Mothers milk no longer exists ?

I've never posted in this topic before but think this is the right place. I was getting some breastmilk out of the freezer this morning and noticed that the storage bags I bought only 1 year ago have Mothers Milk written on, fyi the storage bags are that old the milk inside is not. However I just recently purchased the same storage bags, using the same company, same bags, and this has been removed? Is it just a new design? Or is it for all of the chest feeding "mothers/fathers?" out in the world? At this point I'm just happy it still has breastmilk written on, although assuming that will be changed to chest milk in the near future sigh. Am I being unreasonable to let this annoy me? I know its not the AIBU topic. It could very well be a coincidental design change, although I highly doubt that.

Aww. Mothers milk has such warmer undertones to it. We're definitely losing something. 😟

Ontothenextac · 20/05/2025 14:32

I suppose the inference is this is the milk a mother gives their baby

whereas formula is the poison that the devil incarnate gives their baby

hence the change

@OntothenextacI don't think this has anything to do with formula 🤷🏻‍♀️ . Fed is best formula is amazing. But Mothers Milk is an accurate description of what's in the bag, there was no reason to lose it.

We can’t know. I guess you could write and ask?

Ontothenextac · 20/05/2025 14:45

It’s a bit 1950ish labelling tbh

i know you’re looking for a dark side, and perhaps that is the case, but I suspect just them modernising the labelling

InterruptingRabbit · 20/05/2025 14:52

But does anyone ever call it mother’s milk? I’ve never heard anyone call it that. I bf both my DDs and had frozen milk in the freezer and would never have said “just need to defrost some mother’s milk”.

Isnt it more likely that they’ve just changed it to the words people actually use?

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 20/05/2025 14:56

It may be the milk of a mother but it's not always the milk of that baby's mother. In some circumstances it could be quite upsetting for the milk donor to be putting milk into a bag for another child and harder still if the bag has "Mother's Milk" on it.

I've just looked at the Lansinoh website and it has "mother" and "mum" all over it so I think it's just a re-brand rather than anything more controversial.

Indeed

i I think my husband would have collapsed in laughter if I had asked him to get out the “mother’s milk” from the fridge. And I would have joined him!!

Ontothenextac · 20/05/2025 14:58

Sorry to disappoint OP

But this doesn’t look like one to get yourself in a het up twist about

dontcomeatme · 20/05/2025 15:04

@CremeEggsForBreakfastvery true, my SIL used donated breastmilk and never thought about the implications of mother being written on her bag.

@InterruptingRabbit I have never called it that either! Think I just got used to seeing it in my freezer haha

Did you ever actually talk to your SIL re how she felt? Or fact she didn’t mention you’ve taken it to mean she had no issue?

Ontothenextac · 20/05/2025 15:13

is your partner a woman? Does she also breastfeed?

Ontothenextac · 20/05/2025 15:13

They’re updating their slogan from something decidedly 1950s in tone

I suspect nothing more nothing less

Apollo441 · 20/05/2025 15:21

They didn't go with Chest Milk so not really an issue.

Yes we spoke about it often as I was trying to help her with her own supply having previously breastfed myself. She was just extremely grateful for the donated milk, very thankful and thought it was amazing it was an option. Baby was born at only 25 weeks and her supply just did not come in.

So the fact that labelled mother’s milk was brought up by one of you? In what context?

Rtato · 20/05/2025 15:26

I’ve only ever called it breastmilk. I’m sure that’s what my grandmother called it too. I’ve never heard of people calling it ‘mother’s milk’, that phrase gives me the ick!!

No it was never brought up, in the OP I state I've only just bought the new bags. But she didn't hold any resentment towards not being able to feed, her baby was born too early and she was just soo happy that her baby was alive and someone out their was kind enough to donate their milk. It was a none issue.

So you have no idea how she felt about the mother’s milk label

likely didn’t even bloody notice! But she may have been a bit…. I don’t know, bothered about it.

Ontothenextac · 20/05/2025 15:29

Hang on… is this the SIL who is disgusted by you breastfeeding and thinks you do it for attention??!!

I think you're trying to make this more of an issue than it was regarding my SIL. I've said multiple times she was just overjoyed at being able to access donated milk. Although we never specifically discussed the label, being honest she received the milk in different bags so it may have not even had the label. We talked about the donating mother, the technology we have now, the ability to share, we talked about wet nurses, everything breastmilk related I can think of and she was not the type to be bothered by that label. Her daughter was alive and well fed and I've never seen a woman happier about that. She was completely rational about her supply not coming in and didn't suffer mam guilt or anything.
