Did anybody watch this recent two part documentary on Channel 4? It covers this case https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgeq2xyqeldo.amp

It was so shocking. There were so many victims of this man, with potentially more who haven't come forward or who aren't aware what has been done to them. The level of misogyny of this man is absolutely sickening. But he only got ten years in prison. He pleaded guilty to 4 charges, including one of rape and one of voyeurism. It is such a pathetic sentence for the level of harm he has caused.

And unless more charges are brought, he will potentially be walking the streets again in ten years.

Yes, I watched it and was flabbergasted by the sentence. But I did think it was needlessly graphic in some parts.

LoopyGremlin · 10/07/2025 09:03

I watched it and could not believe the sentence. Could be out in 5 years- abhorrent.

Yes, I agree. Those poor women 😞 I honestly just can't believe how horrific this case was and how lenient a sentence he got.

It's a disgraceful fact that a rapist will get a shorter sentence if the victim is female.

We really are just on this earth to serve men.

GenerousGardener · 10/07/2025 09:21

What happened to part one? Didn’t watch part 2 as I could t find part 1.

Thepersianrice · 10/07/2025 09:22

It was absolutely shocking and I really hoped the women involved didn’t feel they had to consent to this footage being shown on tv to be believed. I’m not sure anyone in the immediate aftermath of such an incident is best placed to make such a decision. Nevertheless they were very brave.
It did occur to me that growing up in the nineties I probably encountered a few men like this, older guys scouting nightclubs for young women, that we probably considered to be quite cool and friendly but had nefarious intentions. It’s good that culture has shifted from blaming women to taking them seriously. It did make me think there are probably so many more men like this , if I encountered several in my small town growing up, just that technology and attitudes have changed, thankfully.

@ItsCoolForCats thanks. I couldn’t find it
on my recordings on Virgin Media and it’s set to record every episode. Strange.

ItsCoolForCats · 10/07/2025 09:27

The first victim who came forward was so brave. You could see how utterly broken she was. And they wouldn't have discovered the scale of his crimes if she hadn't spoken out. My heart broke for the woman who said maybe she would rather have not been told as she will never trust men again

I wonder if they accepted his guilty plea of one charge of rape because a jury might somehow think some of the women consented, even though they were so drunk they were unconscious or barely conscious. Our justice system is really failing these women.

He'll potentially be walking the streets in five years, one suspects. You don't serve the whole sentence for anything that doesn't result in national infamy these days.

AnnaMagnani · 10/07/2025 09:29

I was sadly not shocked by the sentence- he continued to manipulate and so pleaded guilty to get the benefit of the sentence reduction.

The police strategy is then to bring as many extra charges as possible once he is in prison to get him extra, hopefully longer, sentences.

They can also take their time in preparing them as they don't have the time pressure of him being on remand - it's not as if he is going anywhere.

SeriouslyStressed · 10/07/2025 09:30

One of the most enraging parts was how his friends and family were laughing at photos of bloodstained sheets and unconscious women that he was sharing with them, encouraging him! Apparently even his mum laughed at his behaviour

MoominUnderWater · 10/07/2025 09:30

I hope they manage to charge him with more stuff and get his sentence increased now.

caramac04 · 10/07/2025 09:32

I found the viciousness of his rapes really difficult to hear about.
I was disgusted but not surprised that a male relative praised the rapist for his utterly callous treatment of a helpless young woman but totally shocked that the relatives mother thought it was funny.
Had I seen that footage I would have reported it to the police. What sort of person supports such a vile action?

Not for sex offenders.

The parole board are unsurprisingly risk averse.

It's difficult to see how he would convincingly demonstrate risk reduction earlier.

Plus of course he's almost certainly going to rack up additional convictions.

This was what I couldn't get over. His crimes were so dreadful and his own mother thought they were funny. I just can't wrap my head around that.

Whitehorses67 · 10/07/2025 09:40

This piece of scum had been behaving like this all his life. He was expelled from school because of sexually assaulting fellow pupils.
I think boys showing seriously deviant sexual behaviour at this stage need to be monitored in a scheme along the lines of Prevent but for sex offenders.
He is never going to change who he is. Serial sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated in fact they tend to escalate their crimes and perversions.
Surely anyone can see that men like this need to be permanently imprisoned for public safety?
Prison sentencing is utter madness.
The court initially wanted to give him bail ffs.
Those laughing and encouraging him via texts should have been prosecuted as accessories.

ItsCoolForCats · 10/07/2025 09:45

Completely agree with comments about his relatives laughing about the videos. What the hell is wrong with these people?

OP posts:
AnnaMagnani · 10/07/2025 09:46

I am guessing, given his mum thought the video was funny despite knowing that he had been expelled from school, that his family had normalised sexual abuse at home.

The little snippets about his family life were horrifying.

I was wondering if/hoping that the people on the group chat would also have charges brought against them, although I'm not sure what

Is it an offense to not report something like that? Or to encourage it?

TimeForATerf · 10/07/2025 09:46

I’m also shocked at his extended family laughing at the footage, especially since they will have been aware that he was expelled from school for sexualised behaviour. To comment “this looks like a rape scene” and laugh?

WTAF is classed as normal behaviour in that family and what other skeletons are in their cupboards.

Edited

There were so many red flags. It was good to hear the police officer say that exposure is now taken more seriously as a crime due to Wayne Cousens and a better understanding that it often escalates.

And yes, he will never be rehabilitated or change how he views women, which is why I find it so terrifying that he could be released again in a decade or less. Hopefully pp are right, and the priority was to get him in prison and then bring more charges.

I'd be happy to be wrong.

(Edit: although with the continuous bleating about there being insufficient prison spaces, I have my doubts)

ShoeeMcfee · 10/07/2025 09:51

I also agree that there's something not right at the heart of his family - I wonder if SS should investigate or is it too late now?

AnnaMagnani · 10/07/2025 11:00

A large part of the reason for there being no prison spaces is longer sentences for sex offenders who then don't get parole.

I've never seen anyone get released on their first parole. It takes years of reassessment.
