The Rest is Entertainment

Marina Hyde (Guardian columnist) and Richard Osman's YouTube podcast The Rest is Entertainment did an episode on Tuesday about the Davie resignation along with other items.
They both discussed the Trump non saga and also mentioned the gender critical comments made in the memo/letter from Prescott.
They both made mild and sensible comments about how "a lot of people" would have been upset by certain things such as victims of male assault being made to refer to their attacker with female pronouns.
Obviously there were the usual "transphobe" claimants in the comments, but I was surprised they touched on it at all especially as Marina writes for the Guardian.
I'd love to include the link, but the episode isn't in the videos list with all the others. It's possible they had to take it down because overshadowing the TRA's were the people who think the BBC is the work of the devil. So there could have been a lot of comments that might have caused the removal 🤔

What’s your thread asking or wanting to discuss?

ProfessorRizz · 13/11/2025 08:32

I think MH is secretly GC, and RO knows the score. Both work in the media, so have to walk a line.

The OP is highlighting a podcast episode that some people might want to listen to and possibly discuss.

I listened to it
The discussion was a couple of seconds at most

OK

Why should women in the media stay silent, they have a voice and should have used it. MH could get a job anywhere and probably doesn't need to work anyway.
These women are so weak and have let the rest of us down. "For evil to prevail....etc"

LouisaGuy · 13/11/2025 08:40

The podcast is still there and hasn’t been removed

LouisaGuy · 13/11/2025 08:43

In fact there are multiple comments under the episode itself calling the presenters transphobes for even mentioning the topic briefly and saying some people may not agree 😒

Or they don’t want to introduce the shit storm that follows, and impacts their family and children’s lives too

@Justtoodamneasy what they said did only last a few seconds but from MH and RO I thought it was quite a big thing that they did in the first place. They could have very easily avoided mentioning it.

Another couple of media people tentatively speaking up now, it's shocking how women were let down by the luvvy set.

They spoke about fury at male rapists being described as women, and public sympathy for Martine Croxall.

Not really contentious points.

I do get this but some celebs have no qualms about entering other toxic debates ie Brexit, Trump, Gaza. Women's rights seemed a step too far even for those who self identify as feminists. They didn't want to get involved as trans rights was seen in their world as the latest 'trendy' cause.

And that’s totally cool
those celebs are ok with opening up with families and children to abuse

MH is not
I wouldn’t be either

Tunnockstester · 13/11/2025 09:02

How do we know MH's view? I don't recall any piece by her about it although she has plenty to say about everything else.
Ordinary women have spoken out and lost jobs etc.

ItsCoolForCats · 13/11/2025 09:07

I've just had a look at the comments on Spotify. Jeez. I'm guessing the demographic who listen to this are Guardian readers who think they are right about everything because they are progressive and enlightened.

And if MH does have sympathy towards GC views, such s the perfectly reasonable one that rapists shouldn't be referred to with female pronouns, do they think calling her a terf, transphobe and bigot is going to change her mind? They just show themselves up for for they are every time - intolerant and unreasonable.

And then there are people defending the splicing together of the Trump footage. It's ok because they hate Trump. Would they be ok with the BBC doing that with a Zack Polanski speech to mislead viewers about something he said? Because it works both ways.

Supporterofwomensrights · 13/11/2025 09:14

Marina Hyde wrote this article (linked below) for the Guardian and I was taken aback to read this straightforward sentence:

The fact is, the three mistakes that form the bulk of Michael Prescott’s explosive leaked memo about impartiality – the Panorama edit, issues with coverage of the transgender issue and bias in the BBC Arabic service – happened and are bad.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/nov/11/bbc-tim-davie-donald-trump-nigel-farage-boss

I think there's a greater chance MH will become more GC after the TRA pile-on for her mild comments so far.

It’s the BBC v Trump, Farage and co. Who in their right mind would want to be its new boss? | Marina Hyde

Public life is a minefield and the best and brightest just don’t want to know. How convenient for foes of the most trusted news organisation in the world, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

Theeyeballsinthesky · 13/11/2025 09:15

It's pretty piss poor but totally unsurprising that even now they won't really go there but I think of all "the rest is...." podcasts only tom & Dominic from TRIH have supported JKR/challenged the behaviour of mob mentality. TRIP are completely nothing to see here abd if there is, it's that TWAW and why can't women shut up and be kind, Gary linekar so happily outspoken about so many things stayed silent on several stories about men in women's football on TRIF

I tend to think if they don’t mention it at all it’s because they’re GC but don’t want to get any stick from TRAs. The TWAW brigade (looking at you Kirsty) are usually quite vocal about it.

This is a YouTube link to the latest podcast on Tuesday. It’s got Kim Kardashian in the title, but it’s about the BBC too.

@ItsCoolForCats Trumps speech was about an hour long, panorama lasts 30 minutes these days. He was impeached because of the speech, it isn't as though panorama changed the context.

I think it is progress that the presenters on this podcast have acknowledged the BBC has flaws. They have both (IMHO) been unthinking supporters of the beeb in previous podcasts, devoting large parts of several broadcasts to praise of the beeb. It is interesting to contrast their comments with those from the, "No Fear. No Favour. Seen in Journalism" podcast.

I was a huge BBC supporter. Grew up with Radio 4 in the 70s and 80s. It was my “go to” media outlet for news, analysis and entertainment. Not anymore. The last 10 years have changed that. I rarely tune into Radio 4 now and wouldn’t trust any of its news programmes if I did. Seeing the bias over transgender reporting; the blatant targeting of kids with programmes like, “Just a Girl” and articles like this one Trans and a triplet: Coming out brought our family closer together - BBC News; and the complete lack of concern over the erosion of women’s rights has given me a deep distaste for the whole institution. I would not shed any tears over its demise.

I suspect MH has been ensconced in a self-righteous Guardian bubble. She was quite sneery a week or so ago about the Times, recommending that people be aware they have a political agenda in their reporting while failing completely to acknowledge the paper she writes for has an opposite and (again IMHO) far more pervasive and biased agenda.

Issy, Nick and Josh Binnell

Trans and a triplet: Coming out made us closer

Josh came out as transgender 18 months ago and had support from from his family, friends and school.

Come on. They could have showed the start of his speech and then made it clear they were jumping to a different part of it. It was deliberately misleading.
