Personally I think it's extremely offensive to try to pressure homosexual women and men to keep their homosexuality secret.

If a lesbian can't say that she's exclusively attracted to adult human females, that is a seriously fucked up situation.

PetaltotheMedal · 19/05/2025 10:57

The bending over backwards not to offend some shows exactly where the potential danger comes from.

narniabusiness · 19/05/2025 10:42

This really made me upset. By ‘some people’ they must mean trans rights activists, and I fell that the presenter was only saying that because they were scared of getting complaints from them.
Some people may disagree with the views expressed but ‘offensive’ sets the bar rather higher.

I know… I found it upsetting too and I think there comes a point where the BBC need to stop saying it. If they want to exhibit ‘balance’ on this (not that they’ve done that to date) a one-off mention of ‘some may disagree ‘ is fine (provided they are saying this to their tra interviewees too). The repeated use of ‘offensive’ to a lesbian woman who is talking about her attraction to other women is not.

I totally agree @hholiday and others who've said similar. I don't think the BBC realise they are essentially being homophobic when they do this.

I also find the entire premise of a man saying he's a women deeply offensive. Women and girls face unique challenges, discrimination and outright oppression across the world right now and throughout history.

They want to play act something they have no understanding of and we have no choice about. We exist, we're not a fucking concept or a feeling or a nebulous cluster of stereotypes. I understand that I don't have a right to not be offended and that people are allowed to have their own beliefs and we can agree to disagree, but damn right it's grossly offensive.

If you want to know who has the power, look at whom you're not allowed to say 'no' to. To paraphrase.

Just for your information, take a little care in referring to that quote:

Sausagenbacon · 19/05/2025 11:07

FWIW, while Nuala really annoyed me, my dh thought she was good - asking the questions, but allowing space for the answers.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/05/2025 11:08

Exactly, I also find it offensive that people think men can be women based on sexist stereotypes and other misogynistic views, and even more so the idea that these people’s offence at not being pandered to in all things is paramount, whereas my offence as a woman doesn’t even warrant thinking about.

This. It was a repeated use and in stark contrast to the acceptance that some men can demand access to women and teenage girls undressing yet there's no trigger warning that most people will find that offensive.

nauticant · 19/05/2025 11:07

Interesting, but I feel the premise of the quote is correct, even if an arsehole said it first

DrBlackbird · 19/05/2025 11:12

WarriorN · 19/05/2025 10:32

100% agree.

I also felt she was warmer and more natural with Kate and Helen than RMW.

Maybe (be nice to think so) Nuala has started to appreciate the sex realist position but she’s definitely been of the bekind voice in past WH episodes.

SidewaysOtter · 19/05/2025 11:12

I'd forgotten about this! Now waiting for it to be on Sounds <drums fingers>

I don't mind the questions about "Some people would say [insert viewpoint] is offensive" as long as they're done in good faith and not a stick to beat the interviewee with - they allow for the perceived slights to be addressed.

Ellie1015 · 19/05/2025 11:13

Kate was excellent. Really clear.

SternJoyousBee · 19/05/2025 11:13

Thanks for the thread @Greyskybluesky

i forgot all about WH this morning so will catch up with the interview on Sounds later.

mumda · 19/05/2025 11:13

Balance is interesting as a concept.
Woman's hour should probably think about their role in this nonsense.

nauticant · 19/05/2025 11:13

That's how I read it SidewaysOtter but I appreciate others will perceive it differently.

WarriorN · 19/05/2025 11:14

Who ever is on next for the correct analysis of the SR could do well to day its damn offensive for a male to even think they could ever be female

You can go to listen live on webpage then rewind to the relevant section. It was the second topic.

I think that only works while the programme is being broadcast and it's not possible when the schedule has moved onto the following programmes.

“You’re arguing that a biological male can never be a lesbian”

😂😂😂

'arguing'... as though it isn't a universally well-known fact.

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 19/05/2025 11:18

MyPresumablyScrotum · 19/05/2025 10:32

And onto women's sport.

The cognitive dissonance Nuala must get from going from a piece about a male coach abusing female swimmers; to defending male rights to lesbian spaces; to discussing women's sports .... don't know how she does it!

I'm just hear to say that I love your username 😆

Sorry to distract from this really important thread. I'm so glad that LGBA have been given a voice in this. I'll catch up with it on iPlayer later.

Yes. I thought Nuala did an ok job under the circumstances, not sure I consider the overall tone “balanced” though.
