Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Excellent Guardian article in my view. It seems that some biological women are being challenged in same sex changing rooms/loos.

Personally I am grateful for the bloke who politely stopped me going into the men's pub toilet. I've been bemused but not offended that someone mistook me for a man, because there's nothing bad about being a man.

But having discussed this on another forum I "don't speak for all women". It's clear we need to make all changing rooms etc. mixed sex to prevent any biological women being mistaken for men.

No, it isn’t.

Just to redress the balance my fella was misgendered in Tesco a few months ago. He has a nonconforming hairstyle. He just laughed about it, didn't even record an angry tiktok in his car. At the very least he could have made a contemporaneous note on his mobile!

Sad times.

Exactly. The only people who give a shit about being misgendered are the people who actually have a 'gender identity" or an agenda. The vast majority of people could not care less because they're not lying to themselves or tryign to force others to lie about them.

MarieDeGournay · 12/08/2025 15:44

Old news, Guardian, old news.
These incidents have been reported, analysed and shown not to be about 'nasty toxic GC women spitting at butch lesbians in the women's toilets' at all.
One is about a man shouting at a woman, the other is...well, who knows?

It's an indication that the 'nasty toxic GC women spitting at butch lesbians in the women's toilets' thing isn't really happening, because if it was, the media would have lots of new cases to report instead of re-hashing the same 'incidents'.

StopTheWorld1WantToGetOff · 12/08/2025 18:22

I’m not sure I believe all of those stories, but assuming they are true, the reason more people will be being challenged is because there’s been an assault on women’s spaces by men deciding they are women, and dressing up as women, to access their spaces. If that assault hadn’t happened, women wouldn’t have their guard up in women’s spaces and would be much less likely to feel concerned that a masculine looking woman was a man trying to access a woman’s space.. A decade or so ago, she would have been given the benefit of the doubt. However, attacked people tend to be more defensive.

I was a bit suspicious that the very feminine-looking wife of JoMo and mother of two trans children tweeted in April that she was worried that she'd be challenged in the changing rooms following the SC ruling, and lo and behold this happened to her in May! And she's in the Guardian today talking about what appears to be the same incident but in July.

Don't think I ever looked up the appearance of Mrs Maugham. I don't imagine anyone in the world has ever mistaken her for a man.

Exactly. If men stopped trying to get into women’s toilets then this wouldn’t happen (if it did at all). Women have their guard up, and rightly so. I don’t care if I’m missexed

LeftieRightsHoarder · 12/08/2025 22:42

So abusive men are a reason for women not to have spaces away from men?

Yes, that’s about the standard of logic we expect from the Guardian these days.

I’m not sure that’s a great solution. Unisex changing is turning up some very difficult situations eg https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/c195cb814c34cf61

What are the chances that Clare Maugham has been mis-gendered and challenged twice in the pool changing room? More likely that this dross was filed a few months ago and has only just surfaced for some reason (maybe to fill space because everyone is away on holiday?).
Here's an article from last year by the same friend journalist with one of the Maugham children (Grin). Guardian article

‘I’ve had to become my own doctor’: trans young people on life after the Cass review

With puberty blockers now banned in much of the UK, those hoping for gender treatment say they have been forced into difficult decisions

Silly season has always been silly season, but it is interesting that they don't have anything new to update this with.

Wilberpaws · 13/08/2025 09:05

As a women attracted to butch women, I find this deeply frustrating. I've long wondered why the dating apps are full of unlikely Asian 20somethings and men called Fleur. And this is the answer I suppose - all the butch women are stuck in public toilet queues.

I wouldn't hang around toilets looking for them though. That would just be weird. 🫠

LittleBitofBread · 13/08/2025 09:28

I wondered why Caz whatsit's name seemed familiar.
How embarrassing, recycling stories.

BettyBooper · 13/08/2025 09:49

Dogsrbrill · 12/08/2025 14:15

That's a silly argument for mixed sex facilities

Yes, yes it is. I gather that was the point 🤣.

Women might be mistaken for men and assaulted by men
Men might feel sad
Men might feel afraid of men
Men might assault other men

All very silly arguments for letting men into women's toilets.

Phew. It was less obvious to me than usual - I pride myself on my sarcasm detector, but it was malfunctioning and i was unsure!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 13/08/2025 10:28

These stories were reported months ago.

Does anyone actually believe they are true?

I don't.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 13/08/2025 10:31

I feel sorry for Claire Prihartini, who has probably been bullied by her odious husband into exploiting her own breast cancer for his political agenda.

lanadelgrey · 13/08/2025 10:32

As I always say, it is worth dropping a letter to the guardian

BackToLurk · 12/08/2025 14:51

It's horrific that the misgenderers are mercilessly targetting women who oppose the SC ruling.

Yes, isn't that a curious coincidence.

I certainly hope we see more women challenging gender stereotypes.

FriedGold32 · 13/08/2025 11:15

Sorry, are we meant to believe that Mrs Maugham looks in even the slightest bit male?

The Guardian is asking me to believe that this woman:

was mistaken for a man?

What a terrible thing to happen to her! Whoever will be misgendered next for looking dead blokey? Margot Robbie perhaps? Kim Kardashian? Barbie?

I should probably have gone for something more outrageous for mixed everything than changing rooms as some of those are single cubicle.

My gym changing is open plan and includes young teens.

I do wonder if you can tell who does and does not have a "gender identity", including "cis" by how they feel to being (politely) misidentified.

The bit about being told I don't speak for all women holds to claims you should never question anyone's sex.

I also wonder how many of these incidents are in London and much of the trauma is from being spoken to by a stranger!

Yes - somehow we're supposed to believe that these women, whose unifying gender non-conforming trait seems to be 'short hair' have experienced this so often, yet we're also supposed to believe that various prominent trans women who pass as well as a camel might at a shetland pony club have been using women's toilets for years unclocked.
