GUM clinic asked for gender.....

OverlyFragrant · 05/09/2025 22:45

Had reason to visit a GUM clinic today, the booking in form asked for my gender, nothing about sex, just gender.
So I did what I always do when asked such stupid questions and chose the 'prefer not to disclose' option and handed back in to reception.
The poor woman then asked me if I meant to select that option.
It wasnt the time or the place to announce my disbelief in gender, or gender identity, so just said quite firmly "yeah".
I'm quite obviously a woman, with problems unique to the female sex.
Why on earth isn't that more relevant than my gender at a sex clinic of all places?

So you don’t think anyone has the right to PNTS? Why? Why should people put a gender they don’t identify with on an official form?

Where did I say that! I absolutely do think that people should be able to, but OP did this out of pettiness. Further down the thread she goes on to say ‘stupid question will get a stupid answer’. She didn’t do this because she isn’t female or she doesn’t identify as female, or she actually prefers not to say - she actually doesn’t believe people should be able to not say.

This whole mixing up of gender and sex is ridiculous they are two separate things its just because when people think of "sex" they are thinking of the act its ridiculous get a grip

No thats not what I believe at all.
Do fuck off with your assertions though.

To be fair it’s only on the last ten/fifteen years or so that gender has not meant sex. Historically it was just a politer way to say it. Perhaps it’s an old form with a PNTS option bolted on?

The last time I went to a GUM clinic they dealt with it by asking if you were male or female, and if your gender was different to your birth sex. Very nice and straight forward, and presumably helps weed out people who’d otherwise be misleading about their sex and wasting the doctors and nurses’ time going down the wrong treatment path.

What I can't figure out is why it's only supposed to be British women who should have a stiff upper lip, rather than those claiming to be the wrong sex and having epic meltdowns and claiming they will die because they have been asked for their sex.

Never said to this bunch though:

The absolute state of this thread is special.

You need to read it for yourselves to see the level at which far too many individuals have got to, because they havent been told to belt up and just get on with it instead of being affirmed mindlessly.

This is the consequences of years of promoting no debate and affirmative only approaches.

Wow!

The need for total capitulation from everyone so as not to hurt their special feelings is strong in that poster.

I guess in my experience there's a women's clinic and a men's clinic. Both sexes don't queue up in the same place. So if you're in the women's then it's a given you're female, so they ask gender to see if anyone is trans?
If not they should not bother asking it because your sex would be blatantly obvious?

Boiledbeetle · 06/09/2025 12:02

Theunamedcat · 06/09/2025 10:56

Are you seriously not understanding that it is necessary for medical staff to know your sex before treatment? You realise men and women differ on more than just the physical level right?

Hows think transwomen are actually women and that we are all conspiracy theorists for saying they are men so...

Interestingly, the clinic i go has 2 different areas, male and female, but a single check in and waiting area. I was sat next to a chap in work overalls and a toolbox at his feet, and staring at posters for Men's Health Month.
I was correctly called through to the female section by a female nurse, so clearly my sex is recorded somewhere even if they didn't ask for it.

Arghh...I'd find it cringe sitting next to blokes in the queue for the STI clinic. I'm glad my one is totally seperate.

I dont.
I'm just happy they're taking their health seriously, nothing to embarrassed about at all.

I know there's nothing to be ashamed of. Maybe I'm being childish. I guess I did feel shame when my abuser gave me something many years ago. I shouldn't and you're right.

Am I the only one that thinks it’s a tad OTT to select ‘prefer not to say’ out of pettiness? This particular selection (male, female, PNTS) has been on the questionnaires since I’ve been a teenager, perhaps even longer - it is not new. What exactly has upset you about this to lead you to believe that it was a stupid question? Is it not fit for a GUM clinic to know what gender you are? Or is it as simple as using the word gender instead of sex?

On medical questionnaires?

Because it is a stupid question, especially in a medical setting where sex is important. Medical staff do need to know your sex. PTNS is stupid in this case

CatAsstrophe · 06/09/2025 16:39

It's not petty to tick 'PNTS'.

I am 'gender atheist'. To me, gender doesn't exist. Should I just tick the gender box that aligns with my sex just to appease people who do believe in made up bullshit gender? What about my beliefs? Do I just let go of them, when a completely different rules applies to others who scream and wail, and claim deep distress when being 'misgendered' as thought it's the most traumatic event in their life?

Sex matters. Even more so in a health care setting. It's about time the NHS and other other health care providers/settings removed the irrelevant gender question and replaced it with the relevant one - 'What is your sex? Male. Female'

'Nick' names are problematic in medical/hospital settings because they have to constantly check whether its 'you' before they give out meds or perform surgery so I can understand the confusion using different names.

Not a problem at all, if the system is simply willing to believe what the customer tells them. Then, they write the correct information on their records: If, according to your wish, you are always called 'Bunny Jones', they will give the meds to you.
Importantly, they will if necessary revive you from anaesthetic with "Mrs. Jones? Bunny? Wake up now Mrs. Jones. Can you hear me, Bunny, can you speak to me Bunny?" For those in a fuddled semi-awake state, it is bad nursing to expect a response from someone who iagainst her wishes has been recorded by the hospital as being " Beryl Vanessa Smith", merely because some other documents still carry that name, and because officials respect only people's documents, but not those people themselves.

(This, to an absurd extent, where a female could not get medical records corrected, as staff flatly refused to believe a large chunk of someone else's information had been included, for instance as a lifelong skinny teetotaler, she was recorded as having had hospital admissions for drink and overweight, and on protesting, she was told "Oh, but you must have forgotten being in hospital. People do you know"! That chunk of false information would have stayed as her 'true' health record forever. The staff were only forced to back down, when shown that one of the mis--filed pages, very luckily, detailed some treatment for prostate!)

Waitingfordoggo · 06/09/2025 22:52

I don’t see why there is a PNTS option here- one’s sex is vital information at a GUM clinic, surely?

They could put on the form:

Sex: male/female
Gender identity: male/female/NB/other/prefer not to say/NA

And then those of us who are gender atheists could answer NA or just ignore the question altogether.

Though I do realise some trans people would answer the first question incorrectly because their passport or other official documents have the incorrect sex marker on them. India Willoughby, for example, who insists he is female because his passport says so.
