'I'm a former Labour voter!' 'No, I'm a former Labour voter'

A (kind of) light hearted nod to the "I'm Spartacus" thread but I'm done. I used to vote Labour, campaigned and leafletted for Labour. I tried to give Labour the benefit of the doubt but I now realise I was wrong. Labour left me.

Anyone else feel the same?

I'm a former Labour voter...

genuinely, why?

what changed your mind?
(bullet points would be great)

Pollqueen · 28/10/2025 19:27

Well i remember the excitement on the eve of the 97 election when Blair was a shoe in and the excitement at this exciting change and we all know how that turned out

I also remember the misery of the 70's, the strikes, 4 day weeks under Labour so I never really had high hopes this time round. Shame though

theilltemperedmaggotintheheartofthelaw · 28/10/2025 19:27

Who else are we supposed to vote for then? The Greens and LibDems left me as well (I'm in England)

PS I thought this was going to be a reference to "I'm Brian and so is my wife"

Sausagenbacon · 28/10/2025 19:29

I've been a former Labour voters for almost a decade.
Don't know if that counts

Because I don't feel the Labour party is interested in the sex based rights of females as enshrined in the Equality Act and reaffirmed by the Supreme Court 🤷‍♀️.

I left them because of Iraq, then voted Green/LibDem/tactically. But the Greens and LibDems now disgust me.

I don't blame you the Greens and the Lib Dems equally don't care about women.

I honestly don't know who to vote for now. I care about the environment but can't vote Green having seen their leader's comments about women. I don't trust Labour any more. The Lib Dems are a binfire on women's rights and only the Tories seem sensible, but I'm not a Tory and would never vote Reform either.

Even the Women's Equality Party turned out to be a male pandering party (wear a dress? Come on in).

See I 100% agree with you that the Labour Government isn’t interested in protecting biological female rights, but I also have the option that no political party has this interest. Perhaps they do in reality but the fear of upsetting a certain group is so strong, they’d rather not have that as a notable quality and therefore disguise it. I hope that makes sense

JillyJoy · 28/10/2025 21:06

This afternoon I included this sentence to a friend.
. . that whilst the Tories did cause many problems through incompetence but Starmer has not managed to form many plans to mend things. Blaming Brexit has to be sheer desperation. There are no reasons to be optimistic.

Me too. I used to consider various policies - and always decided on Labour. But now the sex based rights of me and my three daughters come before anything.

I don’t think political parties realise how many women and girls have experienced MVAWG and are willing to vote on protecting women.

i don’t care how a man identifies he’s not welcome in my female
spqces.

It is very disappointing to feel that as well as the Left Wing Political Party's so many of the organisations that should be supporting women, such as Unions and Universities have also abdicated their natural roles.

lcakethereforeIam · 28/10/2025 21:54

I would be a former Labour voter but they stand no chance where I live. I have absolutely no-one to vote for. I believe the SDP are GC but they've never stood in my constituency. I was surprised to learn they still existed. Are the Monster Raving Loonies GC?

Coatsoff42 · 28/10/2025 22:56

I’m so horrified by the bin fire of women’s freedom around the world recently: Afghanistan, The Congo, America, I am happy to vote purely to maintain the freedom of women in this country. I don’t think voting to support the freedom of 50% of the people nationwide is a bad thing.
I used to vote labour, I would like to continue, I am happy to vote conservative as my MP is very pro GC, I draw the line at Farage.

I don't know, feels like Starmer has no appetite to touch this at all and the Equality Act will stay as it is, post-FWS judgment. Probably the best we'll get for now. Could be better but it was still a win.

BendoftheBeginning · 29/10/2025 06:51

I have been furious with how thoroughly women’s rights have been sold out in public life. Every party is doing it. And seeing people gullibly believe Reform gives a shiny shit about women’s rights winds me up no end. They couldn’t make their cynicism any clearer - tell the women Labour is the architect of all ills (handy, given it was the Tories who were in power during the rise of trans rights - yet more proof that misogyny is a problem with no political affiliation), insinuate that a vote for Reform is a feminist vote, and then they can be the next party to stitch us up with a smile.

No thank you.

Wishiwasaway · 29/10/2025 07:07

i also couldn’t vote labour in the last election and have campaigned for them all my life.
i spoilt my ballot paper.

Summerhillsquare · 29/10/2025 07:53

It's not a permanent state of being. You make a decision at each election, taking into account the context at the time.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/10/2025 07:58

I’m a former Labour member as well as a former Labour voter.

RoyalCorgi · 29/10/2025 08:01

I voted Labour all my adult life until the last election. But I am now politically homeless. I don't believe any of the major - or even minor - political parties care about women's rights. It still astounds me that the niche discipline of queer theory has somehow infiltrated, not just all our major institutions (universities, schools, prison system, police, children's charities, libraries, councils etc etc and etc) but all our political parties too.

Political parties are at least supposed to be based on a coherent and distinctive ideology. The fact that they all believe the same thing, and that same thing is a thing that is fundamentally wrong, both morally and scientifically, will never stop being astonishing.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/10/2025 08:05

It’s deeply disorienting. It’s just such abject bollocks.

Vote tactically to keep reform out then. Please 🙏

KvotheTheBloodless · 29/10/2025 08:12

I've always voted Labour, including last time, because I just don't know who else to vote for. I'm centre left in political views, but feel that Labour has a real problem - it's not just the TWAW nonsense, it's the fact that they've never had a real female leader (I.e. not an acting/temporary one) and for that matter they've never had one who wasn't white either. It's a disgrace in this day and age, and to my mind demonstrates that, although they pay lip service to equality, what they really mean is 'we support white males, however they choose to identify'.

Pleasealexa · 29/10/2025 08:12

My big fear is a coalition at the next election made up of Labour/Libs/Greens, all 3 would happily give up women's rights.

Kathleen Stock for PM, Helen Joyce as Chancellor, Myra as Home Secretary, JK as Culture Minister
