NHS Policy Audit - working party -Thread #3

Original thread #1 here:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5291237-nhs-policy-audit-working-party?page=1
Thread #2:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5322494-nhs-policy-audit-working-party-thread-2

This is a thread about “keeping the receipts” on NHS Policies prior to the Supreme Court ruling on 16th April 2025.

Our working theory is that there were no single sex spaces for NHS Staff or Patients in the entire country before that date, having all been removed by stealth.

We are aiming to prove this by auditing websites and policies for all the UK trusts and using the results to raise public awareness.

As well as recording what has happened historically, the information will form a baseline so we can check which Trusts comply or defy the judgement in due course...

We are working around the country region by region. If you fancy getting involved in a bit of grassroots feminism then please do join in to help!?

Each trust takes about an hour to research and you can upload online without giving any personal details away. Comment below and we can give you the link to an online survey - it changes for each region.

Thanks soooo much to all the vipers who have helped so far and @twoloons for doing a great job with the thread wrangling!

Thanks for all your hard work. I've not had much luck the last couple of weeks getting things out to the press - we unearthed most of the big corkers in the London audit. But as we are getting to the end of England I have a reporter who is interested and who mentioned a big story probably with an interactive map. Politicians' names - from the Cabinet - were mentioned who would be interested! So it's all getting a bit serious 😯

It is now nice to have a deadline to work towards so because of holidays it looks like we need to aim to have our England information ready to go by mid August. Behind the scenes TwoLoons has done a fab job of downloading all your data and tabulating it. I have to go through and do the final checks and find all the big themes for that area. So I would expect mid-August is do-able for that. I don't want to say too much on here but thanks to everyone for all your hard work!! It looks like it will be worth it.

If you auditors can press on with Wales & Northern Ireland while all the English data is being worked up, then with a fair wind, we might be ready for follow up stories at the end of the summer?

Please may I ask a general question? My trust still has its non-compliant "Gender Identity" etc etc policies on its intranet
(as well as still putting out regular messages about how much they support LGBTQ+ people who are sad after supreme court ruling - nothing about supporting women of course)

Who would be the right person to get in touch with to enquire about their plans for the policy? Would it be HR? Communications? Directors? DEI (lol)?.

Thank you so much for all you're still doing.

It's unlikely that they're talking to each other so you could take a scattergun approach and ask them all. There'll be people who have asked these questions before so you will add to a pile that they shouldn't be able to ignore. Guess they're waiting for the guidance on how to have single-sex spaces that are single-sex because it's so confusing.

"If you auditors can press on with Wales & Northern Ireland while all the English data is being worked up, then with a fair wind, we might be ready for follow up stories at the end of the summer?"

This should be doable, the NW has taken a while but its a big beast of a region. Wales and NI are smaller and have freshly minted FOIs from our friend Ermine I believe.

FarriersGirl · 23/07/2025 09:20

Next up for the vipers is Wales🐉

The structure is more similar to Scotland being mainly health boards that deliver both acute, and mental health and community services. There is one specialist trust and an ambulance service. Don't forget that you will need a new jot form link that will be DM on allocation of your first trust.

NHS Wales

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board
Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board
Hywel Dda University Health Board
Powys Teaching Health Board
Swansea Bay University Health Board
Velindre University NHS Trust
Welsh Ambulances Services NHS Trust

Mipe · 23/07/2025 11:52

Peregrina · 23/07/2025 16:31

Remember that w is a vowel in Welsh - so coom, as in book.

@FarriersGirl I have submitted Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (both Stonewall members) so I am ready for a few more 😀

YellowRoom · 24/07/2025 20:07

I've submitted Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

Refusing to use a name, pronouns or gender... is a form of harassment
and discrimination.

Many trans people wish to maintain control over who sees them unclothed. Therefore, when people are observed without first asking their permission, it can feel like an invasion of privacy and creates a barrier to respectful health care.

We are committed to serving and respecting all of our members and maternity service users, most of whom are women

From staff policy EQuIA

Do you think that the policy impacts on men and woman in different ways? Significantly more men than women transition and significantly more male to female trans* people experience abuse than female to male. There may be a greater need for support accordingly as the whole experience could be more challenging.

TwoLoonsAndASprout · 24/07/2025 20:14

@YellowRoom, but of course everyone else just loves it when they are observed unclothed without permission.

All those genital inspections they're subjected to?

I've not done an ambulance trust before. Is it pretty much the same investigative procedure as for the hospital/mental health trusts?

Same process the main difference is there won't be anything about patient accommodation as such so its mainly staff policies and links to Stonewall etc.
