Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Baroness Falkner: Labour Party has abandoned women and feminism

“… She has unfinished business, however. Three months ago she submitted, with the support of the board, what she views as her legacy — statutory guidance on how public bodies, businesses and employers should interpret a seismic ruling by the Supreme Court. The ruling, on April 16, clarified that under the Equality Act 2010 the terms “women” and “sex” referred to “biological” sex, not acquired gender.

Since then, however, the guidance has gone nowhere. It is now somewhere in the bowels of the Department for Education, and there is no indication of when it will be published. The EHRC, Falkner says, has been told by the government that it is “all very complex and we need to take our time over it”.

She doesn’t buy it. “We’ve had external counsel, internal counsel, everybody’s looked at it. I mean, I’m so certain of the lawfulness of our code that I don’t think I’ve ever been so certain about anything before,” she says. “The other explanation simply is that they’re terrified of their MPs who would wish for trans self-identification or trans inclusion to prevail across all areas of society, including Section 3 of the Equality Act, and would wish for the exemptions not to exist.” …

Thanks for posting this. So many well argued points in it.

But what I want to say is I am so sorry that during all the time Baroness Falkner was standing up women, and being slurred at her own work place, she was also having to fight cancer.

Just the most fantastic dedication, and self effacing public persona.

Lets hope now she is free of the Government's duplicity, and free of cancer (Flowers) that she can be her true self in public.

Thank you Baroness!

What a brave woman, going through gruelling treatment and so much else but never giving up.

Imnobody4 · 05/12/2025 22:29

“I was mentored by a former, very senior, Labour woman, Shirley Williams. I was aware of women like Harriet Harman, Margaret Jay and Hilary Armstrong, Labour women who were committed to feminism in a manner which carefully asserted equality, true women’s equality. And I think they’ve lost it. This particular generation of Labour MPs have lost it.”

She really nails it, Labour are betraying women.
She is an inspiration, tenacious in doing what's right instead of what's easy. Such courage and dignity.

She's going out swing, good for her, especially considering everything else she has to deal with. My thanks to this women for all she's done, it's a debt that cannot be repaid. 💐😍🥇

Imbrocator · 05/12/2025 23:27

Such an impressive woman. So glad she set the example she did to others and stuck solidly to her convictions in the face of what must have felt like overwhelming barriers.

IwantToRetire · 05/12/2025 23:39

And I should have added being publicly insulted by the WEC.

Falkner is absolutely right, this generation has totally lost it. They're either woke or too afraid to say anything.

Thanks so much for posting. She's done so much. One of the good ones.

Toseland · 05/12/2025 23:48

"...they’re terrified..."
So instead of doing their jobs - they are leaving the fight to women and girls.

A cancer that only women can have, at that.

IwantToRetire · 06/12/2025 00:46

On Sky papers or whatever it is called Zoe Williams is going on and on about the EHRC, Baroness Falkner have "over reached" themselves. ZW says just because the court has ruled sex is biological doesn't mean it is "mandated" it just means organisations can now "choose" to have biological women only.

No surprise as ZW writes for the Guardian.

And male commentator, presumably from the "right" to "balance" ZW could hardly get a word in.

ZW pursed her leaps when he quote Falkner saying Labour has let women down.

So cross that this woman is allowed to sit on tv and spume out her contempt.

Baroness Falkner rules, OK.

What a fantastic woman and I'm so glad she's well again - my friend died from advanced ovarian cancer when it was missed by the Doctors. She is very lucky to have made a full recovery. And again, what a fantastic woman fighting the good fight.

A cancer that only women can have, at that.

Yes, it’s a gruelling disease and treatment, like many female cancers, involving removal of ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, uterus. Recovery is very far from a walk in the park. I’m amazed she didn’t crumble.

Funnily enough, and contra some of the bonkers trans ideology, when I had mine removed I felt much more acutely female, not less.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/12/2025 02:41

Zoe Williams is and always has been an idiot, even before she became so invested in this issue.

deadpan · 06/12/2025 06:05

@IwantToRetire I didn't know that. She's very determined and it's amazing she was able to work on such an important piece of legislation.

Given she's completely clueless about the legal implications of a hasty approval of government regulations, she certainly couldn't have left a moment sooner….

Of course had she had to put her own money on the line for the inevitable legal fall out rather than the tax payer's she'd be at a snails pace…

hholiday · 06/12/2025 07:07

Amazing women. We are blessed with some excellent baronesses.

MyThreeWords · 06/12/2025 07:26

It is lovely to hear from her, after years of good work in a role that wasn't really compatible with speaking out. Good to know that she will be active as a crossbench peer.

And working in that difficult role while dealing with advanced ovarian cancer! What an impressive person.

Hope she enjoys this new phase of her life.

DrBlackbird · 06/12/2025 07:38

We were so lucky to have her fight for women’s and girls rights when so many female politicians and ordinary women have rushed to smugly affirm themselves as the virtuous ones. Happy to leave their sisters facing biologically intact males in female rape centres and female prisons and female hospital wards and of course taking the podium away from regular ordinary women athletes. Big thank you to her from this female.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/12/2025 07:44

She's an amazing woman and she clearly has no intention of keeping quiet about labours cowardice over this issue

Brilliant, isn't it!

ArabellaSaurus · 06/12/2025 08:06

A phenomenal woman. She has my utmost respect.

ArabellaSaurus · 06/12/2025 08:14

'“I got a lot of threats,” she says. “I had to change my way to work. I walked in different directions, to different Tube stations. Because you’re afraid that somebody will flip and attack you, knife you, do whatever.”
When Labour came to power, ministers initially suggested that her contract was likely to come to an end in December 2024. She decided not to fight it, not least because of her cancer diagnosis.

“I was extremely ill and going through chemotherapy and still hanging on in there doing a three-day-a-week job,” she says. “I thought well, if I’m not going to be around for very much longer it doesn’t really matter whether I get renewed or not. I’ll just do this job to the best of my ability until events overtake themselves. And I just plodded on.”'

I'm in total awe. May we all develop that level of tenacity. So glad she is recovered.

LlynTegid · 06/12/2025 08:18

I'm not convinced that Labour ever was the party of feminism.
