The purity spiral tightens on the transgenderUK reddit

It seems someone (trans) working inside the Labour Party, in a group called "Pride in Labour" posted something in the transgenderUK reddit and got piled on by other posters to such a level that a moderator had to delete a whole load of posts. Now that moderator - the one who won't brook any dissent to the echobox - is being attacked in his/her/their own reddit. Shades of Robespierre being dragged to the guillotine.

Here's that moderator's own post, quoting some of the stuff that he/she/they had to remove:

Hi, yes - I did lock and/or remove some of these threads, primarily because it had resulted in a full day of bizarre harassment across multiple threads and subreddits and multiple social media sites targeting the OP from people here, in which the way people described their actions went from a single questionably judged statement to something bizarrely disproportionate.

For context, Pride in Labour is a small group of volunteers in the Labour Party whose stated purpose as a group is to fight against the anti-trans consensus/to push for the existence of a meaningfully inclusive LGBT+ group within the party that isn't run by fucking monsters (the actual utility/viability of a group like it is very much arguable under these circumstances, but it's what they're trying to do, in theory). People were, instead, treating the OP as though he were some kind of personal embodiment of the entire party, and therefore an acceptable target to take out their frustrations on.

The OP in question pulled his initial thread following the backlash, and expressed significant distress to me (and a desire to disengage from the subreddit) - and the harassment/abuse simply just kept coming. This seems to be another iteration of that.

I had to pull so many comments from those threads under Rule 5, primarily because people couldn't behave. We'd act the same way regarding awful treatment of essentially anybody using this place - and frequently do, usually at their request.

A few examples from amidst the flood, taken from here - there's been a great deal more elsewhere:

Pride in Labour is a joke and failure. [username] is just too blind and egotistical to see that the people he’s supposed to be “supporting” hate him for being a traitorous liar unable to do anything meaningful

Maybe [name] means well, but he's a harmful idiot with an ego the size of a freight train.

Seems I was wrong. They are full on fucking Quislings. [name] has far too large an ego to be leading an organisation that has achieved absolutely fuck all and has done not but continue to harm LGBT relations by continually siding with the people removing their rights.

[name] "means well", if his definition of "well" is the eradication of trans women from society.

How actually fugging dare they. How dare they betray our community, turn against trans and Intersex people and spend YEARS joining up with the opposition mocking and deriving us then to have the gal to think its appropriate to start discussing such a sensitive topic.

stop palling with the people banning us from rape crisis centres then, you fucking traitor

Go fuck yourself labour shill

The character of the stuff I had to pull was, pretty universally, just incredibly disproportionate personal abuse/harassment. It's just a multiple day long dogpile by people who really should know better - given that, of course I've tried to cut it off.

The worst of it took place off-site - the way some of you have been acting elsewhere is genuinely disgusting. At present, people (some of whom I recognise as regulars on this subreddit) are taking screenshots of his face and reposting them at him as way of mocking his appearance, calling him a nazi, a "capo" [sic], describing him as "sounding like a rapist", a "pathetic little creep", and repeatedly posting fecal-themed variations on his name. This isn't in any meaningful sense about "civility politics" or however the fuck you want to frame it - it's just straight-up, unambiguous bullying.

Reddit is a strange place full of maladjusted weirdos so none of this is particularly surprising.

The other day, I found a subreddit dedicated to hating JKR - EnoughJKR or something. It was like entering a parallel universe... full of maladjusted weirdos!

Quite. Lots of pick me women on there as well.

That Azaelia Banks woman he quotes asks if Gen Z reads Harry Potter.

I can assure her that Gen Z lived and breathed HP (and some still do). And that Gen Alpha (as they are apparently called) are now glued to HP in their turn. Go into any primary school and look at what Ys 4-6 are choosing to read.

Meanwhile, watching the Cultural Revolution play out on Reddit will keep us entertained. Let a thousand flowers bloom, and all that.

I know, time to get the bulk popcorn order in.
