Mimmymum blog is interesting too - now they no longer have the upper hand she is keen on independence and pluralism. I am keen on those things too and I think we are finally getting back to it.

This committee are awful.

The letter claims that they are concerned about her knowledge of race and disability, yet they spent the majority of time in the questions session talking about women and trans.

So surely if they were actually concerned about her experience or interest with race and disability, they would have spent more time asking her about it to tease out the information they were looking for?

That’s a very poor letter. Not written from a place of truth.

TRAs have organised an open letter calling on Bridget Phillipson not to approve Mary-Ann Stephenson. They have about 1000 signatures so far.

Do you think we should write to Bridget Phillipson in support of M-A S's selection? Do you think BP will pay any attention to either side?

I would almost be more tempted to write to her and say the letter from the EHRC has no foundation, as they totally failed in their task in adequately questioning her of the issue they no claim she does have sufficient knowledge.

And that is because they made the pre appointment event little more than an exercise in making trans issues the only issues to be concerned about, and they couldn't accept that it was as much a matter of free speech as being forced to say one interest over an other.

Their letter had not merit.

The TRAs think the committee are being very clever by not raising the trans issue in their letter. Time to get with the program guys, no more sneaking things in through the back door. Be honest about what you want and why! Let's see if it stands up to public scrutiny (spoiler alert: it won't).

MagicSexEssence · 20/07/2025 05:04

To add: I don't think there is any need to write to Bridget Phillipson about this. The SC judgement was extremely clear and the Labour Party have said that they accept the SC judgement. They would not appoint an EHRC chair who was not aligned with party beliefs/policy, it would be insanity.

I think Mary Ann Stephenson is probably as moderate as TRAs can hope for. I wonder how long it will be before she becomes more hardline in the face of the abuse she is going to receive.

WarriorN · 20/07/2025 06:56

Yes we are truly entering operation let them speak phase. I hope she’s been offered support in that area

No! I think the cabinet are in the mood for discipline right now and will not be swayed by letters from trans activists. I'm sure that Sex Matters and 'Legal Feminist', amongst others, have already made representations.

For anyone who witnessed that interview it was clear they were gunning for MAS right from the start. The hostility was palpable...and some conducted themselves in a very unprofessional and direspectful manner. By the end Helena Kennedy could see which way the wind was blowing and resorting to emotional plea bargaining.

It was a disgrace, quite frankly. The Letter provides very thin disguise for the committee's true intent.

Shortshriftandlethal · 20/07/2025 12:44

The TRAS are mostly livid that the imagined rights of trans identified people do not over-rule the protections and established rights of other protected groups. And MAS was conscious of this and made a point of saying so.

"George Orwell's Animal Farm, the phrase "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" highlights the corruption and hypocrisy of the ruling class. It appears as a revision of the original Seven Commandments of Animalism, specifically the final one stating, "All animals are equal". This twisted maxim encapsulates the pigs' abuse of power, as they use it to justify their privileges and oppression of other animals.

The phrase is not just a clever oxymoron, but a critical commentary on totalitarian regimes and the dangers of unchecked power. In the context of the novel, the pigs, initially leading the revolution, gradually consolidate control and exploit their position, demonstrating how easily revolutionary ideals can be corrupted. The phrase itself becomes a symbol of this betrayal, as the pigs, through their actions and the manipulation of language, create a society where they are above the law and the other animals.

The evolution of the Seven Commandments, culminating in this single, contradictory statement, reflects the pigs' gradual transformation from leaders to tyrants. Initially, the commandments were intended to ensure equality and justice for all animals. However, the pigs, led by Napoleon, rewrite and reinterpret these rules to suit their own needs, demonstrating their growing disregard for the original principles of Animalism"

I agree. I know it involves a devolved government, but I would hope Keir Starmer is keeping an eye on the absolute shitshow that is going up on in Fife, and takes it as a warning as to what can happen when organisations don't follow the law.

Thanks for the update.

I think it is good that it is in the public domain, well the Times.

With luck the DM will write a DM version tomorrow!

Have just seen this, so maybe in fact the article is just using the statement from Sex Matters?

Very good article:

"The charity also highlighted that Rachel Taylor, Labour MP and WEC member, had incorrectly asserted that the Supreme Court disagreed with the EHRC’s interim update on the implications of the Supreme Court judgment on the definition of sex.
She said: “The Supreme Court noted that the EHRC’s interim guidance or statement went beyond what the law required.”
The Supreme Court has made no such comment. In the transcript of the meeting a correction is marked saying Taylor was thinking about comments made by the former Supreme Court Judge Lord Sumption.
Sex Matters said that Lord Sumption has not commented on the EHRC’s interim update either. His only public commentary was made on BBC Radio 4, two days after the judgment, and before the interim update was published.
Unisex toilets
Baroness Kennedy, Labour peer and JCHR member, stated that there were no unisex toilets at Waterloo station and challenged Stephenson on what she would say to a trans woman who wanted to use the women’s toilets there.
Sex Matters pointed out that there are unisex toilets right next to both the male and female toilets at Waterloo station and that it was “extremely disappointing” that the committee asked questions which were not fact-checked."

Indeed...

Supreme Court: legal definition of woman based on biological sex

The Supreme Court has ruled that the legal definition of a woman under the Equality Act 2010 is based on biological sex.

I thought it interesting that Personnel Today thought it a relevant story for their readers.

There must be some personnel departments who are finding all of this a nightmare.

Trans pressure and women employees asking to their rights to be upheld.

Sad

Great article. Thanks for sharing @IwantToRetire.

Personnel Today seem to be taking an even handed stand.

And maybe it because feedback from personnel staff often left to sorty out the mixed messaging of virtual signalling management!

Bloody hell Personnel Today, that’s a bold article. Fair and interesting and inclusive. Bold in this climate though. Respect.

94% of the report’s respondents agree that all protected characteristics in the Equality Act should be treated equally

I wonder what the other 6% are about Confused

ItsCoolForCats · 26/07/2025 09:46

Tanya de Grunwald complained on X recently about HR publications not covering the Sandie Peggie case. So it's good Personnel Today is willing to publish articles on the sex/gender debate. And they have linked to an article about Sandie Peggie suing the RCN.

BellissimoGecko · 26/07/2025 09:52

That is a great article! Very refreshing.

IwantToRetire · 26/07/2025 17:17

I think the article is in fact written by someone from LGB Alliance who have a business forum (?) that has recently produced a handbook about work situations.

But still fantastic that Personnel Today have printed it.

I wonder how many complaints they will get?
