I've not heard of Sarah Owen before but she made an absolute fool of herself in that clip. Aggressively correcting others when you've got the facts wrong yourself is never impressive.

She was in the public eye last year when she spoke about miscarriage and baby loss........but she's always had this demanour on the 'trans' issue. She's out of her depth and has the most unpleasant demanour and tone. Someone needs to put her right...and very firmly!

So the chair of the committee didn’t know the SCJ included “sports and toilets”??

I hope she absolutely throughly ashamed of her ignorance. She ought to resign immediately.

And yet it seems she isn’t. Anyone who has read the judgement knows it covers sport and toilets. And the bare minimum required for chairing a committee session about the judgement is, surely, to have read the judgement. Most conscientious people would also talk to lawyers and read some of the legal commentary on the subject.

If I was caught out, publicly, in not having done the bare minimum, ie reading the judgement, and as a result demonstrated that I had completely misunderstood the subject I was asking questions about, I would be mortified. I would be so embarrassed I would probably resign from public life.

And yet this silly, ignorant woman doesn’t even seem to understand, let alone care, how foolish she has made herself look.

I’ve yet to watch the whole clip but the one posted earlier with the incorrect correction is enough. Total incompetence writ large. This person clearly isn’t fit for this post if they aren’t made to make an apology and correction when the accurate reporting and legal understanding affects so many women & girls.

Where do we write to express our concerns and ask for a chair who is willing and able to read the SC Judgment?

ETA maybe she read the same 30 page document as the Amnesty CEO that seems to result in the brain death of anyone who sees it?

NecessaryScene · 12/06/2025 08:24

This his how "trans" breaks everything.

There's no longer any hard rule against lying or just speaking total nonsense.

You just cannot enforce such a rule in a world where people are expected to call men women, or where "self ID" and "my truth" are held to be meaningful concepts.

To be able to call people out for inaccuracy requires a common acknowledgment of objective truth, but we don't have that any more.

Faint hope 😏

I wondered exactly that too. Is there some TRA summary they are reading?

Pyjamatimenow · 12/06/2025 10:15

@KnottyAuty I want to know who we can write to about her as well. Appalling woman

When you know you are on the right side of history there is no need to research topics or speak the truth

This - all day long.

Once people have to enforce / speak or live a lie, it impacts on every aspect of their credibility.

It's no wonder there's such contempt for politicians when they behave as Owens did. Unprepared, displaying her ignorance while full of contempt for others who both know and understand the law. Trouble is, she'll be so full of herself and egged on by those determined to centre men that she'll never manage any insight into her own limitations.

Depressing

Yes she’s already been tweeting about how she’s going to hold the EHRC to account for “trans people”. Lapped up by the misogynists on Reddit of course.

SlackJawedDisbeliefXY · 12/06/2025 10:27

I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for what Women's Hour has to say on this meeting ...

soupycustard · 12/06/2025 10:34

The other problem with this total ignorance and incompetence from a woman is that not only do she and the female 'allies' uphold males and their wish to take away female sex-based rights, they also give the misogynists on 'the Right' an example of a women being incompetent, from which they then extrapolate that all women are.
I say this not because I think this argument in any way fair or intellectually valid, but because in a Trumpian world, we really dont need 'progressive' misogynists helping the 'right wing' misogynists by providing examples of idiocy.

RoyalCorgi · 12/06/2025 10:34

A question I frequently ask myself is: why don't stupid people know they're stupid? How can you sit there, questioning an expert, and demonstrating plainly that you don't know what you're talking about, and not realise that you've made a fool of yourself? How?

I agree, and a lot of MRA type men blame feminists for the success of the trans movement, and it’s sometimes hard to argue against that when it’s self identifying feminist lite women like this pushing it.

In this post-factual era, being 'an expert' means being an Enemy of the People.
The more you can talk down an expert, the more of a populist hero you are.
The more you can proudly reject scientific facts about MMR, or Covid, or 5G, or other topics, the more heroic you seem online, and unfortunately increasingly in the real world too.
'I really showed that so-called expert, didn't I? All this 'science shows' and 'studies prove' and 'factually correct' nonsense - we're not sheep, we all know what's really going on..'

NecessaryScene nailed it with 'trans breaks everything' - a wonderful phrase which I'm going to re-use lots, thank you!

There have been lots of attacks on facts and objectivity - Covid provided great opportunity to deny science, but the trans movement has been the most effective assault on objective fact in recent years.
Frighteningly effective, because if you can make so many influential areas of society - education, medicine, the law - abandon facts for demonstrably inaccurate claims, you've demonstrated how fragile the system is.

moto748e · 12/06/2025 12:07

Is there any point to this committee, as currenty constituted? Does anyone else actually ask anything other than Rosie Duffield and Rebecca Paul?

Where can we find the constitution/articles etc because I was thinking exactly the same. If it is chaired by someone who is unable to understand that her remit is Women & Girls with their subgroups of lesbians and trans men, maybe it should be disbanded? It's pointless if they are focussed on male interests isn't it?

SionnachRuadh · 12/06/2025 12:45

We still have to look forward to their hearing with Mary-Ann Stephenson, where I have no doubt they'll be trying to discover if she weighs as much as a duck.

Datun · 12/06/2025 12:54

Why is it called the women and equalities committee, when it should be called the 'women have no equality committee'?

Why do successive governments put sexist women in charge of it? This is as bad as Maria Miller claiming that the only women who object to self ID are those 'purporting to be feminists'.

Let's take a minute to enjoy how that bloody comment has aged, shall we.

And yes, why does that awful chair woman think that transactivists are pouring piss over themselves and government offices, threatening women, and telling everyone they should be punched, just because they can't join all-women public boards??

it's just idiocy from absolutely every angle.

I liked Baroness Faulkner pointing out that it's only 8400 trans people who are really affected though.

They're all very silent, aren't they, about the fact that we all know this isn't a ruling that has put a stop to certificated men, it's put a stop to all the hordes of men pretending that self ID is completely legal.

I like Baroness Faulkner more every time I see her speak. She's obviously restraining herself in an effort to be professional and neutral. But the tears speak for themselves.

Likewise Rosie Duffield. Absolute bloody warrior. And tells me all I need to know about Keir Starmer's dislike of her.

Infuriating and frustrating though that session was, in my opinion it might as well be extra-strong spine strengthener in a can.

moto748e · 12/06/2025 12:59

Couldn't agree more about the Baroness and Rosie. I don't think Sarah Owen is sexy, though! 😄

SlackJawedDisbeliefXY · 12/06/2025 13:08

Perhaps

Truth adjacent, no reading required, trans talking point civil servant whipping shop, in the hope of getting a reaction from one of the only sane people in the room committee

Covers it?

Edited - apologies to Rosie at al

Watched the clips last night afterwards I could not sleep.

Apart from the shocking lack of understanding and the desire to prioritise trans rights over women’s basic human rights what shocked me and upset me is her interrupting when the Baroness had become emotional.

I accept that these committees are supposed to be challenging, but my goodness rude and insensitive? Is that what we as taxpayers payers are funding?

The baroness handled if beautifully I can only imagine her internal thoughts!

DifferentChoicesTooLate · 12/06/2025 13:13

Also Rosie and the other women who challenged- hats of to them, so professional and level headed. Wish I had an ounce of their skill!

Unijourney · 12/06/2025 19:05

Very true especially if you constrast how the awful Sarah Owens is clearly in favour with Labour HQ. I used to be a supporter but the trans issue has really highlighted how poor the leadership team is. Their utterances supporting TIM has highlighted how stupid and unprincipled they must be.
