy with cold outside as it’s nice and snug in here by the blazing fire. (Obviously I can have a blazing fire wherever and whenever I want but I’m considerate and prefer it in a hearth with a chimney)

MyrtleLion · 13/12/2025 20:15

I had a Baileys and Caramel martini at lunch. Actually I had two.

They were lovely and had a square of brownie on a cocktail stick that soaked up the alcohol.

I'm sure Goalie can knock me up a Bluestocking version or six.

Oooh, that sounds good. I may need to try one.

Great to hear that the interview went well and you're able to relax for a while, Myrtle

MyrtleLion · 13/12/2025 20:31

I have the whole day tomorrow! Then I have to get up very early to get the car in for a service.

They called during our lunch to say someone wants to buy our car and are we in the market to sell it?

Yes, very much so. But we need to pay off our finance, have a big deposit to buy a new car and even if I get this job, I'm probably not eligible for finance for six months. But I'll have the chat.

MarieDeGournay · 13/12/2025 20:32

I've been thinking -
'it's coming on Christmas, they're cutting down trees/They're putting up reindeer, singing songs of joy and peace'

but for some of our dear Bluestockingers, this must be a very difficult time, facing Christmas for the first time without a loved one.

There's a quiet corner in the Bluey, and in our hearts, for you💙
