So says a statement from its female boss (my boss).
“This feels like a huge step back, and I want to reassure all our colleagues impacted by the ruling, that you have our support, that you have my personal support, and that we’re doing everything we can to explore how we can do right by our colleagues, stay true to our values…

“Our policies have not changed…. colleagues can continue to use toilets and changing facilities in accordance with their gender…”

Add co-op to list of companies to avoid.

Skyellaskerry · 02/05/2025 20:17

Are they Stonewalled?

How can so called reputable companies blatantly disregard clarification of this law. Fucksake.

Skyellaskerry · 02/05/2025 20:18

CriticalCondition · 02/05/2025 20:16

I see from another thread that the Co-op was and maybe still is signed up to Stonewall. Someone should point out Stonewall's disclaimer regarding legal advice which is plastered all over their website.

Cross post! I was wondering about this too.

MsPoppoff · 02/05/2025 20:19

timing is interesting. I suspect they are trying to bury it under the news coverage of the hacking.

I see that, twenty years after I left, they still shit on their staff.

Why are people coming out with statements that are now clearly illegal?
They are going to look right idiots when they have to publish a retraction or get slapped with a lawsuit.

Yes, all employers have to provide single sex toilet facilities for their staff.

ThatCyanCat · 02/05/2025 20:22

Also, no disrespect to you, but tell your boss that the hummus is shite.

AnSolas · 02/05/2025 20:23

Please tell me a person/people in charge of a business selling financial products which is regulated did not say that the business is planning on breaking the law because the business leader disagrees with the highest court in the land gave a ruling on a law which the business is obliged to follow?

Like who is that stupid?

Illegal acts as part of corporate governance is not an option....

The bank, most likely!

I'll put this here for the journalists.

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2025 20:33

'Facilities

We know that for people who identify as trans or non-binary, it’s often difficult to feel safe using gendered toilets. To help, we’ll always try to use symbols rather than words to identify our toilets and have gender neutral facilities wherever this is possible.
If the toilets where you work are gender specific, you should use the ones you feel safest in. We’ll never expect you or ask you to use the disabled toilets instead, but of course if you feel most comfortable using them, then that’s fine.'

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2025 20:36

From the Bullying policy:

'Examples of harassment at work could include:
...
'Repeatedly using the wrong pronouns or name for someone who is trans or non-binary, despite having the correct information'

So people who have no physical need for the transfer equipment etc. get to Q with staff who need them.

So words not a willingness to invest in the extra third fourth space

Yes, they’re Stonewall Champions, according to their website and Sex Matters’ list.

So hopefully they will change their tune now that Sex Matters have written to Stonewall to tell them they’re idiots (see either of the MN Stonewall threads for more info and articles).

Keeping track of Stonewall - Sex Matters

We keep track of Stonewall's activities when they influence language, law and policy, and try to keep an up-to-date list of Stonewall Champions.

When I worked in funeralcare a few years ago at the Co-op I remember finding the policy for staff 'transitioning' (including paid time off for all sorts) was incredible and all written in a tone to appease the sacred caste of cock.

I was allowed much less time off for gynae related surgery, associated appointments and recovery and a lot was unpaid

I missed a trick there, I should have claimed it was gender shit then at least I could've paid my bills whilst lying at home in agony

I did read that section and wonder how it compared to the way they treat other employees needing surgery and medical treatment.

Twits. Do they not understand that it the SC ruling is not simply an opinion, it is law, and that following the law is not optional?

I honestly don't think many people do.

They're followers of an ideology where feelings create facts, you can have your own personal little reality, and where you can lament that women's rights exist while still believing you're not a regressive and misogynist muppet.

It's going to take hard consequences to snap people back to reality, it was all allowed to blunder on for so long. I seriously do think from the way many are talking, it's as if they think they're going to get a vote at some point, and the SC judgment was just the opening act of some kind of process they have a say in and can control. And if they don't like it they don't have to do it anyway.

Its a bit like those police programmes where they arrest some teenager who says 'but I don't want to be arrested' and expects this to make it all go away.

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2025 21:28

'If you decide to undergo medical procedures or interventions related to your gender identity, then we’ll support you through this. We’ll give you a reasonable amount of paid time off work for appointments to do with the transition process – so talk to your manager and agree the time you need. We’ll treat this separately to time off for sickness absence. There’s more information in the Dental and Medical Appointments Policy.
We’ll also support you when you return to work after surgery, which could include a phased return to work. Talk to your manager about your needs.'

I wish I'd printed/saved the intranet policies re this

My colleagues and managers were a bit clueless about GI and just saw the fun part of getting paid to dress up and go to Pride on work time.

I did witness so much misogyny, homophobia and casual racism at the Co-op though. Old timers (men) who made horrendous comments about muslim women (I reported and nothing was done) and a culture of 'back of house banter'

The Co-op seemed to do a lot of talking the talk regarding systemic equality but, on a ground level, so much intolerant cultural behaviour.

When I had gynae surgery I had to divulge lots of personal information yet, according to their policy on transitioning colleagues, someone who wants to cosplay the opposite sex is treated with kid gloves and cannot be questioned about their time off work

Yep

I remember sitting on an inflatable cushion, wearing incontinence pads due to heavy post surgical bleeding and reading that at work because I had to return

@countrysidedeficit message to all colleagues today.

Does this refer to your staff toilet provision? I am very surprised that some organisations are leaving themselves open to legal proceedings in this way.

Fuck, that makes me so angry. I’m so sorry you were shafted like that. This really is all about male privilege.

That's a discrimination tribunal right there I think. Understand if you don't want to go that route, but it is.
