A woman in her 40s and 2 children shot dead. Man in hospital with gunshot wounds. Police not looking for anyone else.
It will never end.
Just devastating for their family.

It’s awful. Although I’m not sure I understand why the police are saying they do not anticipate making any arrests. If they suspect the adult male, who is currently in hospital, of the murders then he would be arrested?

Stripeyanddotty · 23/07/2025 20:25

I think he is critically injured.

Those poor children and their mother. Another tragedy caused by another abusive male.

ARichtGoodDram · 23/07/2025 20:38

Yet again another woman murdered who'd already had contact with the police over domestic abuse (coyly called "domestic incidents" in the report).

bajanasinpajamas · 23/07/2025 20:40

welcome to Northern Ireland. A long and proud history of domestic abuse being brushed under the carpet.

IwantToRetire · 23/07/2025 20:56

This research paper is from 2013, and not much has changed since then.

And it certainly isn't just Northern Ireland.

It is global.

The moment the woman approached police, as has been reported she did, the bastard should have been stripped of his firearms straightaway. Can't understand why this isn't automatic and immediate.

NameChangedOfc · 23/07/2025 21:24

It never ends... God, I hate this.
May their souls rest in peace.

It isn't just NI by any means, but NI has one of the highest rates of femicide in Europe.

The police knew he had firearms?? Those poor souls, I hate this. I don't understand why they weren't confiscated.

AInightingale · 24/07/2025 00:15

Unless they were illegal ones that the PSNI didn't know about @jacksonlambsregulardisorder, it is outrageous.

I cant find it but there was a thread a while ago about a report that a woman had written about how the legacy of the Troubles contributed to violence against women.

But as I cant find it I cant quote the research it was based on. Does anyone else remember it?

Although I am not aware of any studies looking at the instances of family annihilation in various countries. I thought that this was more likely to be the US.

AInightingale · 24/07/2025 02:59

I think part of the problem is that many NI working class communities are still paramilitary-dominated and there is a reluctance to involve police in domestic or other matters (assaults, anti social behaviour and so on). So DV escalates behind closed doors in a lot of cases.

Men who are paramilitaries are also frequently abusers of women and children themselves. There are also cases of men who leave prison for these offences paying the local gangs protection money so they can move back into their communities. It all stinks.

SisterTeatime · 24/07/2025 03:10

DV is also correlated with terrorist offences in general, just one more reason why it ought to be taken much more seriously as part of a wider societal pattern of dangerous male violence and not a ‘domestic’ matter at all.

HumphreyCushionintheHouse · 24/07/2025 04:51

Sorry if Im being slow here. Who is the shooter in relation to the Mother and Children?

Absolutely tragic and terrifying for the victims.

cariadlet · 24/07/2025 05:43

Such a tragedy and it sounds as though it could have been prevented. That poor woman and children.

When the initial reports came out of 3 people being dead and a 4th injured, before any details were released, I knew it would be a family annihilator situation.

The more of these cases that you read about, the more you come to expect it. Police often seem to seek to reassure the public by saying that they aren't looking for anyone else or that it's an isolated case.

But these aren't isolated cases. There's an epidemic of male violence and women and children are the victims.

i hope it is horribly painful. Awfuly horribly painful and a long and drawn-out suffering. And then recovery and arrest.

He'll get 2 years on probabtion or something.

ArabellaScott · 24/07/2025 10:00

RIP to the mother and her children. Damn.

I'm assuming he is the father. She has been named locally. Don't want to link here but search 'Belfast Telegraph' for details. She worked as a vet and the children were teenagers, a boy and girl. And of course the phrase 'mental health' is already being bandied in relation to their killer.

Because women don't matter and are not listened to. Especially by the police.

This just keeps on happening
Sickening
Poor woman and her children

caramac04 · 24/07/2025 11:54

He just couldn’t be satisfied with shooting his own miserable self but murdered his own children and their mother. I truly despair at the so frequent incidents of violence against women.
This woman and her children have paid the price for the murderers insecurity.

To legally hold a firearm in the UK you have to apply for a certificate from your local police so yep the police can check.
