Maxine Peake, hasn’t peaked. Slagging off JKR

chrith · 10/09/2025 09:02

so another sleb has come out to slag off JKR.
What’s the likelihood she’s read JK’s essay, or any of her tweets, including the brilliant recent rebuttal she gave to Chris Columbus? Zero, I reckon.

Maxine Peake furiously slams JK Rowling and shares fears of 'culture wars'

J.K. Rowling and Nigel Farage were referenced by Maxine Peake whilst she drew comparisons between the late Mary Whitehouse's campaigning and 'culture wars' today recently

I liked her when she was large and playing Twinkle in Dinnerladies. The south bank show actually followed her in her first year at drama school (RADA) so she was marked for fame for a long time. I remember her saying she made a conscious decision to lose a large amount of weight to get better roles.

ThePoshUns · 10/09/2025 14:51

How disappointing to see another actress captured by trans ideology. I wonder if she’d be happy to see the roles that she dieted for given to a TW?

Aah no... I went off MP a while ago. To me she's like Jane Horrocks with the deliberate northerness (I am from a deprived northern background, but I lost my strong northern accent as I moved around the UK)

I love Kathy Burke though - ever since I saw her in Scrubbers and more so after she publicly called out Helena Bonham Carter when HBC moaned that "if you're not pretty and are working class you have an easier time in terms of people's attitudes towards you" (KB took to the letters page in Time Out - calling HBC a stupid cnut). A bit gutted that she's been captured too 🙁

It seems to be a luvvie thing

It’s an industry that’s difficult to break into and stay successful in, and networking and being liked/easy to get on with is at least as important to it as talent. It was also an industry where gay people could be themselves long before it was okay for them to be out officially.

So I think a lot of actors have just fallen into supporting trans rights as the next gay rights/just a bit of acceptable gender non-conformity/“I heard that nasty JKR is transphobic” bit of group think. I can almost guarantee MP has never stopped to think any of this through very hard, and why should she? Her paycheques benefit from just going with the flow. I mean, look at what happened to Glinner! That’s let them all know what happens if you think too hard.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 10/09/2025 15:16

I was sad to see her become a has-been. I'm even more saddened she's stooped to the low of jumping on the JKR bashing bandwagon for a bit of publicity.

ThisWaryAzureViewer · 10/09/2025 15:23

With so many high profile people speaking out against JKR's hatred - and there will be many, many more to come yet - I genuinely do wonder if there will come a point at which the counter balance against your obsession with her reaches such extremes that some rational part of your brain kicks in, a la Mitchell & Webb, and wonders whether you might not be the ones in the wrong after all.

Lalgarh · 10/09/2025 15:23

Looks like she was being interviewed by Samira Ahmed on R4 front row.

Ahmed got into a huge faux pas when she was interviewing Kae Tempest about their new album about transformation or whatever and dared to link it to Tempest transitioning to now identify as a man ♂️. Cue HUGE strop from Tempest about intrusion on personal history.

What hatred? JKR advocates for women's rights.

Can you explain what is rational about believing that men can become women simply by stating that they can?

can you quote or copy and paste the hatred please? Is it her objection to sex based rights? Her objection to males
in female sport? Her objections to males in women’s prisons and domestic abuse services? Please describe and detail what this hate is, exactly, with direct quotes and using JKR’s actual words. I’ll wait…

Leaving aside your bizarre positioning of believing in the role of the sexed body in the oppression of women, opposing the medicalisation of children, and supporting the need for single-sex spaces and services as 'hatred', if anything MP seems behind the curve. The 'ooo isn't JKR awful' ship has largely sailed.

I didn't hear this. Bit rich, isn't it, to write a whole album about a subject and then strop about it when an interviewer has the temerity to suggest that it might have to do with a change you've made very publicly and visibly.

Oh hello. Maybe you can be the first poster to answer the question I asked in the following thread.

its clear the ship has sailed and the overwhelming majority of the UK is on JK’s side. Why? Because it’s the side of common sense and truth. It’s the right side of history.

Hatred is a big, big vague word.

Can you be specific as I’m assuming you don’t think it’s hateful to prioritise the rights and dignity women who have experienced sexual violence? And you don’t think it’s hateful for a woman who has the money, clout and balls to put her head above the parapet on behalf of many women who don’t have the same privilege, to fiercely protect those rights?

I’m also assuming you recognise the stark difference between strong words such as those from JKR and the sort spouted by trans allies when protesting such as “Die in a grease fire “ and “Decapitate TERFS” and “The only good TERF is a dead one”? And that you are waiting patiently for the rise to turn against such poison as well?
