Are toilets still allowed to be cleaned by members of the opposite sex?

PoisedRubyLion · 27/05/2025 15:50

I see signs saying toilets may be cleaned by members of the opposite sex in a lot of places. Is this allowed after the supreme court ruling? If a male cleaner was in there it would be a mixed sex space.

Also women with PCOS.

Don't forget masculine looking straight women, masculine looking gay women, flat chested women, transmen who were pretty much ignored up to now

I'm sure I'll remember some more

Another bingo card is required

So what?

Well surely, if the argument is that trans people who use female toilets are in there hoping to abuse women, trans cleaners should also be banned from being able to enter, as they would also have the same agenda. In fact, they may have even got the cleaning job as an opportunity to spend even more time in toilets. Watch out.

What if it’s a trans cleaner?

Oh that question is, like, sooooo Page 10!

Is there a rota of you, and as soon as the thread starts to lapse into sense, which it already did on Page 1, there's an alert on your phone that says 'Your turn to say something silly on the toilet-cleaning thread - anything will do, even something that has been answered several times already - just get in there and flood the zone with what ifs' Grin
Apologies if you were being sarcastic, deadpantrashcan, and your post was a parody - it's so hard to tell!

The sign stating 'male cleaner' will have the required result. What would be the difference?

Is this the latest whataboutary now? We’ve had what about Black women, what about 8 year old boys, and now, what about male cleaners.

Yeah, generally, the way it goes is - media gets public to hate on and attack all minorities. Once we’ve covered one, we go for the next. America is a little more advanced than us with this, but we’re not far behind in this strange little nation.

Coatsoff42 · 28/05/2025 17:13

I think you should wait for a really terrible non-gotcha, the children in toilets one is my favourite, and unanimously pretend like everyone is all stumped. Then perhaps they can go off and run it as a good argument and see how it goes down.

On that note, the topless protests are stunning and brave and I’ve never been more moved. Just a few more and I’ll give in and agree to all the demands.

Oh! Would that apply? Even if they’re a trans woman? Would they not have to make ‘trans cleaner’ signs? I dunno, I’d just find myself a bit confused if I waltzed in to the terror zone, sorry, toilets, to see someone cleaning who could be more feminine looking than me. Particularly if I were to expect some kind of balding janitoresque male. But then again, I guess I wouldn’t have time to even have those concerns as I shouldn’t even be going in there with a sign like that up there. For my protection. I’d only be asking for assault if I did.

Are male cleaners a recognised minority group? 🤔 Asking for a friend...

Yes. All that is needed is a sign saying 'male cleaner'.

PP have explained why you are wrong.

But let's assume you're not wrong. Everyone realises that men should not be cleaning women's toilets and vice versa. That stops straight away. There are far more female cleaners than male cleaners, so result: women's toilets experience very little change, but men's toilets are even more disgusting than usual.
Are you cool with that?

I thought this, but it has crossed my mind recently, the amount of public toilets being cleaned (especially in service stations) are by men. When 10-15 yrs ago it was a rare site.

Wanted to comment purely to comment but couldn't think of a single comment that would get through to the OP.

Actually, the men of any age and woman of any age.

"Oh what a beautiful baby, it's in neutral colours so do you mind me asking what it is...."

"Not at all, he's a man, just 3 months old called Toby" yeah ludicrous.

Your response to werewolftherewolf reads as if you think male cleaners (which they mentioned, not you) are a minority group.

My apologies for misunderstanding, you were making so much sense otherwise...

Oh ok. So we’ve just disregarded that trans people even exist now? Like, we’re just going to delete the word from the dictionary, too? So, in order to adhere to this signage rule, will they have to disclose that they’re trans to the cleaning company and then put up the “male cleaner” sign on the door? If they don’t, what would happen? Fire them? Burn them?

I was just saying that the general trend for society is to rage on minority groups. We cycle through them. Currently, in addition to trans hatred, we’re obsessed with illegal immigrants. Hope that answers your two questions, apologies that I didn’t get to the first one fast enough before you asked a second time.

Why do you think that women having boundaries and their own spaces is 'trans hate'?

Are you one of those trans supporters that doesn't think women should have any rights of their own?

And what's any of that got to do with immigrants? Regardless of their legality? Did anyone even mention immigrants on this thread before you did?

It's 'flood the zone' in action, Keating - if you can't think of a something groundless thing to say about women's toilets, throw in something about illegal immigrants, that might pad out the thread for another bit🙄

I am sure trans people exist but you seem to think that they are all totally against abiding by the law. Why do you think that trans people are all potential law flouting criminals, can you not conceive of decent law abiding trans persons?

Sounds about right. Lots of wittering on about 'hate' and hopefully those pesky women will STFU, right?

Trans women and men who aren't trans are equally likely to have tried to get a job with access to women's loos in order to abuse women (see the examples upthread of the two male cleaners who placed cameras in women's space). In general we rely on the extra protections of the process of employment and the ties that employment brings to mitigate the risk. You are right that risk for women is still increased when men, whether trans identified or not, clean women's public toilets, but since it is logistically difficult to have same sex staff in many cases and such a requirement would probably lead to fewer toilets, it's not something that women have campaigned on. Most companies use a "Male Cleaners" sign to warn women so they can check.

There would be no particular point in insisting on a "Trans Cleaners" sign if the cleaner happened to be a trans, because women aren't concerned about trans people being in their toilets, they're concerned about men. A male cleaners sign conveys the risk clearly and is applicable regardless of a man's gender identity.

If they haven't disclosed their transgender status to be a cleaner in some places, how would they be DBS checked appropriately?

However, aren't we told that no person with a transgender identity denies their sex? Are you saying that they would? That they would deny their sex when they would need to alert their employers that as a male person they were entering into female single sex spaces?

That is a concerning accusation you are making there.
