If only there were some kind of word to predict or describe the people who might have periods to better study this phenomenon.

Absolutely. I'm sure there used to be a word. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?

It would certainly be useful when sharing information about health and biology.

ViciousCurrentBun · 01/09/2025 09:16

I bought The Guardian for about 25 years, I wouldn’t line my cat’s litter tray with it now.

Yes my sister had this with her work.

Breast cancer awareness day was all about people.

Prostate cancer awareness day was all about men.

Sickening.

But men do get breast cancer, I think it's like 400 men a year, so tiny, but the majority of them are later stages because they don't check those areas, or aren't thinking about it. Obviously it's still majority women, and that should be highlighted, but there should be some slight pointing out to men that they could get it, so maybe they'll check more etc.

This is one of the reasons that it's important that we use clear, neutral language for breasts, and don't confuse things by suggesting that breasts denote femininity and chests masculinity.

An additional note / section to suggest eg. 0.0001% of men in the whole male uk population can get breast cancer, so they need to check too, would suffice I should think.

0.8% of diagnosed cases are male but that’s not quite the same.

Well it’s just another example of men’s needs being more important / visible than ours. Nothing new.

MotherofPufflings · 01/09/2025 09:36

And of course saying "people" get breast cancer isn't really because some men get it too - it's to stop the blue-haired alphabet folx having a tantrum

HappyNewTaxYear · 01/09/2025 09:37

FFS

Further evidence that trans ideology is all about the menz.

NotNatacha · 01/09/2025 09:37

Sorry - wrong FWR thread.
That's my fault for having several screens open at once.

Exactly

SionnachRuadh · 01/09/2025 09:52

Quite. Peter Criss, the former drummer in Kiss, is a breast cancer survivor. He's a man's man, so if you wanted a male celebrity to raise awareness, he'd be great at that.

But I don't think that's what the blue fringes have in mind.

Yep my work do this too. Enraging. I will eventually say something as the hypocrisy is what gets me about it. They had a thing on our internal comms about getting feedback from "people on maternity leave". The words woman, women or female were not mentioned once.

I went into their policies and OF COURSE the information about paternity leave said man, men, fathers. Enraging.

WaryCrow · 01/09/2025 10:07

OOh, yes, I wonder how quickly they will be calling for more female teachers to support poor white girls now that the exam results have changed in favour of boys. Or whether we'll see all the horror about the masculinisation of education. What we should be seeing is horror at the masculinisation of work and destruction of the economic value of traditionally female roles, but clearly, we won't. I should start my own thread on this but, being female, I have to work and don't have the time to keep it up.

C152 · 01/09/2025 10:13

The Guardian is a notoriously sexist/misogynist paper. I used to read it regularly until it became impossible to ignore the number of 'articles' attacking women.

Catiette · 01/09/2025 10:13

MotherofPufflings · 01/09/2025 07:07

Even the introduction to the research paper in question begins "Chronic pain is more common in individuals assigned female at birth than in individuals assigned male.1"

Ffs.

Well, they should assign us all male, then, shouldn't they? I mean, Duh! What are they up to, condemning us all to a higher likelihood of chronic pain when they could have avoided it. Honestly! Grr.

assign verb [T] (CHOOSE)

to give a particular job or piece of work to someone: [ + two objects ] UN troops were assigned the task of rebuilding the hospital. The case has been assigned to our most senior officer.

If you assign a time for a job or activity, you decide it will be done during that time: Have you assigned a day for the interviews yet?

If you assign a characteristic or value to something, you say that it has it: Each visitor to the site chooses an online alter ego, which is assigned a name.

particular

1. special, or this and not any other: 2. especially: 3. not easily satisfied…

NapoleonsToe · 01/09/2025 10:18

The Guardian should just rename itself The Misogynist.

I was listening to a podcast yesterday about a miscarriage of justice in the US. Part of of the evidence related to the victim of the crime - a girl - and whether she used pads or tampons. The lawyer speaking said 'we have 2 people familiar with periods in our office so I asked them'. So not only are we just people now, we're just people who are familiar with periods.

LeftieRightsHoarder · 01/09/2025 10:18

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/09/2025 07:09

I imagine it's because trans women see womanhood as an exclusive club they want to belong to whereas trans men see it as an oppressive prison they want to escape from, so neither are happy about the term "women" being used in a biological sense.

The same doesn't appear to be true the other way round, when talking about men.

What an interesting point, thanks MissScarlett. It’s exactly how I felt when I was approaching puberty. Horrified at the boring drudging restricted life that awaited me as a woman. Then Women’s Liberation happened and the future was transformed. How sad that girls face the opposite now: a movement to reduce women’s rights and liberties.

Hoardasurass · 01/09/2025 10:20

littlbrowndog · 01/09/2025 00:52

But they do mention women and girls later on the article. You need to read it properly

The only times women and girls are mentioned specifically is when the drs and minister are being directly quoted. The rest of the article (ie the bits the journalist wrote) its all young people and as adults, its a disgraceful attempt at erasing women and girls imho

Hoardasurass · 01/09/2025 10:24

Ponderingwindow · 01/09/2025 01:03

@NotNatacha has summarized the problem perfectly. If the population is not defined, the results do not have the same meaning.

Bit like the article about 75% of people getting thrush in their lifetime when the study quoted said 75% of women

Kate8889 · 01/09/2025 10:34

I have XO karyotype and have periods. Some people wouldn't consider me a woman, I've been told that quite a few times, yet I do have a period.

By definition, Turner syndrome only affects women.

Petitchat · 01/09/2025 10:39

BettyBooper · 01/09/2025 00:48

Periods effect men too! Especially, mostly and very much! They are most effected by something that only effects women!

Jeez you're such a bigoty bigoty face and you eat children for breakfast.

So sad.

Think about what you have done. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

🤣 🤣 🤣

Petitchat · 01/09/2025 10:42

deadpan · 01/09/2025 06:49

Exactly, if it was about men's prostate problems they wouldn't be referring to "people".

Or premature ejaculation!

Petitchat · 01/09/2025 10:44

Absentmindedsmile · 01/09/2025 07:01

Why bother with English lessons, when basic Biology is still misunderstood..

I don't think it's misunderstood. I think it's blatant lies!

Hoardasurass · 01/09/2025 10:24

Bit like the article about 75% of people getting thrush in their lifetime when the study quoted said 75% of women

… which means that’s about 38% of the population (as women are a little over 50% of the population, except in countries where they manage to kill us off through infanticide or misogynistic practices).

So the article on that subject was not just misleading but deliberately and massively inaccurate. Brilliant journalism!
