A while ago I caught a podcast interview with Angela White, who probably genuinely is the biggest name in porn, and has been for years. It was an interesting contrast - I stress at the beginning that I'm not holding up AW as some kind of exemplar.
I know appearances can deceive, but the superficial differences are very striking. In conversation AW comes across as relatively normal. She smiles and jokes. She certainly makes good money, but she's not constantly bragging about her earnings.
More substantially, AW said that she's always been into pretty kinky stuff, and her work allows her to do that in a curated, relatively safe manner. She's working for studios, with guys who have been vetted and tested, and there are crew on hand in case anything goes wrong. This, she says, is a lot safer than hooking up with random guys from the internet.
My general impression of AW was - this is a woman who's highly intelligent, rational, has a shrew business sense and also knows that she's in a grubby business and needs to take care of her safety. That probably accounts for her longevity, having been doing this for 20 years.
The one point of similarity seems to be an unusual ability to dissociate sex from emotion. That's common among women in porn, and we might speculate about reasons for it. But, even though AW has done some extreme stuff that I have no interest in seeing, I can't imagine her going in for the clickbait-grabbing dangerous stunts that BB does. She's too professional, if that makes sense.
I also don't believe AW has ever been gifted the front page of the Guardian, but there you go. Maybe BB has discovered the old Malcolm McLaren rule that, if you say it's a cynical grift, you render yourself critic proof.
