I see she is now claiming that she was never actually friends with Fry.

Link here: https://www.standard.co.uk/showbiz/jk-rowling-stephen-fry-friends-b1234360.html

In support of Fry, barrister Jo Maugham stated “Really creditable this, from Stephen Fry. I've spoken to so many of JKR's once friends who now despair at her privately but won't do so publicly, which is very much the British way and why nothing ever changes for the better. So well done Stephen.”

Now Casey Bloys, CEO of the network working on a new HP series, has felt the need to clarify on a podcast that the forthcoming series won't be infused with her controversial views, insisting that her views are entirely separate to the show they're making.

And, as one of the latest celebrities to decide to speak out, Boy George weighed in at the beginning of the month with a few observations of his own (see attached image).

So the question here, really, is just how long are certain people going to blindly insist that JKR is an infallible saint when the (increasing) evidence from multiple sources is to the contrary?

Yes, she has funded a lot of good and charitable works for women, that is not in question, but at what point do we as a society finally agree that a human being is not absolved of horrendous behaviour in one part of their life simply because they compensate for it by doing a few good works in another?

Or perhaps you disagree entirely with all her detractors and feel she is unfairly treated / misunderstood / misquoted?
I'd like to hear your views. They are guaranteed to create an interesting dialogue.

Agreed, but JKR has turned down a damehood and a seat in the Lords. I think she confirmed that herself.

I don't think Fry is clever. I think he has a retentive memory, takes direction, and within a quite narrow type-range can deliver what is wanted on stage or screen. The public persona is as much an act as what we see in roles.

If he was clever he'd be keeping his head down, not sticking his neck out.

True. It seems pretty thick for someone to wade in when they don't have to, and he appeared to have got away with not ostentatiously pledging fealty so far. Reminds me of the stuff with Simone Biles a couple of weeks ago. You just think, what are you hoping to achieve by this?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/06/2025 21:21

I think Fry, like Boris Johnson, is a good illustration of the 'performing seal' aspect of the public school system. Which is excellent at taking children who - while not stupid - are often of less than dazzling intelligence and teaching the trick of seeming considerably more clever than they are.

They learn the formal mechanisms of debate. They learn to memorise chunks of information in a way that allows immediate recall of apposite quotes and factoids so they seem informed when conversing on any subject. And they learn the confidence to use these tricks with an aplomb that will fool those not looking too closely.

But they don't learn real thought, intellectual curiosity, or deep understanding. Which leads to things like Johnson reciting Road to Mandalay on an official visit to Myanmar because it was contextually appropriate (keyword match) but failing to realise it was culturally and diplomatically disastrous.

DeanElderberry · 24/06/2025 21:32

Very well put @NoBinturongsHereMate .

RedToothBrush · 24/06/2025 21:39

Full credit to George. He's spot on in that post.

There are indeed two types of people. Nice people and cunts.

I have it on good authority that Boy George is indeed a cunt.

And I trust my friend's judgement.

RedToothBrush · 24/06/2025 21:50

Also I saw a tweet today and I can't for the life of me finding it again.

It said to the effect

The irony klaxon of elites who turn around and say, I'm morally superior to you because I believe in social equality.

SionnachRuadh · 24/06/2025 22:12

SF is very much the male Sandi Toksvig, except I'm not aware of Sandi writing creepy novels. It's the same delivery that allows a moderately clever person to get away with presenting themselves as some kind of galaxy brain, and if they've been doing it for decades, maybe even to convince themselves.

In my cynical old age I sometimes think the best argument for the monarchy is that it stops the Brits making Stephen Fry president.

Bannedontherun · 24/06/2025 22:30

Sandi Tosvik what a fucking arse she is. I was given her book as a gift, could not get past about five pages, all very jolly hockey sticks, as with that woman who was in call the midwifes, and as for Margot moyles book , well same strange analysis of her own early sexual experiences that were violations and abuse as far as i can ascertain.

