MP doesn’t understand how laws are made.

Norwich South MP Clive Lewis has written to Bridget Phillipson, Minister for Women & Equalities demanding that he MPs be allowed to tamper with, delay & derail “scrutinise” the EHRC guidance on the Supreme Court judgment.

It’s alarming an MP apparently doesn’t realise that the law is scrutinised when MPs pass it.

He’a getting a lot of pushback, and a Community Note. Over 1.5k replies, almost all negative, and from people like Labour Women’s Declaration, Rosie Duffield MP, Tom Harris, Lesbian Labour & For Women Scotland, who brought the case in the first place.

He has replied to ONE comment, & it’s by a bloke.

I knew this would be Clive Lewis. He’s an absolute fuckwit and always has been.

theilltemperedmaggotintheheartofthelaw · 27/08/2025 14:30

FFS. Parliament debated then passed a law. Supreme Court interpreted it. EHRC asked everybody to comment on their draft guidance. How could it have been more transparent???

Edited to delete tasteless suggestion that he might be blackmailable. I'm sure he's lovely, just an idiot.

Kucinghitam · 27/08/2025 14:59

Yet another TRSOHer high on his own Righteous farts then.

JanesLittleGirl · 27/08/2025 15:01

Is Clive not aware that the guidance will be laid before both houses of Parliament for 40 days following ministerial approval and only becomes official if neither house votes to disapprove it during that time?

CarefulN0w · 27/08/2025 15:06

Wow. Is it me or is that a particularly graceless letter to a senior Government Minister? It reads like he is telling her off. Would he use the same tone to David Lammy, I wonder?

Merrymouse · 27/08/2025 15:10

I don't think he understands the process well enough to even help the people he claims to be trying to support.

Nothing is stopping him from campaigning to change the law through the correct democratic processes.

RedNine · 27/08/2025 15:14

It is cringe, isn't it.

Floisme · 27/08/2025 15:20

Aha so now he wants a debate, does he? Funny that.

Toseland · 27/08/2025 15:28

Aha so now he wants a debate, does he? Funny that.

Now they want nuanced debate, proper scrutiny and discussions in Parliament. Amazing.

BundleBoogie · 27/08/2025 16:07

What a grim little man.

He really really doesn’t want women to have anything for ourselves - like our words or spaces.

DworkinWasRight · 27/08/2025 16:20

It is kind of amazing, not just that some of our MPs are ignorant of basic things like how laws are made, but that they choose to advertise their ignorance publicly. I would feel embarrassed in his position, but perhaps some people don't even understand that they're ignorant, and therefore can't be embarrassed by it.

theilltemperedmaggotintheheartofthelaw · 27/08/2025 16:24

TRAs are actively lobbying MPs eg see link, in the hope of getting a parliamentary debate.

https://www.transsolidarityalliance.com/ehrc-code

I think they don't expect to win, but to raise awareness and run a few 'MPs vote to abolish trans rights'-type headlines.

(Obviously, by raising awareness I don't mean actually telling anyone what it all means in reality.)

Merrymouse · 27/08/2025 16:31

Are Clive Lewis and others under the impression that if they influence the EHRC's guidance they will have changed the law?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/08/2025 16:31

More evidence of how this ideology turns everyone who champions it into fools. Tho perhaps Lewis already held that label?

deadpan · 27/08/2025 17:02

Lewis is great on the climate but away with the fairies on this. He supported the bloke "feeding" his baby oestrogen liquid from his chest, when Rosie Duffield complained to ITN about featuring him on a news item. Calling anyone who objected the usual slurs.

JulesJules · 27/08/2025 17:09

God, what an uninformed idiot he is.

Quite apart from his seeming ignorance regarding how parliament and the law work, why can these men never ever see anything from the point of view of women who make up more than half of his constituents and the population.

He quite obviously cannot see or hear anything that women say. Is it our very high voices 🤷‍♀️

plantcomplex · 27/08/2025 17:09

What's the community note say?

What's the community note say?

There are three proposed notes:

MP doesn’t understand how laws are made.

Which makes it very difficult for people to trust him on climate change.

How can he accuse anyone else of science denialism?

Mollyollydolly · 27/08/2025 17:32

He's had 1.7K replies, mostly from women. He's replied to one man. Keep tweeting Clive you do our work for us.
