But the way some people were “crowing” after the Supreme Court decision, as though they were football hooligans celebrating a team win

Gosh, women. Imagine celebrating your success. How can you be so indecorous and boorish?

First you don't just shut up and do what the men want you to.

Second you have the nerve to drink champagne when the law supports your position.

You should all be heartily ashamed of yourselves.

Of course.

The only appropriate reaction to a woman put in the embarrassing position of being publicly acknowledged to be right even though a man publicly made an opposing statement is to minimise, deflect, proffer an embarrassed apology, then move the conversation on to things that are of interest to the man as soon as possible.

‘Let's hope this inspires a new audiobook version of the Potter books to be released with a better voice actor.’

Yes! Who do we think might work?

David Tennant? Just joking

Jodie Comer?

Johnny Depp?

Ralph Fiennes?

Honestly, I'd quite like a nobody actor who just is really good. There is such appalling nepotism among already rich has-beens like Fry.

JKR has been quite good at promoting those without power/ money but with talent in the past. Her name sells so it needn't be a big name and there's a huge number of women and children who'd absolutely love to be able to listen to the HP books without also having to listen to Fry's smug misogynistic tones (just read the Glosswitch article and yes - his female voices are steeped in misogyny - one of those things I won't now be able to ignore).

If it has to be a 'name' I'd like Hugh Fraser as have been enjoying listening to his narration of some Christie classics. He has a lovely voice. He is 79, but if he's willing then I'd quite like him. And this has made me think of David Suchet who is a great character actor and does women's voices better than most male actors - though it's hard for anyone of the male sex to very convincingly portray women's voices in my experience. We don't just see sex, we hear it too.

It'd be nice to have a woman reading them- but I can't think of any female voice actors who I've enjoyed listening to as much as HF when I listen to audiobooks.

@thenoisiesttermagant i know what you mean, I just don’t think it’d work with voice only. Film / TV definitely, we’re all fed up of the same old names and faces, and yep, nepotism.

Jodie Comer is fantastic with accents!

that Fry has an appalling record with regards to children

Including specifically romanticising and admiring men who sought out and raped North African children.

Which seems pretty racist to me.

Has Stephen Fry actually done this? Is there evidence?

If so, why isn’t he in prison?

It's not illegal to fantasise about sex with minors or even write books that promote sex between minors & older gentlemen.

These people of whom you talk..... Isn't it revolting....the complete objectification of another human being.....the complete failure of imagination in relation to the suffering of another human being....just vile

Romanticising and admiring vile people is not a criminal offence. It does show up aspects of ones character.

True true. Admiring paedophiles doesn’t make one a paedophile.. 👀

Perhaps my question should be, why is a man who openly admires paedophiles, on our TV?

I often think it's an attention seeking ego thing " hey, look at me, I'm so cool... I'm a free thinker...i dont have to abide by the petty morality of the great unwashed. Im special. "..

What are these allegations exactly? His books certainly I know about, and are they are terrible books as is his ridiculous play called Latin. Writing horrible things is however permitted. As is saying them.

What is Fry specifically said to have done re paedophiles? Does he defend them or something?

He strikes me as someone troubled really, and rather brittle.

DeanElderberry · 20/06/2025 12:32

@bombastix I gave you the link. Read it.

Does he defend them or something?

I used the words admiring and romanticising because I believe the evidence shows he admires and romanticises them. That is what the words I used mean.

DeanElderberry · 20/06/2025 12:37

To my mind there are only two reasons one could admire and romanticise such men.

One is that one approves their actions.

One is that one is such a shallow and lazy thinker that the humanity and feelings of others (particularly those with extra 'othered' qualities like being poor, being very young, being of a different race, being female) seem neither real nor important, in contrast to the men seeking sexual thrills, who are real, valid and human.

Really? It’s the one where SF writes about his youthful admiration for a bunch of borderline paedophiles. Did I link the wrong one?

DeanElderberry · 20/06/2025 12:54

Sorry- it is the same thread - now. Something else SF related opened up when I first clicked.

bombastix · 20/06/2025 12:58

Thanks. Fry certainly likes to provoke, and his “national treasure” status does seem at odds with this, but I do remember his books and the play he wrote; his romanticizing of this stuff does him no credit, I agree.

His comments about abuse victims I remember too - and those were definitely wrong to make - if he comes out in ten years time and admits that this something that did happen to him at school, I wouldn’t be very surprised. He wrote a Telegraph column a very long time ago about abuse in public schools, where he downplayed that also, like a lot of that generation and before.

How dare you. I've seen every Pepe Le Pew cartoon there is.

Pepe Le Pew is a sex pest. Even child me knew it. That poor cat squirming to get away from him. He's nearly as creepy as Fry. Says too much about the blokes who wrote the stories. I've not seen one in years, have they stopped showing them? #meowtoo.

well he has written all this stuff, that is true. So that is his voice, his words. What he is saying, if you like. Which he is totally allowed to do.

On the other hand, women talking about the material reality of sex are mad, radicalised and generally to be shunned, cancelled and threatened.

bombastix · 20/06/2025 13:10

We’ll agree Fry’s privilege is massive. I mean it takes a millionaire woman to annoy him, whereas ordinary women are just an irrelevance. Particularly ones with a grasp of biology
