Andrea Egan standing to be the general secretary of unison has apparently never heard of the Sandie Peggie case, doesn't understand the issues and compares it to banning ppl with blue eyes

because she's clearly a total fuckwit

This is the best intellect they can find for General Secretary?

I'm not a member so this isn't a recommendation but Affinity union are very clear about free speech and the importance of not indulging in student politics in the workplace. They've apparently picked up lots of members leaving the anti women unions.

Thanks Mrs O! I will have a look at them .

Well yes. You've nailed it. Lazy, uninformed, not willing or able to get her head around basic information, but has big opinions on it anyway.

Fuckwit. Embarrassingly so. Not really the best thing to display openly when you're looking for a job, but that lack of self awareness is another big clue to the interview pannel.

lcakethereforeIam · 18/05/2026 12:08

She's appealing to the (I'm betting) relatively small number of members who actually bother to vote. Especially the tra monomaniacs. She has a trans niece to polish her bonafides as a true believer and ally. Even assuming the other candidates aren't as batshit, which is unlikely, their vote share will be split. Going for a block, one issue vote is possibly not a bad strategy.

ItsCoolForCats · 18/05/2026 08:12

Yes, it's embarrassing that she doesn't understand that the EHRC guidance will simply reflect the law as it actually is.

I get the impression that she is reading from a pre prepared script written by someone else.

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 28/05/2026 21:55

How do they propose to protect women's equality and sex based rights then? What is their answer?

Utter nonsense.

I cancelled my Membership last week. I’d love to know if many other people have done the same recently. Anyone care to share if they have on this post? I’m thinking if any shit happens at work I’ll just have to draw on the legal cover I’ve got on my household insurance or just kick up an almighty fuss on social media. Sad to think I can’t get the backing of a decent Union anymore. What a sham.

I never joined them. They are the major option at my workplace but all this put me right off. I used to be a rep but I can't join any union that refuses to represent the people who pay their wages.

And it's THE LAW!!! Can't wait for them to be sued but, sadly, it feels like each union is going to have to be sued in turn.

summermidnightsun · 29/05/2026 06:41

I joined Unison a few months ago as a lot of changes are expected in my workplace so I thought I can’t afford not to. But seeing they want to object to the EHRC guidance has made me want to cancel my membership. I knew they had certain views and allegiances before joining but now I think maybe they do just hate women even though women must be the majority of their membership.

paintedpanda · 29/05/2026 06:53

I’m struggling to know what to do at the moment as a Unison member. It’s the only union that is represented at my trust (aside from the NMC who don’t take non-nurse or midwife staff, not that I’m sure they’d be any better). Recently people have needed the union so I’m reluctant to come out just in case. I’m on maternity leave, I feel like I need it now more than ever, but it feels so wrong giving them money when they stand for everything I don’t believe in.

They’ve told people to complain if their trust changes policy before the guidance is passed through a 40 day mandatory review. They don’t seem to care about the law. Doesn’t the workplace regulations say that bathrooms must be single sex?

ThursdayNext1 · 29/05/2026 07:04

Hasn’t followed the case, knows nothing about it (apparently) yet states wouldn’t be comfortable representing her. Wtf?!

Subject: Objection to UNISON’s policies undermining women’s single-sex rights and safety
Dear UNISON,
I am writing as a concerned member/supporter to strongly object to your union’s continued promotion of policies that prioritise gender identity over biological sex, effectively eroding women’s rights to single-sex spaces, particularly in healthcare settings. Your stance that “trans women are women” and advocacy for self-ID access to female facilities ignores documented risks to women’s safety and dignity. unison.org.uk

Specific incidents highlight the failures of these policies:

• A female patient was raped on a hospital ward by a trans-identifying male. When she reported it, the hospital initially told police no rape could have occurred because “there was no male” on the ward, due to self-ID placement policies. medicalbrief.co.za

• Nurses at Darlington Memorial Hospital who raised concerns about a trans-identifying male colleague (Rose Henderson) using female changing rooms faced harassment and discrimination. An employment tribunal ruled that the NHS trust violated the nurses’ dignity by requiring them to share these spaces and failing to address their legitimate safety and privacy worries, creating a hostile environment. bbc.com

These cases, among others, demonstrate why biological sex-based protections matter for vulnerable women in hospitals, mental health units, and workplaces. Post-Supreme Court clarification on the Equality Act, unions should support proportionate single-sex provisions for privacy, dignity, and safety rather than opposing them. unison.org.uk

I urge UNISON to reconsider its position, prioritise the female majority of your membership, and advocate for clear sex-based rights in line with the law. Women’s rights are not bigotry.

Yours sincerely,

I know but they are the major union at my workplace and even the other smaller ones seem to believe the same sort of thing they do unfortunately.

weegierama · 29/05/2026 08:14

I am still in UNISON. I think my plan is to contact my local branch about this national campaign to 'change the law'..am apoplectic at thought of my subs being used to pay for that 😡. Anyway, am thinking could be more mileage in raising that locally (will communicate to them nationally too and of course gives pelters on X etc). My branch has never made any trans inclusive statements, no sign of pink and blue flags, logos etc on their social media pages...am hoping they are sensible 😬

Theythinkitsallover1966 · 29/05/2026 08:36

I left Unison two years ago for this very reason. When I challenged at local level due to a local “cervix havers” campaign, it was ignored except for one voice who contacted me privately. The conversation had to be off the record and anonymous. When the issue of mixed toilets became a reality in my workplace, which was the women’s toilets with a newly labelled “unisex” symbol I challenged it directly with the director. It was corrected and common sense prevailed but Unison were not interested.
It saddened me that a union could negate biological reality for women who have continually been the overwhelming discriminated cohort in the workplace.
The single status debacle pay outs were so fresh in unions and employers minds yet no joined up thinking. I joined Affinity. Excellent experience so far.
They don’t have a place in collective bargaining but other than that they offer you everything else. I’ve had one occasion where I’ve needed advice and possible representation and it has been excellent, extremely professional, sound legally and excellent with responses.
unison and unite have a tiny number of very loud voices and they are ignoring the majority. Reminds me of the advert they used to run with the elephant and the mouse. Seems the mouse is identifying as an elephant now! Vote with your feet ladies.

summermidnightsun · 29/05/2026 08:50

Surely they must be getting more backlash with this campaign than positivity? Why aren’t they listening?

Theythinkitsallover1966 · 29/05/2026 08:50

Edit post.
just checked the unison advert and it was an ant and a bear. Same principle though.

I wasn't in a union for years, but I joined Affinity not long ago, mainly for the legal backup in case I have to challenge my employer on single sex spaces, so this is good to hear!

That's why I joined Affinity too. I've actually had to use them twice in relation to a flexible work request which my employer fucked up, and then in relation to a pay grievance. They're really responsive and really helpful.

Does anyone know what happens if you join a union not ‘recognised’ by your employer? My employer recognises Unison and a few others but not Affinity.

AFAIK the only difference is that a union that isn’t recognised won’t participate in wage negotiations or be consulted regarding redundancies etc. They can still act for you over your personal issues with your employer.