Bloody awful and annoying lovies is all i can see. Devoid of knowledge or thought of anyone outside their own world.

That is what sets people like JKR, and actually Gervais apart. They remain connected to where they came from.

sadly the arts are full of privileged toffs, as it is so hard for ordinaries to get through. And when they do (ergo Cathy Burke and the like) they start spouting shite just to fit in.

So for me JKR is a fucking hero and she can have a yacht for all i care.

rant over.

But has been asked on other threads by multiple people to return to the thread they started if they wanted us to believe they started this thread in good faith. Strangely they seem not to have noticed any of those posts.

FeistyCat · 24/06/2025 23:56

Firstly, just what "horrendous behaviour" is that, OP? Defending the rights of RAPE SURVIVORS to have female only safe spaces?

Posting misogynistic attacks from well-known misogynist bigots (and crims such as Boy George) proves....what point exactly? Other than you think misogynist bigoted chauvinist pigs are worth listening to?

FeistyCat · 25/06/2025 00:33

JsmeLegie · 23/06/2025 22:06

And, whilst I hope it's unnecessary to clarify the obvious, this thread is neither pro nor anti JKR and has absolutely nothing to do with her creative works.

This thread is intended solely for open discussion about the ongoing controversies raised against her by others - including, but absolutely not limited to, Stephen Fry - and, perhaps more philosophically, about whether a person's good works in one field entitle them to misbehave with impunity in another.

If you are not a coward you will tell us exactly where she has ever "misbehave with impunity in another."

Strange how you cannot give one single example. Cat got your tongue?

FeistyCat · 25/06/2025 00:45

murasaki · 23/06/2025 22:09

I'm not sure the fox botherer has any good works at all.

fox botherer

I hate that term, it makes what he did sound so mild and of no consequence.

He BASHED a fox to death. Far more than 'bothered'.

I prefer fox torturer or fox basher or animal abuser.

I know nearly everyone on MN thinks JK Rowling is wonderful but I don't like her much. Nobody who has worked with her seems to like her either. . Stars of the Harry Potter films, She is always mouthing off her opinions as if hers matter more because she is rich. I disapprove of that attitude.

On the contrary, many, many of stars from the HP movies have defended her. You've only heard the noisy minority. But the majority of them like her and defend her.

Sad that you think a feminist who uses her money for good instead of sitting on a yacht somewhere is 'mouthing off'. If it weren't for feminists 'mouthing off' and refusing to be silenced, @Viviennemary , you wouldn't have the rights you do today.

Yeah off the top of my head Ralph Fiennes, Tom Felton, Helena BC and Jason Isaacs all firmly saw off criticism of her.

TheaBrandt1 · 26/06/2025 13:49

Isnt it extraordinary the attitudes this issue is flushing out? And how even these right on men just cannot bear a woman saying no.

Jkr If you are reading this everyone I have ever met except one troubled teen is in your camp.

Upupandaway10 · 29/06/2025 19:17

Can you elaborate on “horrendous” behaviour or give an example? You are using Boy George as an example of good behaviour? The guy who chained a male escort to a radiator and beat him with a chain? He served a prison sentence for this. Also Jo Maugham the guy who boasted about beating a fox to death in his garden with a baseball bat dressed in his wife’s kimono? Bizarre.

JK Rowling is speaking out on behalf of a lot of women. She has been brave enough to do so and people are thankful.

Well, I did hear that our postman's dentist was told by his uncle's cat, that she was once spotted walking widdershins around a Greggs (I guess the cat wanted a sausage roll). Now if that is not horrendous, what is?

Widdershins, you say?

SidewaysOtter · 01/07/2025 14:22

The13thFairy · 01/07/2025 14:16

Widdershins, you say?

I heard it wasn't even a Dark Moon. The AUDACITY of the woman <hoicks bosom>

And we'll gloss over the accusation that she was seen flying over Ingersoll's barn.
