Pronouns in work signatures- how do I stop it?

My employer has just mentioned they want people to start putting pronouns in email signatures. They have said it isn't mandatory. My question is, should I contact management to explain why this isn't a good idea, and if so, what sources can I provide?
Thanks all
(Hope i posted this in the right place)

What are the issues around having a different name for work than outside work (I find myself wondering). You might be "Jane Doe" in everyday life, but when you get to your desk you become "John Doe" for the purposes of work ?

If you can choose your pronouns then why not chose your name instead ?

(This is merely refining existing practices where some customer facing staff get assigned fake names for their own safety anyway).

If you fight wire with fire, you fight bollocks with bollocks surely ?

My husband works for a big company and he's received a few emails saying something similar, he's just ignored them all.

I think this wave is over

Yeah there are a few he/himmers in my organisation. Basically almost all the grads/new-in-career kids, and some of the key players higher up in HR and UK country leadership.

I won't be joining them, my gender identity has nothing at all to do with work, and I'm keeping it to myself.

FWIW I use my abbreviated name at work, always have done - it's in my email address and every single other work identifier. Almost nobody knows that my real name is quite a bit longer.

I think it's interesting that in the Sandy Peggie employment tribunal the fact that IB's email signature included "LGBT ally", was noted by NC. The broader point NC is certain to be make is that TWs' desire to access women's sss's competes with women's rights, and that stating you're an "LGBT ally" (without so much as mentioning women or any other protected characteristic) implies that you're not impartial when adjudicating those rights in an organization and that puts the organization as a whole at risk to exactly the type of lawsuit NHS Fife finds itself in.

There's a difference between having "LGBT ally" in you signature and having pronouns since it could be argued that pronouns have some functional justification. But I don't think it's correct to think they are neutral. They obviously signal you subscribe to a very particular (and oftentimes activist) ideology. In this respect their inappropriateness is amplified when they are optional since it signals that people with GC beliefs (those without pronouns) shouldn't expect impartial treatment from those that do have them.

The Linzi Smith v Northumbria Police judgement could be quoted. If you embrace pronouns in emails you are possibly creating an environment which is perceived to be hostile to those with sex realist beliefs. If your employer has any sort of duty of impartiality this could be seen as demonstrating bias, certainly if it was ever made mandatory.

Ask if your pronouns can be Allahu Akbar.

I'll just get me coat ....

If its not mandatory, which of course it shouldn't be, just choose to do what you want ie if they hadn't sent the email what would you do? If they follow it up then you can explain that in your view it isn't necessary etc. Most people where I work don't bother and haven't been asked about it.

lissetteattheRitz · 17/07/2025 10:43

I work in a captured unit and some people put pronouns in signatures etc. Nothing has been said about it by HR but I'm sure post Peggie and also Linzi, HR depts across the land will move to more neutral ground - especially as the legal landscape is becoming clarified and it's going to become so darned expensive to get it wrong.

There are job cuts where I am so I'm lie low Lil as I need my job.
