Why why why can't Mumsnet Towers reinstate the Laugh reaction just on FWR where we are sensible enough not to misuse it and also have the most need.

Suggestions will surely approve as they are rather fond of Freemartins!

Important not to confuse these with Bumba's expertise although they do sound similar

Where is the slide about cows and milk and bills not making milk?

I am showing my philistine ways, but sadly, I don't know many Ricky Martin songs. 😟

I'd heard of freemartins, but only in sci-fi as a convenient way of creating responsibility-free bedmates for the men central to the story. I had no idea that they were a real phenomenon in cattle, and not just an expression of misogynistic patriarchy.

This is part of an A level biology exam question, from the current spec.
I have fun explaining to students who don't get it why milking a bull is not advisable.

The semen of prize dairy bulls may be collected for in vitro fertilisation. The sperms in the semen can be separated so that all the calves produced are of the same sex. The two kinds of sperms differ by about 3% in DNA content.
(i) Explain what causes the sperms of one kind to have 3% more DNA than sperms of the other kind.
(ii) Suggest one reason why farmers would want the calves to be all of the same sex.

PennyAnnLane · 16/07/2025 22:09

I wouldn’t fancy trying to get a cheek swab from that bull!

😧Whatever happened to when a Daddy bull and a Mummy cow love each other very very much... ?😃

The only thing that will help me cope with some of our more obtuse trolls is Eye-roll face. 🙄

Ooh, I'd never thought about that. Is it a centrifuge job, or something a bit more technical?

Yellowbirdcage · 17/07/2025 04:56

Interesting about the DNA. I googled the human DNA equivalent question and according to Reddit (yes I know) men have about 55 more genes due to having the Y chromosome but women have the 2nd copy of the X which has about 900-1400 genes so have about 0.03% more DNA in total.

We are definitely not as dimorphic as cattle anyway. I feel other animals may have been better examples for the illustration. What about those women spiders that are so much bigger they eat their mate? Maybe lions are analogous to humans. The males are just a bit bigger and more hairy and aggressive.

Yellowbirdcage · 17/07/2025 04:59

Anyway I do have B/G twins so those Freemartins are so interesting! My girl may have been affected by all that boy soup she was living in for 9 months and vice versa. They seem OK though 😁
